ATV audio playback it set to 'auto', and my Shield is not set to upscale stereo, but when I play some (2 channel) stereo videos, the soundbar says I'm playing Dolby (the TV says Dolby Audio - DD).  The TS files are direct streaming.  Why and how am I getting Dolby?

DD or Dolby Digital Dolby Surround is a matrix format which tries to compress several channels into two using subtle fiddling with phase changes.  It can be decoded into the original multiple channels, but with lots of cross-talk, or the two channels can be played as stereo with some phasey artefacts. (Edit - see answer below for correction)

So why am I getting DD instead of the original AC3 stereo?

AC3 is the name of the encoding in Dolby Digital.  It can be used for 2-channel sources as well as 5.1 - you simply have a two-channel AC3 stream.

N.B. My previous answer is wrong - I was describing "Dolby Surround".  The terminology of the many Dolby formats is confusing and easy to get lost in!
