SeekingWisdom 1 Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 (edited) I have been using emby for a couple years now. I have recently upgraded to version 4.6.7.0 I have 3 different Roku boxes. Today I tried to access emby on one of them and it requires me to log in. From the emby dashboard which is on my synology box if I look under "Users" there is only 1 user "emby". When I select the emby name on the roku box (as part of the login) and enter the password it doesn't work - tried it multiple times. Back on dashboard running on my synology server if I click on the User "emby" there is a "Password" button on the top of the page. When I click on this button it gives me the ability to change the password. The problem is that you must enter the old password and for some reason it is no longer the one I have used for the last couple years and I cannot change the password. How do I change the password? Thanks in advance. Edited March 12, 2022 by SeekingWisdom

Hi there, are you confusing Emby Connect login vs. the local login on your Emby Server? They are two different things. If you don't remember the local password on your Emby Server, perhaps try going to through forgot password process, which is on the login screen. 1
SeekingWisdom 1 Posted March 15, 2022 Author Posted March 15, 2022 (edited) In my original post I am referring to single login, the login on my roku box On my roku box after I select emby it is asking me to log in. I have to select a user and "emby" is available from the box. The reason I chose "emby" is because that is the only user I find if I view the "users" in the emby application running on my synology server. This is what I tried to describe anyway. Logging into my synology server is not a problem and proven since i can access the emby application running on that server from the web browser after logging into the synology server itself in order to get the "users" described above. Am I missing something? After all I am seeking wisdom - if I had it I would not need to ask the question. Edited March 15, 2022 by SeekingWisdom

Hi. This must mean the password is not what you think it is. You should be able to use the "Reset Password" feature Luke referenced.
SeekingWisdom 1 Posted March 15, 2022 Author Posted March 15, 2022 (edited) I think there is something I am missing here. I log into synology server on which emby runs and enter the emby application. From the 3 horizontal lines I select "manage emby server" Then from the left side I select "users" This shows me the "emby" user which I want to reset password on and I click on that user. That page at top has profile, access, parental control and password so I click on password This page at top has "current password", new password and new password confirm I don't see reset password anywhere (I have attached a screenshot). And for what its worth I keep all my passwords in a secure password "thing". I dont even need to look at it since I know the emby user password but did look to confirm it was the correct one. This comment is not relevant in that I need to reset the password. I have just included it so you know I am not a complete idiot. Also, since this has taken so long to resolve (has invited people last Sunday and emby is how I watch local channels) I created a new user so I could use it. Please help me. Luke 42265 Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 Quote I don't see reset password anywhere (I have attached a screenshot). It is on the sign in screen, so try signing out and then you'll see it. Please let us know if that helps. Thanks.
SeekingWisdom 1 Posted March 16, 2022 Author Posted March 16, 2022 OK - so I assume you are saying when I log in "to emby"? I never log into emby when I am on the synology server - that is why i didn't know what you were talking about. Must have set some default way back to not require a login So in emby I clicked on the "figure" and selected "log out" (hope this is what you wanted me to do). That presented me with a log in screen that has "forgot password" which I clicked. I then got the following (see attached image) It says I need to look at the file in /var/packages/EmbyServer/var/passwordsreset.txt I then went to "File Station" on the synology server and there is an attached image of the result of doing this: Note that the response to me entering /var is that it does not exist. Now what do I do?
Happy2Play 9814 Posted March 17, 2022 Posted March 17, 2022 @FrostByte@cayarscan you help with this? As for why the User-password screen does not have a reset option, it suggests that is an admin user and will not have a reset option. Only non-admin accounts have a reset button.
SeekingWisdom 1 Posted March 17, 2022 Author Posted March 17, 2022 Thanks for the clarification on the reset. Now I need how to find the file (my last post) so I can get that user working again
SeekingWisdom 1 Posted March 17, 2022 Author Posted March 17, 2022 (edited) Ok I've done some research on this and here is the answer for anyone running emby on a synology server. /var is in a separate system partition that is not accessible via the GUI. You need to log in via SSH to access that folder. Here is a synology article that describes how to do this: https://kb.synology.com/en-global/DSM/tutorial/How_to_login_to_DSM_with_root_permission_via_SSH_Telnet Once you log in (I did on a windows machine using PowerShell in windows as described in the above article) you can then view the file specified by emby. I followed the instructions in the passwordreset.txt file and was able to reset the password. Finally, it is finished and I did gain some wisdom. Thanks to all that offered help. P.S. I would image that many people would have problems finding out that you needed a SSH connection to access that file (i.e. more than a casual user who watch local TV or whatever using Emby). It would sure be nice if there was an easier way to do this! Edited March 17, 2022 by SeekingWisdom
Carlo 4561 Posted March 17, 2022 Posted March 17, 2022 (edited) I updated the "Quick Links" page for Synology in the Knowledge Base with an entry for "Forgot Password (admin account). https://emby.media/support/articles/Synology-NAS.html Edited November 6, 2025 by GrimReaper KB article link updated 2 1
