strichmo 21 Posted December 19, 2022 Posted December 19, 2022 I have a movie with 2 versions - A 4K rip and a 1080p rip: I've done this because most devices and in particular remote play can't do 4K well. However Emby doesn't currently select 1080p as the default, even if the player is set to a 1080p quality. This makes this version feature very almost useless as most of my family won't know to change it to 1080p from the above version option before playing (this option isn't even available after hitting play from the movies list). Can we please have an option to set the version default and/or a little bit of logic to switch video version if the chosen resolution fits?
Happy2Play 9783 Posted December 19, 2022 Posted December 19, 2022 Not really enough info as I would guess both version may need transcoding?

Yes both will likely need some transcoding. But that's not the problem. This problem is that the chosen file to transcode is the 4K one, which is extremely heavy on the server. Here is a test account I setup and used on the Chrome web app to play the movie. As you can see even though the chosen user speed is 1080p, it still selects the 4K file to transcode:
Solution Happy2Play 9783 Posted December 19, 2022 Solution Posted December 19, 2022 (edited) Unfortunately the resolution means absolutely nothing in the quality settings, bitrate with actually determine resolution. So you would need a lower bitrate. But it may not matter if both require transcoding. Edited December 19, 2022 by Happy2Play 1
