I want to know what the name emby stands for, or the origin of the name

What does emby mean? Is it an abbreviation of some words

Rebranding of "MediaBrowser" (MB).

I never knew that but I did know that emby was originally MediaBrowser.....probably why I like it so much.  I found MediaBrowser probably 15 years ago and was using it as a plugin to Windows Media Center to organize my DVDs.

It "might" be the case that what you used before is the precursor of the current Emby, and I most believe this is true. However at the time of MediaBroser coming into existence there was at least one and maybe several other programs of the same name and at least one came into existence before Emby's entry.

At about the time that Emby dropped the name, mostly, MediaBrowser was being use by others.
That may or may not have had an impact on the decision to change their name but, at the time and from someone that was not on the inside, I really think there was some pressure for a name change.

Maybe Emby stands for "Enhanced Media Browser for You" but, unless someone at Emby actually says what it means, or was intended to mean, we may never really know the "Truth." But, even then, Truth is subjective.

Old thread, but I stumbled on it...and wanted to comment as it brought back memories.

I was always told it was as @Happy2Playsaid above...simply sounding out initials of the old MediaBrowser:  M   B

Although as you said..even truth is subjective.  :)

I would assume that @ebror @Luke could confirm it.  Or...maybe not, and just leave it to be Lore forever.  ;)

From the same blog entry linked above:

So, introducing our new, short, catchy name that still pays homage to our origins (it sounds like "MB" when you say it)

Or I guess we could just read the blog and be done with it.  🙄

I thought Happy posted a screenshot of something they had...I didn't realize the blog actually went back that far!  Cool.

It's just like fast food chain Arby's.

Arby = RB = Roast Beef

And (nearly) everything at Arby's is some variation of their sliced roast beef made into different versions of sandwiches.

Now I learned something new today!  That is awesome, I have eaten Arby's for 50 years and never thought that for a second!  🤣
