I need some nerdy explanation about stats for nerds.  I use the Android TV app on my Shield.  It shows the output for the video.  Is this output what Emby is sending, what the player is playing, or what the TV system is actually doing?

Hi, it shows what Emby is sending to the video player.

SFN in AndroidTV shows more useful info then SFN on the Standard Android App - especially for TV usage.

The Original Media Info is shown (how it appears in MediaInfo), Streaming Info (showing what emby is doing to it - if anything) and importantly, it also shows the Playback Info - including the capabilities of the TV, Display mode incl Refresh Rate being used - and the Stream type.

So if you have Refresh rate matching on for example - it should be showing the Display mode as 2160/23.98 for example.

Stream Type is also important for me to show 'File' as opposed to 'http'.

Everything should say 'Direct' in Streaming Info - if not, then for me there is an issue as the playback is being modified.

I think some of this extra info has been requested to be added to the Standard App.

Quick comparison below of the 3 Android Clients playing a 4K remux at maximum capability -

a) - Android TV (single Press and Hold of the OK Button)

b) Android

c) WMV for Android

imo - AndroidTV still reigns supreme but it is nice that Android shows the track Titles - that is useful if they are present, consistent and correct ..

Thanks for the details @rbjtech.  What is this "WMV for Android" you mention?  I can't seem to find it.

And how do you control File vs HTTP playback?  Why is that important to you?

I agree the ATV output is superior (in presentation/readability and information).

ATV app is superior in pretty much everything...

WMV is this -

Emby for AndroidTV on the previous Android 9 OS allowed you to 'mount' your file shares - allowing REAL Direct file playback - the same as VLC and KODI does.  No streaming is involved, the file comes direct from the Storage to the Shield - Emby is not involved in the file transfer once it has been established.   For high bandwidth playback on lower powered equipment, this is essential as it simply removes the middleman (emby server)  from the equation.  However, Eric made the decision to remove this option in the latest Android 11 update - because it involved the user having to 'agree' on additional permissions.  My view was the fact you had setup the mounts, you should know that you need permissions lol.. but it fell on deaf ears.  Yes it's a small userbase that would use this enhanced functionality, but as the top client (and still is..), removing this was the start of AndroidTV's demise .. :(   I even downgraded by AndroidTV back to Android 9 so I could retain it..

The Unix and Windows Emby Theatre clients also have this mode - and it works beautifully.  It uses the 'optional' path in the emby library setup.

For many - this is the only way to get high bandwidth 4K playback - 'streaming' simply adds too much network latency into the chain.

Maybe if Emby used HTTP/3, the latency would be low enough to make streaming viable?

On a LAN, the http protocol version is irrelevant - http/1 is perfectly ok, as it is for WAN in this particular use case/environment.

Direct, with as little protocol overhead is always preferable vs multiple protocols/conversions.

If you have the time - take a look at this LONG thread.

"Stats for nerds" is a feature offered by many online video platforms that provides viewers with a range of technical information about the video being watched. This information includes data such as the video resolution, codec, and frame rate, as well as information about the audio quality and bitrate. The feature is particularly useful for individuals who are interested in the technical of video production or who need to troubleshoot issues related to video playback. By accessing the "Stats for nerds" feature, viewers can gain a better understanding of the technical specifications of a video and make adjustments to their settings or playback devices as needed to optimize their viewing experience.

Just switched from emby for Android TV to emby for Android (standard). Using the 2019 Shield Pro.

On the ATV version I can press and hold on the center button to bring up stats for nerds during playback but on the standard emby for Android this doesn't work.

Is there another shortcut to do this or is the shortcut not built into the standard Android version.

Thx

HI, you're able to reach it from the gear menu though, right?

Yes, it's available through the gear menu but that's a lot of clicks to view it and turn it off. Also, not able to rewind and fast forward live TV even after pausing the stream. Both of these functions work very well in the ATV app but are missing from the Android version. I don't think it's a bug. Seems like those features just haven't been programmed in yet. Thx
