Riptide126 24 Posted September 16, 2021 Posted September 16, 2021 I am having issues with emby playback on emby theater, and on emby either locally or remotely. I have to turn off allow subtitle extraction on the fly because subtitles just straight up won't show up. In emby theater its even worse if I have allow subtitle extraction on the fly on because for some reason whenever I try and start a show the audio begins playing but the video wont load. I have no idea why this is happening, if you need anymore information from me feel free to ask.
Riptide126 24 Posted September 16, 2021 Author Posted September 16, 2021 Oh also when I do have allow subtitle extraction on the fly disabled it takes FOREVER to load anything, and half the time it won't even load at all
GrimReaper 4744 Posted September 16, 2021 Posted September 16, 2021 Are those AVC Hi10p encodes you're having trouble with? 1
Solution Carlo 4561 Posted September 16, 2021 Solution Posted September 16, 2021 This is optional to use and there is a warning right on the option. "On some systems this can take a long time and cause video playback to stall during the extraction process. Disable this to have embedded subtitles burned in with video transcoding when they are not natively supported by the client device." So if it's not working then you need to turn it off. That's likely going to mean instead of direct playing the media you now have to transcode to burn in the subs. How fast you can transcode is going to depend on factors such as machine hardware, config and of course the type of media. As GrimReaper is pointing out certain codecs types are going to be problematic regardless. In those cases the absolute best thing to do is convert them to a better format. 1
Riptide126 24 Posted September 16, 2021 Author Posted September 16, 2021 The files are 8 bit not 10 at least according to emby, and I know that the warning says it can take longer but its either that or it doesnt work at all
Carlo 4561 Posted September 16, 2021 Posted September 16, 2021 Well right now all we can do is guess without seeing the media info from the media or any logs. Can you post a pic of the media info as shown by Emby at the bottom of the detail screen?
Riptide126 24 Posted September 16, 2021 Author Posted September 16, 2021 embyserver.txt ffmpeg-transcode-616f468f-c043-4406-b3fa-fb998e792fb9_1.txt
Carlo 4561 Posted September 16, 2021 Posted September 16, 2021 I don't see anything in the ffmpeg log file that looks wrong but it was slowing down as it went but still more than fast enough. Could you provide this file for us to use to test with?
Riptide126 24 Posted September 17, 2021 Author Posted September 17, 2021 What would be the best way to share that its too big to share here
Carlo 4561 Posted September 17, 2021 Posted September 17, 2021 You can use a service like google drive or dropbox.

Carlo 4561 Posted September 17, 2021 Posted September 17, 2021 That link requires approval which I requested.

Carlo 4561 Posted September 18, 2021 Posted September 18, 2021 If using web player using "Allow subtitle extraction on the fly" it will direct play. If I disable that option it doesn't change until I restart the server. I restart the server and playback is now Transcoded and plays back fine. In Theater Desktop both play fine in direct play mode. Tested using Synology 920+ NAS running Emby Server 4.7.0.11 and Emby Theater and Web on my notebook. Are you testing these running the client on a different computer than the server?
Riptide126 24 Posted September 18, 2021 Author Posted September 18, 2021 So I was trying to play it on my phone, and roku tv and it was either taking forever to load if allow subtitle extraction on the fly was disabled or it wasnt playing subtitles if it was enabled. The log I gave u was from i believe me trying to play it on my iphone
Carlo 4561 Posted September 18, 2021 Posted September 18, 2021 If allow subtitle extraction of the fly is slow on your system you will just want to leave it off and burn the subs in which will cause a transcode. But this file should transcode easily on anything semi-modern as my NAS only has a Celeron in it with QuickSync and it's fast starting. With QuickSync (HW) turned off it's about 2 seconds starting as it's slower in software.
