dcruff 15 Posted September 5, 2022 Posted September 5, 2022 Emby on Unraid has worked flawlessly for several months. This morning it froze up (not the server) and wouldn't allow me to log in as a user. It says that I'm not recognized. I rebooted the Unraid server and still no luck. I can still log in to emby.media and see my server listed, but it won't let me log in "Connection Failure - We're unable to connect to the selected server right now. Please ensure it is running and try again." Now, unraid says that "Share appdata references non existent pool cache" which I can't figure out how to fix. When I try to go log on to Emby directly from the Unraid GUI, Emby acts like this is a first time setup and wants me to start setting up Emby all over again. Suggestions? Dave
dcruff 15 Posted September 5, 2022 Author Posted September 5, 2022 Now it looks like my SSD is listed as 'Unmountable' which is where my cache is. Not sure what my next step should be. Dave
Luke 42260 Posted September 5, 2022 Posted September 5, 2022 hi, perhaps you may want to look at resolving the ssd mount first?
dcruff 15 Posted September 5, 2022 Author Posted September 5, 2022 I ordered a new SSD just in case which should be here shortly (Hooray for Amazon same day shipments). Would it be best to just replace the SSD drive? I think that my Samsung 1TB SSD may have had some problems, so I'm looking at replacing it with a 500GB SSD since it really is not heavily used on the Emby server anyways. Do you think that everything should just come back fine once I put a newly formatted SSD in the server? Right now, without a functioning Cache Drive, Emby thinks this is a new install and wants all new accounts and probably everything else. It appears that my media drives are just fine and waiting to be used again by a normally functioning Emby. Or do I need to find a settings backup on the server to somehow restore this information? Would losing the cache drive, which the appdata folder uses, cause this amnesia behavior?
dcruff 15 Posted September 6, 2022 Author Posted September 6, 2022 Well, now I'm getting more information about the cache drive. This statement just appeared on my settings page "Errors found" "If the disk is listed as being unmountable, and it has data on it, whatever you do do not hit the format button. Seek assistance HERE". When I click on "Here", I get routed to the community forum and haven't been able to find answers yet. Are there any other resources available to help me solve this? I'm at an impasse. I was going to put in my new SSD, but now I'm afraid to and want to know if there's a way to recover the data on the previous SSD.
dcruff 15 Posted September 6, 2022 Author Posted September 6, 2022 OK, here's my question - The only thing that I am missing because of my failed SSD Cache Drive is the 'appdata'. I'm not using the cache for anything else. I have a pluggin that backed up my configuration. I access to the array drives which shows a daily backup of all Emby Configuration files, including: Users, Userdata, plugins, library and others. Bening as that is the case, do I just put in my new SSD, format it, and start up emby as a fresh start, and then locate my backed-up configuration files (probably after loading the Backup Pluggin)?

You could do that yes. If you have a full backup of the entire folder you could also just restore that manually. Please let us know how that goes. Thanks.
dcruff 15 Posted September 7, 2022 Author Posted September 7, 2022 Everything seemed to start up fine. All user accounts and pluggins are fine. The system is very lethargic and the graphics are taking hours to update, whereas they were immediate previously. Now I've got various issues on my Apple TV and Roku clients. They started out OK, but now are not showing any of the 4000 movies. I've restarted the server docker, but it's still not working right.
dcruff 15 Posted September 7, 2022 Author Posted September 7, 2022 Actually, I wonder if it's taking up all of the server resources right now as it scans and updates all media. All of my Series are showing, but without any graphics and now data - meaning that when I select Alias, Emby tells me that there are no seasons or episodes, even though all of the data (media) is still intact on the Array. Maybe the update scan hasn't gotten to the 'Series", "Music Concerts", or any of the other categories of my media. The only data that appears to be accessible is "Movies" and "Collections", and more media graphics are slowly starting to appear.

dcruff 15 Posted September 8, 2022 Author Posted September 8, 2022 It seems to be freezing up Emby often. Do you know what file system I should have formatted my SSD Cache Drive with? I chose Xfs but I don't remember what it was before. Emby appeared to just be taking it's time, but now it seems to be going nowhere.
dcruff 15 Posted September 8, 2022 Author Posted September 8, 2022 I tried clearing the SSD and reformatting it to start over again and restore my Emby settings. Emby still comes up and freezes. I'm trying to start over again and then use my settings backup. Can someone show me how to do it? Do I need to completely uninstall Emby and then reinstall it?
dcruff 15 Posted September 8, 2022 Author Posted September 8, 2022 (edited) Is it safe to uninstall EMBY on my unraid, re-install it, and then use the backed up configuration to restore everything afterwards? I don't want the uninstall to mess with my media directories on the Unraid array. Edited September 8, 2022 by dcruff
dcruff 15 Posted September 9, 2022 Author Posted September 9, 2022 (edited) It's really gotten quiet here on this page. I've just realized that I didn't have my new SSD set up as a cache drive, but now that it is, EMBY still freezes up after showing a graphics-less Home Page. I can't even get the settings icon to respond. I'd love to clear my settings and start out by restoring my settings section by section. Is there a way to start out Emby in "Safe Mode"? It appears that Emby is no longer going to the SSD Cache drive looking for it's configuration in 'appdata'. How do I change that back? Edited September 9, 2022 by dcruff

What is 'appdata'? If that is Emby's programdata folder then you lost your entire Install and Emby has to do and entire rebuild. Yes you have Configuration backups that you restored but Emby still has to rebuild the database do you have to wait for and initial scan to reimport and get one all your media. But honestly sounds like you have too many things going on and need to start from scratch or very limited restore. Devs may need to see server logs also.
dcruff 15 Posted September 9, 2022 Author Posted September 9, 2022 Thank you. I was just able to reset the configuration to again look at the cache and Emby gave me the opportunity to start from scratch and restore the configuration. Hoping it works this time.
dcruff 15 Posted September 10, 2022 Author Posted September 10, 2022 Well, it's up and running and works fine on the local network. I thought it was completely done and announced it to my married kids and siblings, but, not so fast! Now I've got the age old problem of no one being able to log in remotely, including me on my cell phone with Wi-Fi turned off. We can't connect to the server remotely. I don't know what might have changed other than the IP address, but I can't even type that in and get a connection. "Connection Failure - We're unable to connect to the selected server right now. Please ensure it is running and try again"

After replacing the SSD Cache drive, I found that I had to do a partial restore, instead of a complete restore of the configuration. Something was dragging down all of the resources in the server. So after several attempts of clearing the SSD cache (reformatting) and restoring the configuration, I decided to just restore all of the media library information and the user accounts and nothing else. I also changed the server name and had to add email addresses to each of the users (24) so that Emby would add them to the server. Then notified the users to use the new server name, and log in again. Things are running smoothly now. Great performance is back. 1
