Video Buffering on Local network ONLY

According to the other people I've asked outside of my local network, things seem to be streaming/transcoding fine with no buffering.

When I go to watch my TV Shows on my local network on my Apple TV or even my Chrome browser, I get buffering every couple of seconds. I've tried multiple video quality options including Auto, although I can't do that on the Apple TV... yet?? Anyways, I'm wondering if its something stupid I have set wrong, or if it's the strain on the network and it chooses to deliver better quality to outside people... Not sure. I have the logs attached, if there isn't anything out of the ordinary, I can probably blame it on the RAID array i have set up. I am doing work on it and the performance was slowed. If that's the case though, it means others HAVE to be having this lag too. Either way, if there is something I can do to fix it. I'd LOVE to try.

@crash1015 A guess is the biterate doubling when transcoding h265 to h264 to maintain quality.  As this log shows media bitrate of 32114155 being converted to 64228310.

If you lowered the client quality setting, do you get the same results?

On my browser, the original was 4K. I tried the highest in hopes direct stream would kick in, but i believe subtitles prevented direct stream from working. So I tried 4K at the lowest setting, no luck. Same amount of buffering. I tried 1080 at the highest and lowest. Same exact intervals in buffering. I tried Auto after that and after I saw the same result, I came here.

I changed the H264 encoding CRF to a couple notches down and it seemed to fix it... I'll keep testing though tonight.

Has this held up?

So at this point if anyone else has Windows Storage Spaces, when that is under load for reasons like Optimization, I'm assuming the read speeds drop. Which probably created my issue. I'm thinking dropping the CRF just helped me out. I noticed the buffering. But only once or twice over the past couple days. When the optimization is done, I'll turn the CRF back to the default and see if i notice problems.

Still doesn't explain my issue being only on LAN... But as my old boss used to say... Never trust a user lol. I HAVE to assume others had this issue too and just didn't want to admit they noticed it.

Edit: When transcoding with subtitles, is it true that gets limited to the CPU at one core? How does that work?

Just merging of the subs is still done in software - even when the other stages are in hardware.  The code to do it in hardware as well I think is written but still being tested.

So that wouldn't have any impact on my issue right?

I don't think that's your issue, no.

I'm marking my other idea as the answer tonight if i don't have issues again. The optimization of my drives is at 67%. It's taken days. I'll reply soon with an update, once i'm able to switch everything back to normal.

You would have to compare the rates your Remote user are playing compared to what you are playing on your LAN.  I highly doubt a Remote user is getting a 64Mbps transcode.

So I would assume lowering the in-app quality to a lower bitrate would correct your issue.  Also instead of a browser you should use Desktop Emby Theater.

You only see this issue when transcoding on your LAN correct?

Honestly it seems like my PC does fine now. Every once in a while last night it was buffering, but it wasn't as common. That is on my Apple TV using the Emby app.

The optimization finished today. Sorry for my delayed answer. I'll have one tonight if it's fixed haha.

So sorry for the delay!! It’s working perfect now. Has to user error there. Sorry!
