Getting back to the original question (slightly rephrased): Q: Will JF catch up with Emby within the next few years? A: No, they won't! To explain that, let's look at some figures ( source ) They were already a fuill year behind Emby right when they started You can see the gap between 2018 and 2019. This exists because Emby had switched to closed source at the end of 2017 and we didn't work on the the public code anymore. When they forked, the code that they got was already a year behind of Emby's then-actual code base. Contributors and Commit Counts The largest amount of commits in their code is still from Luke. He made 13.5k commits.. There were at least 500 commits from others before they forked, so it's 14k commits at the time of forking. Meanwhile they're at 26k commits, which means they've added 12k commits. But they are using a different workflow: Everything is going through pull requests, while Luke's commits were made directly on the repo. When using PRs, there's always an additional merge commit added. The means from the 12k commits were only 6k actual commits. The totals: Emby made 14k commits in 5 years (2.8k/year) JF made 6k commits in 7 years (0.85k/year) => Emby's progress is 3x the speed of JF Yes, that's measured against the early phase of Emby Server. I used it, because you can verify those figures as that's all public (I also checked against figures from the same time span and we were still more than 2x faster since the fork) Trend of Activity Just look at the diagram over the years (above). There has been a lot of activity at the start, but since 2021 activity is constantly decreasing and got very small in 2023 and 2024. The following Emby figures are very different and show constant work: Code Files of the Server JF: 1,726 CS files Emby: 3,749 CS files (the already developed parts of TVnext will add another 1k CS files soon) Conclusion None of those metrics alone is a perfect indicator, but when viewing it altogether and with the averaging over such long periods, the assessment is crystal clear: JS is far behind Emby and the distance is constantly increasing. Of course they can develop a specific client app. That doesn't mean anything though. We have developed more than a dozen of client apps and some of theirs are still our old ones essentially - all of which we have further developed and evolved - which they didn't do (for all), just one or the other specific ones. So the answer to the question is very clear: They won't catch up anytime soon, because they are years behind! PS: That doesn't mean that they cannot do one or the other thing better than Emby. That's easy and always possible and there can be many reasons for why Emby doesn't have it or just not yet or does it differently. But a few cherries don't make a tree..4 points

Right now, you have a choice, as does everyone; and as always different people will have specific priorities leading to the choice they make. All you're doing is complaining that there isn't a fourth choice: Emby, but free or at least much cheaper. Tough - but your choice between the available options remains unconstrained. Paul3 points

Hi first thanks for Emby, I move from Plex here but im in trouble about the lake of 2FA security. When do you think @Luke this request of 2FA will be completed ? We realy need it please... Have a nice day2 points
-
I can hardly believe that (not them saying it, I mean them doing that), because it would create a precedence for other codecs which have according patents. If we were paying for everything with applicable patents, there was no Emby and there was no Plex - at least not at that price. What's especially despicable regarding AC-4 is that Dolby managed to push it as a mandatory audio codec into the ATSC3.0 spec, even though there was absolutely no need for that from the technical side (at least the spec could have required a stereo audio stream with AC-3 or AAC). Dolby is known for acting quite aggresively at times, writing intimidating letters and making appearances with a bunch of lawyers, but they also seem to avoid negative publicity - or maybe don't want to risk loosing any lawsuites, because if they would loose a lawsuit against a small company then it could also have the effect that their really big player customers might cancel their contracts.2 points

I think it would be nice to have the Audience Rating (icon) / Audience Score for movies along with the Critic Rating (icon) / Critic Score. It looks like the data is available from the Rotten Tomatoes API via the ratings field. 14 "ratings": { 15 "critics_rating": "Certified Fresh", 16 "critics_score": 99, 17 "audience_rating": "Upright", 18 "audience_score": 911 point

Similar to this old post, I'm suggesting a tab that would be titled Watchlist and could be placed in between Suggestions and Favorites. The functionality would pretty much be a copy of Favorites, just with a + symbol added next to the heart and other symbols that let you favorite a movie etc. The previous post had mentioned extra functionality such as automatically removing a movie from Watchlist after it has been watched. This would be nice, but is unnecessary because after watching a movie you can simply click the + symbol a second time to remove it from Watchlist. I would imagine this would be very easy to implement as a rebranded copy of Favorites. Adding other features could come later. Edit: added link to old post1 point

I know this is easier said than done, but could the Apple TV app for Emby get updated so it’s like the Emby app on the Fire Stick. It's specifically lacking the option to see when the movie will end while you’re playing the movie. You also can’t see the cast of the movie while playing the movie like you can with the Fire Stick. There are other options missing but those are the most important two that I think would be very beneficial.1 point

@roberthleeii Have you seen "Antenna Man" on youtube? He has done quite a few videos that cover your questions in detail. It might be worth looking up his channel. Also beware of the ATSC 3.0 NextGen DRM Encryption that is looming over most of us... The last I have seen is our HDHomeRun boxes cannot receive those encrypted stations (YET) but its still possible in a future firmware update if the controlling party for ATSC 3.0 "grants approval" for HDHomeRun devices (its a proprietary protocol).1 point

This sounds like a different issue. I'd check Settings > Library to see if the libraries are visible there. If they are visible, you can delete them there (hover over the library, click the three dot menu). If they aren't visible, I would start a new thread. Be sure to include more information and screenshots.1 point

Not being an immediate cut puts my mind at ease and i'm not at the limit, for now at least. In the end, my point is just how the limit might be a little unfortunate as how one person can easily use up a lot of device uses and maybe a better business model can be found/made. Keeping in mind the software is not made for mass broadcasting use ofc. Anyway, keep up the good work!1 point

Have you ever hit the device limit actually?1 point

The new Android TV app is the worst app I've tried in years, a web design slapped onto a TV that works worse than the old Android TV version. It's not that you've gotten better, you're going backwards... The original app works perfectly and was adapted to what it's like to control the interface with a remote control, but you've decided to use the web interface because that way you only have to adapt one thing and it's replicated on all devices. That is not and will never be the solution because it is not the same to use the app with your hand, a remote control or a mouse. As for the fact that it always works... there are many bugs that have been reported in the forums thousands of times. Downloads are a mess, they don't work well and they don't do what a user wants. Transcoding for no apparent reason is more common than usual, the device is compatible, but Emby decides to transcode because "the bitrate is not enough", but then you go to settings, turn off auto and set 4K 120 and nothing happens. It has been requested thousands of times in the forums to allow limiting transcoding by quality, since transcoding a 4K makes no sense. (We've been dealing with this for 4 years and it still hasn't been implemented). I could go on listing things that Luke has been saying "soon" for years and never arrive...1 point

I that case you need to ask the 1 who gave you access. Emby does not know. See here about how Emby works. Quick Start1 point

The growing buzz around Jellyfin suggests that it's rapidly catching up to Emby and is poised to surpass it in the near future. Emby's Android app is essentially a web wrapper with a built-in player that, frankly, is quite lower to the native Android TV version. The pricing model for Emby's standalone apps (some paid, some not) makes no sense. It doesn't make sense to pay for the Android TV app while not paying for the LG, Samsung, or TvOS versions. The device limit, with no clear indication of which devices are active and which are not, and the lack of an unlimited version are also drawbacks. Jellyfin's Android TV app is on track to far surpass Emby's, as they've completely rewritten the playback code and will adapt the interface sooner or later. Switfin, the native iOS app for Jellyfin, is still in its polishing phase, but it looks native and functional. It's just a matter of time before they implement new features and refine it. Emby needs to make a radical change of course, not just with its apps (we don't want an app with a web design) but also with its absurd licensing model that charges for one thing and not another or limits clients without knowing who or what is limited.1 point

Hi Luke, Yes I figured it out. If you use fat format this works as chmod doesn't. Just replace your information below in fstab after setting up samba mount: UUID=****** /mnt/diskname vfat uid=username,gid=username,nofail,noatime,umask=0000 0 0 The important point is the unmask=0000 which gives rwx to all users and groups. Now I can access and upload my movies to the disk and emby writes metadata to it. Hope this helps and if there is a better way do let us know.1 point

The "line" setting means the dynamic range is left alone. There will be very quiet scenes and very loud scenes. You might have to adjust volume to hear the quiet scene then be blown out of the room by the loud scenes. The "RF" setting compresses the dynamic range. So the very quiet scenes and very loud scenes are normalized. You won't have to adjust the volume knob or be blow out of the room. But it might not sound the same as the theater. Slightly duller.1 point

From the Technical Side You may remember that those DV files still play - just with false colors. What's missing was the knowledge how to do that transformation in order to get the proper output colors. A guy has figured it out and added to libplacebo, which drives MPV player graphics. Later it has been added to ffmpeg. The problem is that it uses Vulkan hardware acceleration and that's something we're not using currently. Interoperation between hw contexts is error-prone and unpredictable and when doing everything with Vulkan, then other transocding operation wouldn't be possible and it would severely affect reliability in transcoding. I haven't followed their threads, but I would bet on the following: When you read a little bit further than just the headline, telling that it can do DV tone mapping, then you will find many caveates and conditions under only which this is working there. This is something for fiddlers, but we try to provide features in a solid, reliable and predictable way. It would be easy to get this working in Emby for a specific case, then we could raise the hand and say "yes, we got that feature", even though it wouldn't work for most of you and cause issues for those where it's working.1 point

hello i would like to know if theres any way (or plugin) to add "news" so the users can see it on the front page, or at least custom notification. Example of usage : i fixed a subtitles that was wrong and i want to let users know it was fixed. Also, one more question, is it possible to add a "report a problem" on each movie playing? So users can report if theres an audio/subtitle problem on a title? I use emby for my family and we are not all in the same house, so this features could be great to avoid "whatsapp spam" xD Thanks1 point

A lot of times i want to give updates to kids. Even having a scrolling message. Tell them about their fav movies or series or tell them about a movie they must watch or DONT BE LATE FOR SUNDAY BRUNCH OR ILL SEND MOM AFTER YOU! since all my kids are grown now. This is something I do to keep us all close still for the most part. I have so many apps to keep in touch with kids. skype for video calls on computer, snapchat for cellphones, sometimes we even do movie days. where at the same exact time we all watch the same movie lol its great i love my kids1 point

We're paying professional software developers to write code for us. Most of them are not going to want user support in forums and social media added to their job responsibility. There are dedicated staff for different types of roles, and it is best to allow everyone to focus on doing what they do best. In fact, some of them move so quickly that we actually have cases of new features that are temporarily hidden because they are waiting on me to go in and review and then make it available for you all for testing.1 point

Are you talking about an MOTD type message that everyone can read upon login in or starting the app? If so then I would like to see something like that too.1 point

@@ebr So, it turned out that the IP field needs to be in the format https://host.domain.net and the https:// is not optional. This is departure from the Android app and Emby Theater logins which do not require this format (i.e. they both work with only host.domain.net). It seems like a simple oversight, but I expected Emby's login experience to be consistent across all devices. Unfortunately, this turns out to not be the case. Prior to discovering this, I actually went out and purchased an Amazon Fire and Roku to see if it was her device specifically causing the issue. As I was testing the Roku, I realized you cannot clear the port (or at least I couldn't figure a way to) which prevented me from logging in. I have a couple of other users who have Roku's so I'm not sure what to tell them to get it working again. Emby connect is inconsistent and was not working on her Firestick (she could login and see everything, but playback would result in each video stopping before playback). The whole point of moving to a DDNS is to make it easier on the end user without necessitating additional work and having to remember another password/login and port. Since switching over to a reverse proxy based SSL I've had really nothing but problems with Emby. First the above login experience discrepancy, then the Roku porting issue (is there a workaround aside from connect?) and now I am experiencing random video artifacts over web based video playback. This only occurs over the web browser (not via the other apps), it seems to happen during fast motion scenes, only occurs for a couple of frames, and seems to happen in roughly the same spot each time. I was able to capture the following screenshot from a movie where it occurred. This can happen dozens of times over the course of a movie. Again, this occurs in all movies over web playback via nginx's SSL reverse proxy, but not via Android, Firestick, or Theater.1 point

If you have 7 siblings with partners and every second one has a child, that makes 1 + 7 + 7 + 3 = 18 persons. 240 / 18 = 13.3 per person, so that makes $1.10 per person per month. That doesn't sound like a steep pricing to me.0 points
