Welcome back to our Emby Community Spotlight series where we showcase real users and the powerful, creative, and often surprising ways they use Emby across different environments. In this edition, we’re featuring everything from a professionally calibrated home theater server to a budget friendly setup that just works. Whether you're building a server in your basement or streaming from a single-board computer, there's something to learn from each one of these users. 1. Modular, Scalable, and Always Moving Forward This user built their Emby setup with future expansion in mind, combining Unraid with Docker-based services, remote access capabilities, and a clean, efficient hardware layout. Motherboard: ASRock B550 Extreme4 CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X RAM: 32GB GPU: NVIDIA Quadro P620 (for transcoding) Storage: 250GB SSD for Docker containers and VMs 4.5TB SSD media cache pool 4x12TB HDD array (36TB usable) HBA: LSI 9211-8i Chassis: Inter-Tech 4U-4410 Power: Corsair RM750i PSU Remote Access: Sipeed NanoKVM PCIe OS: Unraid Clients include a NVIDIA Shield TV for local playback, Emby for PC, Infuse for mobile, and Chromecast for travel. GrimReaper, Thank you, the problem is now solved! I (painfully) followed the password reset process and eventually managed to log back in as Admin. This then enabled the menu optiopns I was missing, and I now have access to the server setup menus. This was all a bit wierd, as Emby told me I was logged in to the Admin account, but it behaved as if it was in user access mode. I guess logging out allowed it to sort out the issue by locking me out! Anyway, problem solved. Thanks again! Kevin2 points

I'm suprised nobody responded to this yet. I thought this was a pretty sought-after request. My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined2 points

@@Luke stated in a previous post (https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/49933-replaygain-music-support/) adding support for this could easily be done for at least the theater client seeing as the player used already supports replaygain. I'm making this feature request in hopes that this support is added, as I have no dev experience myself1 point

ability to be able to add a collection into another collection. ie: Spiderman Collection into a SuperHero Collection. like i could with mediabrowser with shortcuts. TIA1 point

Since there is no option to do this within Emby the only way I can think of is to use Task Scheduler and create a triggered task to stop Emby. User: admin Event: boot-up (Shutdown may also work as I don't believe packages which were stopped at shutdown will auto start at bootup) Enabled Run Command: sudo synopkg stop EmbyServer Then you can use package center to manually run Emby when needed.1 point

What @Neminemsaid: If you're on Windows you can take a look a "Total Commander" which is/was a rather popular tool. I prefer using powershell and just renaming files like so: // current directory ( Get-ChildItem -File -Recurse ) | Rename-Item -NewName {$_.Name -replace 'Goosebumps S([\d]+)E([\d]+) (.*)', 'Top Gear (2002) - s$1e$2 - $3'} // specified directory Get-ChildItem -Path "C:\Media\Shows\Top Gear\Season 02" -File -Recurse | Rename-Item -NewName {$_.Name -replace 'Top Gear S([\d]+)E([\d]+) (.*)', 'Top Gear (2002) - s$1e$2 - $3'} Very useful for formatting an entire season from bulk. I've manually (or via a command as above) edited all my files to be either formatted as: Movies X:\Media\Movies\Titantic (1997)\Titantic (1997).mkv X:\Media\Movies\Titantic (1997)\Titantic (1997).de.srt X:\Media\Movies\Titantic (1997)\Titantic (1997).en.srt X:\Media\Movies\Titantic (1997)\Titantic (1997).en.sdh.srt ... Movies (multi version) X:\Media\Movies\Titantic (1997)\HD\Titantic (1997) - 1080p.mkv X:\Media\Movies\Titantic (1997)\HD\Titantic (1997) - 1080p.en.srt X:\Media\Movies\Titantic (1997)\UHD\Titantic (1997) - 4K.mkv X:\Media\Movies\Titantic (1997)\UHD\Titantic (1997) - 4K.en.srt Shows X:\Media\Shows\Top Gear (2002)\Season 01\Top Gear (2002) - s01e01 - The Legacy Begins.mkv X:\Media\Shows\Top Gear (2002)\Season 01\Top Gear (2002) - s01e01 - The Legacy Begins.de.srt X:\Media\Shows\Top Gear (2002)\Season 01\Top Gear (2002) - s01e01 - The Legacy Begins.en.srt ... X:\Media\Shows\Top Gear (2002)\Season 02\Top Gear (2002) - s02e01 - Nissan Sunny vs. Jet Engine.mkv X:\Media\Shows\Top Gear (2002)\Season 02\Top Gear (2002) - s02e01 - Nissan Sunny vs. Jet Engine.de.srt X:\Media\Shows\Top Gear (2002)\Season 02\Top Gear (2002) - s02e01 - Nissan Sunny vs. Jet Engine.en.srt ... Shows (multi version) X:\Media\Shows\Top Gear (2002)\Season 01\UHD\Top Gear (2002) - s01e01 - The Legacy Begins - 4K.mkv X:\Media\Shows\Top Gear (2002)\Season 01\HD\Top Gear (2002) - s01e01 - The Legacy Begins - 1080p.mkv Books (adding the year doesn't work for ebooks yet ) X:\Media\Books\The Great Explosion (1963)\The Great Explosion.epub The above formatting also works with ANY OTHER media server. Plex, Jellyfin, they all support and even prefer this format. I find having multiple version in different folders and separating them all exactly the same to manage the library very easy, albeit a little more work.1 point

Then that would point to something with her network connection or router. Cell network : OK wifi / wired network : not Have you rebotted her router ? If you already have tried rebooting router, it would suggest something I the router is not setup right. ISP blocking ? are you using the default ports 8086 8096 and 8092 8920?1 point

hey, thanks for the replies. The source box in question is one of those Linux based satellite receivers with a HD Homerun plugin installed which is set to the 'Favourites' list so that Emby will only pick up those channels. I had another look this morning and much to my horror, the two channels I mentioned were NOT added to the favourites list. I did just that, rebooted the box to be sure and re-added it as my source in Emby and it's picked up the channels just fine so I'm the idiot1 point

@Luke I could be wrong, but as long as you don't add an image as a background it would just default to what it is now. Right Luke?1 point

Emby is great, really great. However, the download function is really lacking a lot of love and attention. Every time I have to use it, it's a pain. Here's some thoughts and feedback, but don't take it the wrong way, I appreciate all the effort put into Emby, else I wouldn't have bought into it No size on device for downloaded items. No info on whether it was encoded or not. "Ready to download" with no option other than cancel. No force start? No restart? No ETA for downloads, no progress bar, no speed indicator, no total size for remaining/queued downloads. A pause button would be great too, or option to pause download while streaming. When initiating download of an item, no info is show. Would be nice with file size and remaining free space on download target. Also, when choosing a lower bitrate, an estimate of the encoded filesize would be extremely helpful. Convert progress on server is sometimes extremely slow, in the order of several days for one movie, even though there are hardware encoders (4K HDR seems troublesome). Convert media in server management show no info whatsoever. Nothing about why, what, who, how etc. Nothing. No ETA either. Which hardware encoder being used would also be nice. Downloads are not shown in server management. Neither are queued encodes for download. Would be nice so you can see if downloads are done soon so you can reboot. "Manage downloads" is a big mix of movies and TV show episodes, hence a pain to locate a single movie or episode you want to delete. No sort function, no added dates, no file sizes.. Nothing. Downloads can't be removed from the download folder, you have to go to "manage downloads" and find it on the non-sorted list of hundreds of items. Download queue can't be reorganized or changed. Want to prioritize one over others? Can't. I hope at least some of the observations can be implemented. Thank you for reading this far on my semi-rant1 point

The new version (Version 4.01) is up on Github. Added: Added support for Aspect Ratios. Added button to enable and disable the plugins logging. Changed: Made the detection dynamic so formats, resolution and so on is no longer hardcoded. Fixed: The plugin no longer redraws all posters after a server reset - If you have changed your media files between server shutdowns and some icons are stale or missing then use the "Clear icons cache" button in the settings. (For people who tested the beta, this was not finished when i uploaded that so is not part of the beta.) Note: The dynamic change sadly made it so new icon names has to be used. Like vc.h264.png for the video codec format, please read the readme and/or look at the IconExamples for a look at the naming scheme. It is NOT backwards compatible with the old names! Download here or on Github EmbyIcons Icons with the new names are included in the zip file here, if you still have questions then don't hesitate to ask me. EmbyIcons.zip1 point

Emby expects each movie to be in a folder with the movie's name (and preferably date); the folder name is then what is looked up in the metadata databases (not generally the file name). Paul1 point

I could maybe look into making it so people could choose on a grid where the icons should be. Problem is i have no idea how to make that, will make it a side project. Many thanks for testing everybody! Nice to hear it works!1 point

So I spun up a brand new Ubuntu 24.04.2 VM and did a fresh install of Emby 4.8.11.0, using the same files from the same folder/location as in my real Emby install connected via NFSv4 and mounted in the new VM. No other changes have been made; this is a barebones default installation of Emby 4.8.11.0 created specifically for this test with one single administrator user with full permissions to the files/folders on the network share as well as full access rights to the items in the library. I set up and configured this new instance of Emby and configured my Movies library with each of the Movies folders from my network share. Once Emby finished scanning the library and adding all the files, I was able to see all 3 versions of Godzilla Minus One listed separately in the library, as expected. I multi-selected the items in the library and manually grouped them. All 3 items are selectable from the dropdown, as expected: Then, I added the parental control filter for the tag, like I have in my real Emby environment: Going back to check the entry in the library, I now only see 2 of the items as listed in the dropdown: With the parental controls still applied, if I scroll down the page and split the versions apart, I once again see all 3 different versions listed separately in the library. Since this is a test VM, I updated to the latest 4.9.1.7 BETA of Emby and conducted the same test. This time, after re-applying the parental control filtering, I am thankfully still able to see all three versions listed in the dropdown after grouping the items. So, it appears that whatever is causing my issue in 4.8.11.0 with the movie grouping and parental control filtering is fixed in 4.9.1.7 BETA, at least with a barebones base install. Once 4.9 is actually released I will have to see if I still have this issue in my real Emby installation. I still don't know what is causing the problem, or how to go about fixing it, but at least "wait until 4.9 comes out and upgrade" is a valid solution to the problem for me.1 point

Todays News: Hisense promises up to 8 years of Vidaa updates for TVs https://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?subaction=showfull&id=1752649864 Hisense's Vidaa platform currently powers more than 30 million Smart TVs across over 400 brands, including Hisense and Toshiba, according to the company.1 point

I guess I am the only person who used these and the old "see all button" in TV mode.1 point

Any strategic news on Emby being available on VIDAA app store? The app store has nearly all apps, including Plex, but no Emby. VIDAA is also used on UK Freely TVs (Terrestrial IPTV to eventually replace aerial and DSAT) from Toshiba and other manufacturers so not just HiSense.1 point

I switched to Navidrome. I put a lot of effort into tagging my music, Navdirome picks up on metadata changes almost instantly. I use Symfonium as a client and the rest is history. I'm not dissing Emby and still use it for video, and, its worth the money. But like mentioned, the corporate style one line answer to a feature request from 2017 is laughable at this stage. We not asking for nrw construction of pyramids or reinvention of the wheel. I will add one extra postive note to Symfonium, the dev actually listens to the community and has implemented tons of feature requests. Thats something I can truly support going forward.1 point

I have about 20 family members using my server. Managing passwords for them has always been a nightmare as they like most people do not know how to use password managers properly. When they forget their password there is a Forgot Password option on the Emby Login screen. But after they enter their user name they are told to do this: The following file has been created on your server and contains instructions on how to proceed: /config/passwordreset.txt I must have something configured incorrectly because this clearly doesn't help a user reset their password? Just for fun I went to my server and looked for this file and found it. It told me to: http://172.17.0.14:8096/web/index.html#!/startup/forgotpasswordpin.html Enter the following pin code: 2870 The pin code will expire at Saturday, January 11, 2025 12:01 PM For whatever reason that I haven't looked into yet, this doesn't resolve. But am I supposed to pick this file up and somehow get it to the user? Something doesn't seem configured correctly here? But I return to the first point. How do I configure this correctly so that a user who cannot remember their password is given a Forgot Password option that actually works? Thanks.1 point

Hi! I noticed in the "More Like This" section, I see in one of my folders where I have placed general videos I have come across (not tv series or movies - random youtube stuff), that one of the suggestions was an R rated movie *blush* and when I click on the 3 dots to see if I can remove that suggestion, there isn't any way to do it - from what I can tell. This would be bad if I had young kids and didn't want Emby to suggest to them to watch a porn video or something LOL. Any thing I can do to eliminate that suggestion? Or better yet, any way that emby could ignore that complete library (R rated movies) altogether?1 point
