Hi Emby community!

I'm here because I've hit a complete wall in trying to get remote access to my Emby server set up

My emby server is hosted by my Terramaster F2-210 NAS and I can't seem to get remote accesss working at all

I have tried with UPnP on and off

With port forwarding and a function my Netgear router has called port Triggering set up on both Http and Https ports

I have even tried changing the ports that are bound to the server to something other then the default as well

Nothing is working, and I am not able to connect to the server at all. I have tried myself with my phone with wifi turned off, and my friend who lives in a different state altogether has also tried to connect to it (with permission of course) and that is still not working

I'm really at a wall here, and I do not know what else to do. when checking on ismyportopen.com on both the internal and external IP addresses it says the port is closed. but I can't figure out how to open the port beyond port forwarding

Any help would really be appreciated

(I also posted this to the Terramaster subforum but it also seems like I could get more help in the general forum too)

Are you using a VPN?

Have you done a tracert to see if ISP uses a CGNAT?

Not using a VPN no, and I didnt think it wasa CGNAT but doing the tracert test makes it seem like it is. is there a way around CGNAT? or do i need to go to my ISP to see if they can disable it

Ok yeah if i could get a guide or something for the cloudflare, with the NAS specifically if there is one that would probably be the best way to do it

I found this tutorial, which let me connect to Emby with a VPN that doesn't require port forwarding. (Just make sure that you use port 8096 for Emby instead of port 32400 which the article recommends). Hope this is helpful!

I figured it out. while talking to my ISP about disabling CGNAT they told me to try a port forward on the modem they provided and now it is working. so basically I have a port forward on my modem that is forwarding the 8096 port for my router only, and then a port forward on my router forwarding 8096 port to my NAS

You had a double NAT situation going on. :)
Glad you got it figured out!

Hello

Most ISP cannot help us with CGNAT IPV4 even when you contact them. CGNAT disable user interfaces concerning port forwarding on ISP routers. so a lot of users cannot use emby.

unless you have ipv6 public ip also assigned to your lan machines by your isp.

With IPv6 and isp routers, the external port inside routers user interface  is the same as internal port (no port forwarding anymore needed). so basicaly in ipv6 you just tell your router to autorise port 8096 to accept incoming tcp connections from the elsewhere wan. the connection is direct without NAT or port forwarding.

basically with ipv6 you may be saved easier, unless you need other port than 8096. if you need for exemple port X443 (for exemple if you use a cdn cloud) in ipv6 to be autorized through your router, some nas emby version do not autorise to change in user interface the local https port which should be listening. you may have to change the system.xml file in ssh with is quite funny...

most CGNAT users with no ipv6 stack cannot use emby at all.

there is 3 or 4 types of ISP routers

CGNAT IPV4 (damned mode) + IPV6 (direct connection + FW) --> growing fast

IPV4 (with Nat and port forwarding available) +IPV6 (direct connection + FW) -> getting rare

IPV4 (with Nat and port forwarding available) with no ipV6 -> getting rare

CGNAT IPV4 (damned mode, no port forwarding, no isp help) with no ipv6 stack -> not so rare (but most users are doomed).

why doomed, would you say, because most users wont even want to try the awfull method to setup a vpn to bypass CGNAT issues, because most ISP do not want to help people on CGNAT infrastructures.  why a emby user should have deep pain with buying emby plus buying a vpn service to buypass CGNAT stuff ? in case of no help comming from our isp.

choosing a true ipv6 isp is a way better and faster to setup that all this old techno crap (CGNAT,  port forwading issues , extra VPN service etc) and that is why emby should improve ipv6 friendlyness.

PS : Beware even if you do a traceroute to 8.8.8.8 to check is your isp uses CGNAT. sometimes emby users may be CGNATed even if you do not see some private addresses before a real public one. Some ISP even share 1 public ip with 3 customers, directly on dslams...

Double NAT port forwarding.

Double NAT port forwarding.

He is lucky. Most ISP with a IPV4 stack, can help you just with one port forwarding NAT, if the NAT is done directly on your home router.

But those who are CGNAT or nated elsewhere in the cloud, most of the time you cannot configure a port forwarding, and even ask to do multiple port forwarding.

the only solution is to have an ISP home router that provide true ipv6 direct connections to your lan servers with embedded firewall, and no port forwarding.

ipv6 is the key in this case, to help emby users.

I do not know if the port forwarding on my personal router was required really, it was just already done when I did the port forwarding on my ISP supplied Modem/router. so I may have just needed to do the port forward on my ISP supplied Modem/router and the personal router Port Forwarding may have been unnecessary. who knows.
