Managing and simplifying multiple user access

Hi,

I've been happily using Emby for some time now, and want to now migrate my family across from Plex.  I fully appreciate trying to replicate someone else's workflow is not necessarily the best option, so please feel free to correct my 'wrong think' and point me in the right direction :)

The situation is a few shared Android devices (Android TVs / Shields), and then a few other personal devices (phones / tablets).  Some are at my house, some at family members'.

I currently use Plex Home, which allows me to create the users.  I simply log into the device once, and then all of the accounts can be accessed.  Each adult user has their own pin, each child doesn't need one.

My concern is the misery of entering complex passwords into forms with a tv remote.   This is ameliorated via 'Plex Link' where you login on your PC, access a Plex URL, and enter a few digits shown on the TV screen.  This then authenticates the Android device to my account and only PINs are required to access those local users.

In short, my questions are:

  • Emby Connect works well, but entering a decent password via the remote is a major PITA.  Is each user required to login via this method to be 'attached' to the Emby server?  Is there functionality like 'Plex Link's pin code instead?
  • The profile PIN function seems to allow prompting for a PIN on a shared device.  However it would be easier for younger kids not to need to enter one.  Is this possible after initial setup?
  • Can users set their own PIN?

Thanks very much in advance for your help.

Hi.  You can do exactly the same thing with us but you do need to enter the password once on each device.

You cannot use Connect because that is not designed for user switching (it is a direct one-user connection to a server).

Users only have a PIN if you (or they) set one.

Fantastic.  I think trying to use Connect sent me down a rabbit warren I didn't need to follow.

I really appreciate your speedy assistance.  Thank you.
