justinrh 260 Posted April 23, 2023 Posted April 23, 2023 The Android TV app on my Shield has a playback setting of "Match Video Resolution". When and why should I use this setting? What resolution is being matched with what resolution? (What is driving what to make the match?)
justinrh 260 Posted April 24, 2023 Author Posted April 24, 2023 (edited) Indeed I saw that post but it didn't answer all my questions, though it does give some good details Maybe I'm just dunce and need a bit more info Edited April 24, 2023 by justinrh

ebr 16176 Posted April 25, 2023 Posted April 25, 2023 Matching resolution is a sub-option of the frame rate switching - you cannot enable it without the frame rate also. Some people want their TV to do any upscaling so they want to only switch the frame rate and not also match the resolution of the video so this sub option allows that. 1
Solution rbjtech 5284 Posted April 25, 2023 Solution Posted April 25, 2023 To add, the Shield 2019 has some pretty advanced upscaling (see below) and this is very likely better than what the 'TV' could do. So in this case, you would NOT want to match resolution, because the Shield is upscaling it for you anyway. The TV then receives an already scaled image and thus does not need to scale it again. This is where you would have frame rate matching ON but match resolution OFF. SHIELD TV | AI Upscaling (nvidia.com) 1

This is not true. I can enable them independently, and they are not presented as super vs sub options (no hierarchy).
justinrh 260 Posted April 26, 2023 Author Posted April 26, 2023 So, is it correct to say that with the match video resolution unchecked, the TV is upscaling, but with it checked, Emby is upscaling?

Sorry, they were originally dependent until the scenario rbj mentioned was requested. 11 hours ago, justinrh said: So, is it correct to say that with the match video resolution unchecked, the TV is upscaling, but with it checked, Emby is upscaling? No, that is not really correct. "Emby" never upscales your video. Your device operates in video "modes" that consist of both a resolution and a refresh rate - e.g. 1080/60, 1080/30, 2160/24 etc. The options simply govern whether or not the app will search for a mode that matches resolution, refresh rate, or both. In all cases, it is just switching the display device mode.
justinrh 260 Posted April 27, 2023 Author Posted April 27, 2023 Okay, after rereading all this stuff again, I think I understand how it works and what I should probably do. Thanks everyone. 1
