No playable items were found. Are you trying to play an empty folder?

I am new to Emby, installed on Ubuntu 22.whatever, updates etc.

I am using both the windows client and web client to test, no proxy or anything direct same network.

My TV shows and Movie libraries are great, my Anime library is a broken mess.

Most of the shows do not have images:

and they will not play (I get the message "No playable items were found. Are you trying to play an empty folder?"). this happens if I try to play season, shuffle, or play a specific episode:

Also, episodes do not show in the folder associated with them:

...expect, for one show: Nichijou, which works almost flawlessly aside from a weird ep 1 title:

What I've tried: updates, using web player vs windows app. downloading every plugin I could find that has the word Anime in it. Making sure to enable every option that has the word Anime in it on the Library settings (they all seem to come from the plugins).

Hi there, how are your files named and organized?

How many Emby libraries have you created, and what folder paths are added to each one?

my folder organization: However Sonar organizes them, here are some examples:

looks like at somepoint either sonar updated settings or I changed them to reformat the folder names. here's an example folder content:

and in S1

weird enough, the episodes WILL show up in search, but will not play:

for comparison, here's the one that works: Nichijou

I saw this and thought the problem was nested season folders, but here's another show that is formatted the same as Nichijou but also doesn't work:

same ability to search for episodes direct but not play. I confirmed the emby server can read the files at least:

Oh, forgot the second part of the question:

I have three: movies, tv shows, anime:

theyre both accessed via the same ntfs share.

Unless you have a specific reason to want to use those sources, I would suggest that was a bad idea.  TVDB is a good and reliable (as far as any crowd-sourced db can be, I guess) source for anime.

Problems like yours are usually down to folder structure and file naming, or something to do with the contents of the nfo files.

Alternatively, given the prevalence of subs (typically ssa/ass) in anime, you may have some settings related to that which are blocking playback - do subs work ok in your other libraries?

Hmm, okay update. Nichijou working may have been a sign that something was happening slowly. I got up this morning and found a decent amount of titles (maybe a third?) were looking fine in the library and working.

...well technically I woke up and found out my VM had ran out of space and everything crashed, but after expanding the disk and partitions...

Anyway, I did enable the tvdb and put it at the top of the list and am reloading metadata, I'll leave it to see how it goes. looks like whatever is happening is a not very multi threaded process and my server is old as dirt so per core perf is not great, maybe it'll just take time:
