ive been avoiding 10-bit media because of lack of space and hardware support but ive recently added a some drives and a better videocard, will converting 10 bit media tone-map like it does when transcoding, leave it 10-bit (not convert it), or just make it 8-bit with incorrect colors? not the former, will support be added at some point?

Everything transcodes to 8 bit regardless of source.
If you make sure to have "Enable HDR tone mapping:" enabled in Transcoding menu then anything HDR will get properly tone mapped to SDR for HDR10 type material.
This way is playable on SDR displays.

If you're going to store your files as 10 bit even for none HDR material do some testing first with all your devices and any that remote stream from you to make sure they can play that format.  Not all devices can decode 10 bit files (anything 4K will).

i was referring to conversions, not on the fly transcodes.

just to be clear, and sorry for beating a dead horse, the conversions follow the tone map settings from transcode tab?

secondary question: does that include hardware acceleration?

Generally speaking yes but keep in mind you can adjust how conversions are done so it's not exactly the same as transcoding.

What I would suggest is doing a few tests of converting files to get first hand data of how this will work on your system.
