Can’t login to my server

Good Evening

I ran into an issue earlier today when my pc would crash repeatedly I was trying to narrow down the issue and thought that it had something to do with running the Emby server

I had made another post a few days ago where I was having trouble with metadata that was missing some people suggested I check the log but that didn’t help because of how long ago the initial isssue started so I manually scanned the metadata from the dashboard. I thought I had come to fix my issue when today after my pc was crashing I went to hit click same tab and it seemed as if it that task was triggering the crash. After hours of troubleshooting I realized it was webroot antivirus causing the issue and after uninstalling, it hasn’t crashed since.

So here’s where I’ve now come to a major issue

I had to scan all my libraries once again and that was just about done when the server just stopped working completely

I tried logging in with connect using the server address and all but nothing would work
after several tries I got a message saying I needed to update the server when it was already updated to the most recent version

I continued to try and access my server and I just redownloaded Emby no matter how I log in I can’t get back to my original server everything is like I’m starting from scratch

all my media libraries, metadata, and such are in the same folder that they were in but I don’t want to do everything all over again could someone  please try helping me.

Hi.  Exactly how did you try to login?  Connect wouldn't use the address but you really shouldn't be using that to access your own server on your own network anyway.

Can you access the server from the machine it is installed on?

I tried logging in with the server address and my username but it’s not working
and  I’ve tried to access it on the pc the server is installed on but still having issues

What exactly happens when you try?

It would say server not available or can’t connect to server my address has changed before but that’s not the issue I’m using the ip address that is shown in my settings

Hi,

Is this Windows the server is running on?
You have tried to login using that computer (running server)?

From the Emby Server machine using Chrome or Edge Browser try these two addresses:

http://127.0.0.1:8096
http://localhost:8096
https://localhost:8920

Note the third one has a different port as well as uses an s for https.

Do you get a login screen from any of the above?

If not, if you open Task Manager then go to the detail tab do you see EmbyServer running.

From file manager type this in the location field

%appdata%\EmbyServer

You should see a few subdirectories including Logs.  Enter the logs folder and sort by date.  Upload the most current version of the server log file.

Thanks,

Carlo

I have since moved on to setup the Emby server on my synology instead of my pc

I finally figured why I ran into some issues with dsm7 not being able to recognize my folders but I have resolved that as well

now I am trying to get the remote connections sorted using a external domain

Have you verified a site like canyouseeme.org shows Emby ports open?

Did change port forwarding on your router to the Synology address?

Ok on my ASUS router the synology has a different ip than what is shown in the Emby dashboard the Emby dashboard has my routers ip address for the remote access

Emby should show your LAN and WAN address.  But in your router did you do port forwarding for 8096/8920 to your Synology LAN address.

I have the external port as 8096 the internal port I left blank because it says *optional should I set that as 8920?

Port Forwarding will be 8096 for both internal and external.  If you are doing https then you will need an additional rule for 8920.

@howieT82You want to make sure you see both a local and remote address being shown on the Emby Dashbord.

In the network menu settings you want to have:
"Allow remote connections to this Emby Server" should be checked/enabled.
"Enable automatic port mapping" should be unchecked/disabled
Some builds of Emby Server (because of OS/requirements) do not allow changing the local ports and always use 8096 & 8920.

Synology and some other NAS builds will not have local ports shown but are set already to 8096 and 8920.
If Local http port number is shown, set to: 8096
If Local https port number is shown, set to 8920
Public http port number: 8096
Public https port number: 8920

Leave these fields blank
External domain:
Custom ssl certificate path:
Certificate password:
Secure connection mode:
Remote IP address filter:
Internet streaming bitrate limit (Mbps):

Secure connection mode: Disabled
Max simultaneous video streams: Unlimited
Remote IP address filter mode: whitelist
"LAN networks:" is likely already set to: 10.0.0.0/8, 192.168.0.0/24 and should be left alone
"Local IP address:" leave this blank for now which will make Emby Server use the default IP of the machine.  Can be useful but don't worry about that right now.

Click the SAVE button.

You can remove the "Port Mapper" plugin as we will not be using it.
Restart Emby Server

After Emby Restarts you should see both InHouse and Remote connections on the Dashboard, both using IPs and port 8096.
If you do this on both the PC and the NAS, they should both show the same Remote address which is fine but only one will be in use with the other at the ready as a spare.

How you perform the next step is going to be different depending on your router but briefly you want to:
Login to your router, go to advanced settings, find the screen used to setup Port Forwarding.
If there are other ports already setup for 8096 or 8920 remove them.
You will now setup 1 new port forward.  Every router does this it's own way but essentially you want

WAN/External IP Port 8096 -> IP running Emby Server Port 8096
TCP Protocol

Here is an example during Setup of a Verizon Router.  Note the forwarding address is selected by a dropdown list where you can see the Synology 920 was chosen.
image.png

NOTE: You can set the forward to Address as either the PC or NAS address.  Ideally you will have the PC as the Primary Server running Emby but also have the Synology setup and working that is your backup system. If you ever have a problem with the PC you can quickly edit this Port Forward rule changing only the Forward to address pointing it to the NAS instead of the PC and it will get used instead.

In a browser open a tab and go to either
https://portchecker.co/
https://canyouseeme.org/

Change the port to 8096 and run the test. If it shows open then you should be all set. If you are going to have a primary and backup server test both IP after adjusting the port forwarding rule in the router.

If the test shows closed port you need to reviews the steps again to see if you missed something.

There are reasons you can fail the port test including:
ISP has you behind a CGNAT
You are running a VPN
You have firewall rules in place on the router or local machine
You are running some type of security software that is interfering

Try the above and let us know how you make out.

I dont have my vpn on and I turned off firewall in router settings I also uninstalled the mcafee software

When I checked the can you see and port checker sites its still coming up as closed @cayars

Open a command box and from the command line type

tracert 8.8.8.8

This will have information semi-private to your environment so don't paste that info here.

What we want to look at is the IPs that come after your home router.

Do you see any IP address that starts with a 172, 198 or 10?

If you like, send me the tracert results via private message (hover over my avatar) and I'll take a look.

I thought I had updated my response but I have everything back in working order it was my port forwarding rules that I needed to tweak I appreciate everyones help with this.
