I searched some of these terms but mostly saw more advanced topics. Thanks to many of you here in the forums, this not tech savvy newb is loving Emby at home via my Fire Stick.

When I go on vacation, I always take my Fire Stick, plug it into the hotel TV, connect to the hotel wi-fi and bam, I have Netflix, Amazon, etc.

From what I've read, I should also be able to access my home files remotely via Emby on Fire Stick. What is the easiest way to do this? Is there a step by step guide for dummies?

Thanks!

You need to setup your server for remote access, have a read here:

Thanks! I followed the instructions and it appears that the initial server and router settings suggested in the article are already enabled by default. According to the article I should be able to access remote now, without having to move on to the more complicated settings that appear later in the article. I guess next time I travel, I will put it to the test! Thanks again!

You can test it at home using a phone with the wifi turned off - cellular data is external to your network.  You don't even have to install a client - you can use a browser.

I turned off my phone wi-fi, opened my browser and typed in the same url I normally use to log in on my desktop (starts with http://localhost) and it says "local host refused to connect).

You didn't read far enough down in the article you used to set up the router...

Last stupid question (for this thread anyway): I presume if I go out of town, that my desktop computer (where my external hard drive and media files are plugged into) would have to be left ON for this to work?

Yes..

...But you can download files in advance to your device but the fire stick has verrrrry little memory for this.

Yes, everyone has been very helpful as always! I still haven't tested it on my Fire stick but the solution above worked on my phone.
