Don't confuse two different and unrelated things. Emby controls and changes the BITRATE, not the transfer rate. Yes - The bandwidth AUTO detection feature in Emby has always been broken. It's SUPPOSED to detect the available bandwidth between the server and client to set the BITRATE limit for a better streaming experience. But it doesn't work and falls back to a hardcoded value that more often than not is too low and causes unneeded transcoding and server overhead. Bandwidth and transfer rate - This is infrastructure and the Emby client and server are just nodes on the network. The Emby server does not manage or control or even care about this when it sends data to a client. Regardless of the media streaming bitrate value the Emby server sends segments/packets to the client as fast as the network allows. A 10mbps and a 40mbps stream get sent to a client at network speed, not at the bitrate, and as many segments/packets as the client wants are sent as fast as they can go. On a fast network the client playback buffer stays topped off. But on a slow or unstable network with changing bandwidth and if stream bitrate is close or above what's available you can end up with an empty buffer (underruns). Pauses and hiccups. The better solution for these cases is to lower the BITRATE or increase the bandwidth. As I understand it some client platforms don't allow control of the playback buffer, but I don't know which do or don't.2 points

I think it is a bad idea to have all 3 providers listed here for Episode Metadata You have opted for the TheMovieDB only for the season metadata, so I would suggest you just have that for Episode metadata as mixing metadata from different sources could be potential for issues You can see here that the Movie Database has US Airing Dates by default for Paw Patrol But the default for thetvdb which is what is used by Emby is not the US Airing Dates thetvdb has this for US Airing Date which we would not be using - I will add a note in the Naming Standards article about this2 points

It would be helpful if the developers stated whether or not they plan to fix this issue with nested folders, which is a concern for many of us and has complicated our lives. In my case, I've reverted to version 4.8, but I'd like to know if it will be the last version I can use with nested folders.2 points

Just wanted to add a +1 to this, it's made navigating seasons in shows worse, I lost my season artwork display when I jump into a show, and it's made navigating more kludgy. The entire UI in web, android, lg app, only used to use drop downs for setting and filters. having drop downs for every season sucks, and I'm not happy with the UI change, and no ability to customize it back to the old way. If I had an option, I wouldn't be posting.2 points

Hi, I would love to have tautulli or equivalent for emby. Especially for people coming from plex, we would love to see something like tautulli. I know there are a few Statistic plugins but i think we all know there is nothing like tautulli out there. I love the way i see people currently watching movies on my server and the details of what is transcoding etc. i know emby also shows ppl watching movies but it isn't the same. I don't get a notification or even see a icon if someone starts to play while i have the emby page open. There is no icon that shows me someone is watching a movie. Tautulli is also open source so if someone has the skills in python to make it work for emby, this would be amazing. For me this is actually really the only reason I hesitate to switch completely. maybe someone can make this happen1 point

It is really cool that Emby has the ability to support multiple versions of the same movie. It would be nice to have a setting on the client side to allow the user to set which version should be selected by default. This could be as simple a user-entered string, or it could be a list of detected strings to choose from. It could allow multiple entries and it would choose them in the order entered. On the Kodi side, it would also be nice to get the "Choose the Best Version for Me" option that the Emby app has.1 point

Old thread necro, but it seems like my real problem was emby not picking up changes happening to the media files. This was because I didn't have func.getattr=newest in my fstab entry. I haven't had a single file refuse to play/transcode since I added it. I just wanted to add this for anyone else finding this thread from searching.1 point

at least utilize any existing db tagging in the meta, even if you do not add a pre-play analyse, that would be acceptable.1 point

Ah, in the case of the music files, yes the titles do have more than one, thank you. For the Hey Arnold! entries I realized that this was a copy of my library before I fixed it, so nevermind all good now. And the Ramen Akaneko episode does have 4 titles with 3 slashes. So in my case, no issues found.1 point

i have been using emby for android for several weeks now, but last night i moved back to emby for android tv. i could not quite put my finger on it, and i tried settings around refresh rate, but something was off on the regular android app. when i reinstalled the android tv version, the slight video lag went away. i also appreciated that the android tv version had audible navigation cues which seems like a small thing, but really do make the experience better. everything is also sized better in the android tv version from the size of objects, size of subtitles, etc. yes, i did try to change from medium to small etc, but the ratios are just better in the android tv version. i am curious if the android tv app is still getting updates in the future? i can live with the odd folder nav/views in the android tv app, but hope that the app has not been sunsetted. is emby for android tv still being updated?1 point

I Agree with your comment in general, but AUTO settings on clients is not - not related, it cant be. Especially when all clients defaults and come installed on AUTO settings. Image only how many less forum post would be if AUTO settings is working as it should be .-)1 point

@sa2000 can you update this wiki page. Emby Connect | Emby Documentation And add the importance of local password even when using Emby Connect. Admin think its secure to NOT use password on local user accounts when using Emby Connect. And this is insane that the documentation does not mention this. Edit. Also since Emby DOES NOT enforce a password policy this makes unknowing Admin wide open to attacks.1 point

embyserver (2).txtffmpeg-remux-78ee5b8b-72af-4100-afdf-68749e22f5cf_1.txt You will find the log files in the attachment. I accessed the films or series via the LG TV. However, the error also occurred when I tried to access them via the browser or the Android app. The error had nothing to do with subtitles. Yes, there is a folder in the following path: /share/CE_CACHEDEV1_DATA/.qpkg/EmbyServer/programdata/metadata/SubtitleFonts Since the ‘Trailers’ plugin was removed, there have been no more errors.1 point

Thanks for the database and the updated nfo for Paw Patrol S01E39-E40 There are inconsistencies in the data in the nfo which appear to relate to thetvdb changes to introduce "US Airing Order". So at some point the metadata had the episode titles based on the "US Airing Order" rather than the default "Aired Order". Whilst the title and original title are now based on the Aired Order, the sortname field still has the US Airing Order title. Not sure what we update on refreshes and it is possible some fields are not. thetvdb has these titles for the different airing date orders AirDate Order: E39 - Pups and the Beanstalk E40 - Pups save the turbots US Airing Date order: E39 - Pups Save the Easter Egg Hunt E40 - Pups and The Lighthouse Boogie Your nfo has the following now E39 <title>Pups Save the Easter Egg Hunt</title> <originaltitle>Pups and the Beanstalk / Pups Save the Turbots </originaltitle> <sorttitle>Pups Save the Easter Egg Hunt, Pups and the Lighthouse Boogie</sorttitle> <imdbid>tt3461700</imdbid> <tvdbid>4856019</tvdbid> <uniqueid type="tvdb">4856019</uniqueid> <uniqueid type="imdb">tt3461700</uniqueid> <episode>39</episode> <season>1</season> <aired>2014-04-13</aired> E40 <title>Pups and the Lighthouse Boogie</title> <originaltitle>Pups and the Beanstalk / Pups Save the Turbots </originaltitle> <sorttitle>Pups Save the Easter Egg Hunt, Pups and the Lighthouse Boogie</sorttitle> <episode>40</episode> <season>1</season> <aired>2014-04-13</aired> Maybe the safest option is to move the files out of the current library paths, scan the library and then bring the files back I thought maybe the issue / cause is to do with switching back and forth between "US Airing Order" and "Aired Order" but looking at the other media files with issues - the "How I Met Your Mother" series does not have a different aired order - so that blows that idea. Looking at your database, the following are shows and seasons that need to be corrected I have not been able to see a pattern to allow me to try and reproduce. The issue appears to be mostly with the originaltitle field. All my attempts so far have not reproduced the issue. This gives you the multi-episode files that have the issue in addition to Paw Patrol E39-E40 Looking at this list, do you know what might have been common to cause the problem?1 point

From my observation it will pick the highest bitrate video it can direct play or that the device advertises support for. Without the mediainfo for each file, but assuming same size audio track, the 1x66 version is the largest file, so it must have the highest bitrate (albeit not by much more). I think the order ends up being the same as file sizes but I pretty much only have 2 versions max so I'm not sure without testing.1 point

A client side, configurable buffer would be a very useful tool for how I have Emby set up. Some consideration for this would be appreciated, and thank you for listening. all the best,1 point

Many would say the same about Emby instead of their DVD collection. It's a question about "taste" i guess. I would bet any one not wanting it is safe as all AI companies harvest data like their life depended on it and Emby has stated they will never do that. I would actually think a feature like it would be fun and useful to some as long as it could be done without using the big companies. If it did get implemented i bet it would have an on/off button.1 point

I guess to a point there should be no auto select for multi-version and a pop-up should happen to force user to select/choose a version. For most that multi-version that is not the case as each version would be different usually per resolution, but the client decides as not all clients are created equal.1 point

I can only agree. After the umpteenth time Emby again just cleared the actively playing queue after my tablet locked for just a few minutes. One that I was creating and listening to with a view to saving as a playlist. Just gone! This issue alone is making me question my lifetime Emby premiere subscription and I'm looking for alternatives. Its not fit for purpose for playing music on my tablet which is my primary device.1 point

Hi, the reason we removed all those graphics is because a lot of these chromecast devices don’t handle it very well. What ends up happening is you press play and if the graphics are still loading it can cause playback to take a long time to start or sometimes even not start at all.1 point

The latest information I have is that they're hoping to launch support for installable apps in March and that we'll be one of the first. Until then it will require rolling up your sleeves a little to get the debian package installed.1 point

The percentage slider means before a list with all episodes is fed into the randomizer, that episodes of all tv shows are repeated until the percentage of the tv show with highest number of episodes. So in your example, the tv show with only 10 episodes is repeated 5 times to reach 50 episodes, which is 50 percent of the show with the highest number - 100. The show with 50 episodes already fulfills that condition. I hope that makes sense!1 point

Hi, This has been talked about a lot on the Apple TV forums, but there is no formal request for it. So I do it here, please add support for MKV HEVC HDR playback using Apple TV (without tone mapping). I don't care what technique you use. Either adding HLS fPM4 support to the server or improving the MPV player. I anticipate that I am not satisfied with you saying that Apple TV does not support that, since most players on the market support it. Thanks1 point

Is there plans on the roadmap for OpenID. I have searched but not found any indication this is in development. With many admins taking up SSO through Authelia or Authentik to enhance security it would be great for Emby to support it. One of the easier open standards is OpenID which the aforementioned support. Users could continue to use LDAP if they wish while others can use the arguably better SSO experience.1 point

This post has strayed significantly from the original topic. The initial question concerned client-side buffering in Emby to mitigate network jitter and hiccups. I experience buffering issues due to my poor ISP connection, while my friends, with better ISPs, stream smoothly. Even though I host my Emby server on a Google Cloud Platform virtual machine with a 10 Gbps connection and have a 100 Mbps home internet connection, I still encounter buffering problems with my 1080p direct-play streams (no transcoding). Regarding those suggesting transcoding, why couldn't Emby transcode an extra 10 seconds and send it to the client as a buffer? I own the media, so there's no piracy concern with retaining a larger transcoded buffer. Jellyfin, a fork of Emby, supports large buffers, resulting in smooth playback even on my unreliable internet connection. However, Jellyfin didn't undergo a complete backend rewrite or utilize fundamentally different streaming technology, so I believe Emby should be capable of similar functionality.1 point

Thanks for providing another perspective @frankw. Unfortunately the Emby devs for whatever reason don't value or recognize this as an issue enough to expose the buffer time property to us. There should be no debate over the validity of the problem - Large amounts of latency alongside some occasional bandwidth spikes ruin the buffer time they've set. It's obvious and clear.1 point
