Hauppauge with WinTV 10

Is there a way to lower the bitrate for the Hauppauge tuner?

Hi, bitrate of what exactly? Live TV? A previously recorded file?

Do you mean transcode on the fly?  The tuner itself basically just passes on the bits sent by the broadcaster.

Exactly. When you're watching, you can use the controls in the video player to lower the bitrate via server transcoding.

I was hoping to lower it at the source. Maybe a setting in WinTV? The documentation is not very good for WinTV.

Settings in WinTV has a quality level only for analog, so I presume it wouldn't affect digital channels, but you could try.

The source  BDA drivers don't transcode.  Not sure if TVNext will cache to disk or transcode in memory before it hits Emby but from the specs https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vTtWQwRLBTPp5TNh8KmtSH3Rvz9Zm6ovUL__YL9Ax1ikzGLCzdfhryjMJ6-g5N1rJIf5LrDGjE5jqds/pubhtml?gid=1930489182&single=true only the HDHR extend in the US supports transcoding.

I don't see anything on this page supporting Hauppauge tuners. Am I missing something?

The promised future update to Live TV in Emby is TVNext and it supports BDA not specific tuners but I was pointing out the future spec didn't say anything about transcoding directly from the tuner which is what I thought you were asking for.  Digital tuners are not like old analog tuners where you could set the bitrate etc they capture streams directly from the tuner or more accurately from the broadcast source: antenna, satellite or cable. 

Bottom line is probably just to buy a bigger drive and not worry about reducing quality.
