Best practices? 1. Enable TLS/HTTPS 2. Use a reverse proxy if you can and know how to do it. If you don't know how look into Caddy and use a reverse proxy. 3. Force all users to have passwords. 4. Don't allow remote access for Admin accounts. If you do then make sure the passwords are strong. 5. Don't show users on the remote login page. 6. Don't show admin users on any login page. 7. Don't use the name Admin for your main admin user.4 points

Yes but have now decided that for the very small number of users that still use it - it is not worth my time. Refactoring the code is a huge job. My time is better spent 'adding' features to the Core that everybody can use. Yep - some of these features will come back as supplements/plugins to the core - that way, both work in harmony as opposed to the current Plugin which uses a brute force way of writing it's data to 'work' with the core feature set.2 points

Please do not try to roll this all into a single one size fits all solution. Emby can do much better. I would suggest (insist?) that two separate types of library interfaces are needed: Audio books and Radio Series (or audio drama, podcast, Audio show.. whatever you want to call it). That is currently how I have my libraries set up. Books have authors and Narators, a Radio Series has a cast/crew. Audio Books have series and collections, Radio Series have Seasons and episodes, often with different images (podcasts can have different images per chapter). Audio Books need bookmarks and chapter navigation, Radio Series need next up and play next episode. Navigation, metadata, and playback for both should be optimized to their expected listening behavior. As noted elsewhere, MusicBrainz has metadata hierarchies for both different sets (I know, there are better sources for Audiobook metadata - which is part of my point). I suggest Chyron should continue his crusade to bring a better solution for Audio Books which are clearly his passion, but there needs to be new feature requests and momentum behind building a Radio Series/Podcast library as a separate effort.2 points

@Abobader Did you ever manage to talk to @Lukeabout having a 'security' section in the forum ? Info such as the above would be perfect as a sticky to give people up to date guidance on what is the recommended minimum acceptable level of 'security best practice' in 2024. We could have sub-sections for Reverse Proxy questions - nginx, caddy, IIS etc etc For general security questions - we can then just redirect users to that forum section if they have not found it themselves ...2 points

Have you configured RTM on both and are you telling both to put images/NFO files next to the media? If so, the servers are seeing those changes take place and then refreshing, and they keep changing so they're both seeing the changes and fighting to be the last to update.2 points

This is another good point... If the Tags summary page was divided into Emby-defined Tag Groups (somewhat similar to the individual Genres page layout now), then it would be possible to add more specific tag categories, without the need to add them to the top Music menu, for easy access. The existing catch-all Tag category could become "General" Tags and there would then be the potential for as many extra Tag categories as required, over time. The main Tags page could show, e.g.: General Tags Styles New Category 1 New Category 2 Then, the next level down would show (e.g.) the Styles summary page. All these newly defined Tag categories could then subsequently be listed as sub-sections under the About section at the bottom of the relevant pages, similarly to how Tags is now (as mentioned in a previous post). Then, there would be much less need to use the existing Genres and Tags in non-ideal ways to gain more tag-like categories.2 points

As requested for years elsewhere in these forums, the ability to download a usable playlist (the audio files and a modified m3u or whatever that points to those downloaded files where they now reside on the device) is what's needed to make the download function fully useful. I hope that's actually going to happen soon, please. Even without that functionality, using Emby via Android Auto doesn't make the "dowloaded" files directly accessible from the main Emby dashboard screen, which diminishes the benefit of downloading before a road trip to avoid heavy wireless data usage and/or dead zones. Please add "Downloaded files" as a main-screen selection button, in addition to "Recents," "Favorites," etc.1 point

Be able to create playlist based on a certain criteria, like genre and or year, in order to create a dynamic playlist that it refreshes automatically when new content is added. This way you can for example, create a tv comedy playlist from the 90's, or a new sci-fi Movies playlist. Some other criteria for rules could be the rating, watched/unwantched, score, tags, language, audio codec, etc The possibilities could be endless1 point

Pretty simple suggestion. I have multiple users for my Emby server. If I want to do continuous maintenance on the media, I have to tell everyone. some of them are harder to reach than others ( i.e. no Facebook or Skype chat etc. ) It would be great if say... on the admin panel, I could hit a check box that enables 'maintenance mode', where the server still runs does everything as normal, but instead of the login screen it displays a maintenance page saying the server is unavailable. Even better if I were able to directly put a reason in a text box that would then display on the login screen as well. Not really sure what others would think of this, but for me it would be quite helpful. mostly if I want to make sure no one is trying to access content I know won't work until I've done a full library scan again. Thanks for reading. -Kyle1 point

Did this topic get resolved? I hadn't played with recording and so wasn't aware I was experiencing this same thing. and .. I did a quick search and found this, but there seemed not resolution here. So fiddling for a few seconds, I just resolved it for myself. I am using Emby in a container, and in my docker-compose file I set a host path to /recordings in my container. In the Emby config I have a Library "Recordings" - Mixed content /recordings and.. this was resulting in recordings being made. And the showed up on the main screen under the Library view. BUT.. in the Live TV menu, recordings was empty. I looked in the setup, Server->Live TV->Advanced and the Default recording folder setting was blank. I clicked the dropdown and only /recordings appeared. So I chose it. {Save} Then looked, and Boom! content shows on my Firestick and Webpage on the Live TV -> Recordings menu. So I set it back to blank by closing the blank row in the dropdown, and sure enough, no content showed again. So yeah, set it to the good value. So this is a bit interesting, but barely worth my continued attention as I resolved it in minutes.. it seems that the recording side of the Emby brain knew where to put new recordings, maybe because there was only one mixed content library named Recordings, and since the main page just shows libraries, the content was viewable, but the menu bar on Live TV looks specifically for the setting value. Fail to actually set it, and the menu choices shows blank. I don't know if that was the issue for others that experience this, there you go.1 point

i set up abs on my server and set up port forwarding and caddy as a reverse proxy to get https remote access. i added about 200 books in mp3 mpa and m4p formats to test with. i travel 35 to 45 min twice a day so this gives me a good chance to test. i used the web client on my google phone to listen to 2 books over the last week or so, i usually listen at x1.5 speed. so far the experience has been very good, the web client has remembered by playback positions and speed settings between play sessions and the display of books on the phone has been easy to use. the playback controls in the web client on the phone could be a little bigger but i manage. the playback experience has been at least as good as the stand alone phone app audio book player i was using in the past. plus the fact i have all my books available and manageable in a central place available on multiple devices now is great. so far its been a positive experience.1 point

You don't have to manually clean them up. They already get cleaned up automatically when the jobs complete, so that's probably what needs looking at more than just deleting the files.1 point

Yes definitely want it enabled, only suggested to disable as a test so you can see the difference in workload. Throttling enabled should be more spikey and disabled it should go full tilt until it's done. I would also agree that it's unlikely that you'd have 10 streams going at a time, but being a power user I like to know the limits of my hardware. I have a 1080 Ti for transcoding and can transcode I think 3 or 4 4K streams at the same time before it starts to be a problem. Also you can force it to transcode all streams if you have the diagnostics plugin installed, can enable the option "Force transcoding", or you could disable hardware acceleration in your browser and that might prevent a direct play. I've found Chrome can generally direct play even HEVC files if you have hardware acceleration enabled. Still haven't figured out why sometimes it supports direct playing 5.1 audio streams and other times it needs to transcode to MP3 though... But audio transcodes like that are very very little CPU overhead compared to transcoding video.1 point

But again, that's like a podcast. An audiobook, or even an audio drama, generally have the same narrators or voice actors throughout. They're not the same thing.1 point

For audiobooks? The description is usually the book synopsis. There are not normally unique published synopses for each chapter. I have hundreds of audiobooks (purchased from Audible) and, having decrypted all of them to m4b/mp3 myself, they all do this. Individual chapters don't have unique descriptions. Separate chapters or tracks might all include embedded artwork, but it's the exact same embedded artwork. Even an omnibus of multiple books still includes the omnibus cover for all chapters/tracks. If I want multiple covers, I would have to split the omnibus into multiple books.1 point

If you're going to add a certificate for https, you'll need a domain name anyway (https pretty much requires it). There's very little security in not giving out an IP address; they get scanned all the time in any case. To my mind Connect is just an added complication - but for some people it seems to work. You could, I suppose, ask your family/friends if they want to make a login at Emby just to access your server (there's no technical advantage - unlike Plex, the data never goes through Emby's servers). HI, check both the conversions and also the downloads section in the server setup. I would start there before just deleting the folders, because they may end up getting recreated if you still have jobs open.1 point

Yes there a couple plugins that will do this when backing out of an item. All plugins with item links. Reports Statistics as mentioned playback reporting @GrimReapercan you move to Plugins as I believe this is a plugin issue not a server issue as the plugins themselves are not reloading the page when backing out of a item.1 point

Tested this again but unfortunately it's still not refreshing the list after I delete a video file. Please let me know if there's anything else you need to help troubleshoot. EDIT: Never mind, it appears to be refreshing after a few minutes, which is sufficient enough. Thanks for your hard work in implementing this fix!1 point

So after some testing I can also confirm the same issue as everyone else and the original endpoint that I have in my script doesn't delete them from the filesystem, just from emby.1 point

The Emby team wanted to say thank you again to everyone that took the time to ask various questions during our Q&A session. Here are a few more answers to questions that a lot of our users were asking about. 1) How is beta functionality success measured? Often times people are curious about the process we use internally here at Emby as we go through the Beta process. We do rely heavily on the forum feedback and beta-tester feedback relating to open issues. It is also important that we take into account the overall experience of the beta release compared to the current stable release, especially when we are making large changes as we did from 4.7 to 4.8. We may be perfectionists at heart but we also understand that we can't spend forever chasing perfection on the release so we do our best to balance stability and functionality throughout the whole process. To reiterate what we shared in previous blog posts, we also understand that a tighter release window with smaller goals allows us to hone in on the stability of the beta and get releases out to the public. It is something that we here at Emby are striving to get to. 2) What is the split of time between actual development and forum duties? We get this question asked often so we thought we would give a little run down on this. Some of our developers such as @Lukeand @ebrand others split their time between development and the forums as things demand. Other developers we have on staff actually do not even engage in the forums at all as to solely focus on the development of Emby moving forward. This allows us to offer quick and prompt customer service and also focus on development at the same time. We thought it was important to answer this one at this point in time, because we do want people to know that there is more to the development team than simply what you see here on the forums. 3) What would help the Emby team the most to improve the overall product from the community? This is another question that gets asked often and it's something that a lot of you are already doing. Keep up the feedback! The more the better! Everything that's posted on these forums is invaluable to us. From pain points, feature requests, how you're using the server, what apps you prefer and anything else that people share with us about how they utilize Emby. Everything that you share is heard and taken into account by the developers. That doesn't always mean that things can get implemented right away or worked on immediately, but the value of your feedback is paramount to our work. We know that it doesn't always seem like it to everyone, but we 100% listen to everything people say and value the thoughts and opinions of our user base! 4) What are some of the biggest obstacles that the Emby team faces throughout development? A lot of the challenges we face throughout development are based on resource allocation from the sheer amount of hardware and software options that Emby runs on. Keeping in mind that Emby runs on everything from an old windows laptop, to Linux distros, NAS, server systems and more, we have to make sure that the program works on all of these systems. Also development of the apps falls under that same category. With so many options for our users to choose from dedicated media players such as Roku, Amazon Fire Sticks, Nvidia Shields, Apple TV Smart TV's, mobile devices such as Android and iOS, there are a lot of different platforms that we need to develop on and do our best to make sure everything is up to the standard that our users expect from Emby. Okay, so... in Now Playing in Emby, if I have a single-file m4b, the only way I can know what chapter I'm on is to mouseover the seek bar at the location where I'm at in the book. And that is only on the seek bar on this particular screen. Can I just take the time to again point out how much screen real estate is wasted here (below) by redundant cover art and descriptions? Also, the description shows for the track(s), not the album. I don't know how else to point out how rough this UI is. Creating feature requests to solve each individual problem with it would be a fool's errand at this point.1 point

Yes testing this the Swagger api_key works but the generated api via UI does not. Only change to curl command was api key generated via UI and one via Swagger session. curl -X DELETE "http://localhost:8091/emby/Items?Ids={itemid}&api_key={apikey}" -d ""1 point

I complain a lot, but truthfully I'm exasperated as I've been asking the Emby devs for audiobook support since October 2017, which is four years before Audiobookshelf ever existed. So when a dev here says "Why do you think it doesn't work well?" that just hits home how they never used it for that before. Making separate feature requests for individual improvements at this stage is like picking what color paint to use on a house with no electrical wiring or plumbing. Sure, it works as a shelter but it doesn't have the necessary amenities. If the person building it never actually uses it enough to notice what's missing, there's no way they can know what people who do use it actually want. Plain and simple, audiobook functionality on Emby is ugly and barebones for a lot of reasons, and it won't improve until the devs actually use it to listen to audiobooks. Meanwhile:1 point
-
I think the fact that the Emby dev team does not listen to audiobooks means the dev team does not understand what would be best to improve the experience. Having embedded chapters in a horizontal row is not useful or intuitive; having the ability to reorder audiobook tracks, which is pointless, leads to accidents. Among other things. Chapters should be shown in a single vertical list, whether they be from embedded m4b chapters or separate tracks There should not be separate artwork thumbnails for each chapter. It wastes space. Metadata scrapers should pull from book or audiobook sources, not from themoviedb There should be a feature to set bookmarks There should be customizable FF/RWD buttons that let you skip forward or back by 15 or so seconds There should be an ability to adjust the playback speed If you used Emby for audiobooks, you could intuit for yourself why it doesn't work well and why the experience is barebones at best.1 point

Here is the next round of answers from our Emby Q&A session. The feedback from our previous blog post was exciting to see from all of you, and we are excited to share even more answers. The next round of questions and answers will be released next week as well! 1) What are some of the future goals of Emby? Emby wants to continue to grow and be the best media server option available for our users. We hope to move to a quicker release schedule than in previous iterations that is both more efficient from a development standpoint and exciting for our users. We love what we do here at Emby and we want our users and potential users to see that! 2) Would the Emby team ever consider moniterary "bounties" to help offset the development cost. We have actually seen this question a lot lately. We do not believe that this is the best way to decide what goes into development for a few reasons. First and foremost, we do not want people who have more money than others to decide what goes into production while others who may not be able to afford to donate or contribute go unheard. 3) How does the Emby team decide on what's next for Emby? The answer to this is deeper than most people probably think. Feature requests is one place that we look at to form our roadmap of future goals. Sometimes it's as simple as user feedback that something is not working as intended or could be implemented in an easier way to use etc. Other times our development staff has ideas based on industry trends as well as their own experience that they believe should be implemented. We take all of that and as a team decide what should be added and when. 4) In what areas can Emby improve? We as a team are always seeking to improve. We fully acknowledge that as a small company we are sometimes stretched "thin" but we do our best to always be both proactive and reactive with all of you. As mentioned above we hope to move to a quicker release schedule with a more agile methodology that allows us do so. We think we do a pretty great job at communication with everyone here on the forums, but we continue to strive to be even better here as well. Being able to give more flushed out answers and as much information as we can. Our goal is to always continue improving. View the full article1 point

Hi Guys, I recently moved from Kodi with MySQL for lack of proper multi user management and server side support, I have to say I'm impressed with Emby. Together with the Kodi Plugin it really takes the solution to a whole new level, count me in among the supporters! One feature I would like to see is the ability to recommend movies or shows to other users: I share my Library with close friends and family but it is a big library so they are always calling me to recommend them a movie to watch. It would be really cool if after watching a movie I can click a Recommend button and choose the users I think would like the movie, then it is displayed on their suggested movies at the top with the name of the user who recommended it... Sorry if there is something like this is already there, I am new to the interface and don't fully know it but could not find such feature... Thanks!1 point
