Video background playback with the screen off/locked - android phone

I know this is going to sound odd, but I can't seem to figure this out. My wife will literally stream movies and/or TV shows all day long with an ear bud in one ear. She has it in an overlay or PiP on her phone while she does whatever she does on the phone, then sets it down and leaves the screen on and facing up. Ambient light keeps the screen at max brightness all the damned time. She ruined her OnePlus 7T McLaren with screen burn-in. I just bought a Pixel 7 and would like to make sure the screen shuts off no matter what.

As soon as I lock the screen though, playback stops. I haven't tested with audio because she only ever listens to videos. (I don't get it either). Is there a setting I don't know about or any way to do what I want?

Yes I did, but I did not see anything about background playback.
