Nat Hill remote 8 Posted September 1, 2023 Posted September 1, 2023 (edited) My ONN box from Walmart shows the following using "stats for nerds." The broadcast is ATSC 3.0, and Emby has done a great job with the picture and sound. My questions are these 1) is the box actually showing HEVC and sending out AC4 sound? 2) What is the "Conversion reason" and "Direct option disabled" all about. HELP! Nat Hill remote 8 Posted September 1, 2023 Author Posted September 1, 2023 (edited) Slight clarification for above question #1. Question #1 should have said: Is my television set, receiving a stream from my SiliconDust tuner and Emby server, showing me actual HEVC video and sending out actual AC4 audio? Solution ebr 16178 Posted September 2, 2023 Solution Posted September 2, 2023 Hi. It is showing the video direct (HEVC) but I believe the audio is being converted to AC3 (straight Dolby). An ffmpeg log would confirm this. The reason for the remux is because you have not enabled the "Direct stream live TV" option in the app. You can try enabling this - which may get you direct playback but only if the box does support AC4. You also would lose the trick-play (seeking) ability in the stream if you do that though.
Nat Hill remote 8 Posted September 5, 2023 Author Posted September 5, 2023 I appreciate your response and will mark it as solved. I could not find a "Direct stream live TV" option on the Roku app. But it is working just fine as pictured, even if converted, so I'm good to go. I don't even understand the difference between converting and trans-coding, so I have to consider it amazing I'm able to get this far! And amazed Emby can make ATSC 3.0 work as well as it does. with all the machinations involved. Keep up the good work And thanks for taking the time to answer. 1

Nat Hill remote 8 Posted September 7, 2023 Author Posted September 7, 2023 I will do it again with the right device this time. It's an ONN Box from Walmart, which I think is Android. No Roku involved. No idea where I came up with that.
Luke 42078 Posted September 7, 2023 Posted September 7, 2023 OK so yes it looks like it's streaming the original video but converting the audio.
Nat Hill remote 8 Posted September 8, 2023 Author Posted September 8, 2023 So is it correct to say that the Emby Server transcodes when necessary, but is somehow magically able to understand when a device is capable of converting the stream itself? It's impressive if that's indeed the case. Keep up the great work folks.
pwhodges 2012 Posted September 8, 2023 Posted September 8, 2023 The devices identify themselves to Emby, and (I think) report their capabilities; not really magic! Paul
