How to move folders/content correctly? (+external metadata files)

Hello!

I am having problem. I have folder of content that has metadata which I added myself for each file, metadata is saved as external metadata file, so theres in folder videos + metadata file.

1. When I move this folder somewhere else it loads those videos to emby, but it doesn't add those metadata files. 2. When I choose "refresh the metadata" it just replaces those already existing metadata files with empty information so I lose all the actors etc I added.

Could anyone help I don't understand. :(

Metadata and images that are not saved with media will be lost when you move media as they are removed from the database and re-added.

If customizing anything on media you should save with media to maintain this customization.  Otherwise you would need to make manual database changes updating the moved media.

so is there any way easily to move folder with it's contents without losing metadata?

If you are not saving nfo and images with media, no.  You would have to shutdown Emby, move media, open the database and manually update path and image columns in order to maintain your customized database only metadata.

Folder I am moving has:
Videos
.nfo files (for each video)

only thing nfo files has is actors pretty much so no images

If you have nfo with media then all customized metadata is recorded there, images are separate from metadata.

If not saved with media images are saved in /metadata/library/xx/xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx folder and recorded in the database Images column, and when you move that media that item is removed from the database so that image path folder gets deleted, the item gets added back to the database with a new /metadata/library entry.  So if you want to maintain any centralized stored images you have to manually update the database for all the moved media.

I am sorry, but I think I didn't understand. Can we ignore the images part? as I don't use any custom images for videos (emby generated images are fine)

I only want that when I move folder that it would still have actors I added into metadata.

If you have a nfo file with the media then you should have all that information and it is maintained with a move.  Unless you do not have a true metadata nfo file.

Emby will always read nfo metadata (unless disabled per library).

But to avoid more confusion can you go over a specific example.

Thank you for help! My bad. I had "metadata reader" toggle off. I was 100% sure it was on as have looked these options so  many times now, but turned it on and it reads local nfo files and works! 😬
