GPU transcoding when the media file has subtitles built in is painful

The vast majority of my media has at least some form of subtitles within the media file itself. Is there any plan to remove this restriction?

Hi there, what format subtitles?

Not sure exactly what details you're looking for. But as a quick test I played one of my movies and chose a lower bitrate to force transcoding. The movie is an mp4 with internal subtitles. The screenshot below is a transcode with subtitles turned off:

Which restriction you are referring to?

According to the documentation I read a few days ago it was noted that if the media has internal subtitle tracks then then GPU transcoding is disabled isn't it?

Of course not. Don't know what platform your server runs on, but Emby Premiere is a prerequisite for Hardware Accelerated transcoding in most cases. And it is unrelated to the presence of internal subs.

If you'd be so kind to direct us where have you found that info, as it might need correction?

Looks like I misread the info at the bottom of this page: https://support.emby.media/support/solutions/articles/44001160148-hardware-acceleration-overview

I will say this - I was entirely unaware that you needed Premiere to enable hardware decoding, and I've looked at it multiple times. The support page does not mention this. You guys could do a lot better to advertise it in the server menus. IE "Now Playing" should tell me that I need it if I want hardware decoding. I've been looking for a good reason to support Emby!

Server Settings>Transcoding tab denotes "This feature requires an active Emby Premiere subscription" right on top, under "Enable hardware accelleration when available".

But I agree, it should also be mentioned in support documentation. @cayars

What exactly do you mean? It's mentioned all over the place that HW acceleration requires Emby Premiere.
I know there are a couple KB articles explaining what different things are/support provided that don't specifically mention this such as https://support.emby.media/support/solutions/articles/44001160148-hardware-acceleration-overview

Would you like me to try and make sure Emby Premiere is mentioned on any page that mentions HW acceleration in any context?
HW Decoding is of course part of this just as HW Encoding is as both are "HW acceleration".  Is this what you think could use clarification?
Or both? :)

While I'm happy to make such changes to KB articles to help clarify things like this I think it's pretty clear regardless in the Transcoding menu that any use of HW acceleration require Premiere.

Yeah, I'd say OP was referring to that particular "HWA overview" page, I reckon a single line stating that active Emby Premiere subscription is required on majority of platforms and link pointing to Premiere matrix where it can be explored should suffice.
