I took my wife and 4 step kids to the light show at the zoo. Normally I go do something for a couple hours and then pick them up. Last night we got there early so there was easy parking so I decided to just sit there. Made a phone call then had nothing to do and then I realized I had emby on my phone. Next thing you know my phone was cradled hands free in the bottom of my truck's steering wheel and I was watching movies on emby. The time passed quickly and I enjoyed the movie. I realize this is one of the things emby is for but it is not something I thought I would never use as I'd rather cuddle up on the couch, lay in bed, or sit in my comfy chair in my office and watch a movie, and it was definietely cool sitting there realizing all the technology we have at our disposal. Being old it still amazed me. I used to carry multiple large boxes of cassette tapes in my car for my personal music and now I can either stream over 100K songs from my emby server or use the 20K+ that reside on my phone.....but to watch a movie from home that I recorded off TCM while sitting in a parking lot downtown was quite the leap from those old days. Kids don't realize how spoiled they are LOL.....but they are having their creativity stolen and their brains turned to oatmeal, but that is a different topic. I just wanted to thank and wish a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all those that work hard at emby to give us all this great product that has totally transformed my life and how I think about and use my huge media collection.6 points

Pretty simple suggestion. I have multiple users for my Emby server. If I want to do continuous maintenance on the media, I have to tell everyone. some of them are harder to reach than others ( i.e. no Facebook or Skype chat etc. ) It would be great if say... on the admin panel, I could hit a check box that enables 'maintenance mode', where the server still runs does everything as normal, but instead of the login screen it displays a maintenance page saying the server is unavailable. Even better if I were able to directly put a reason in a text box that would then display on the login screen as well. Not really sure what others would think of this, but for me it would be quite helpful. mostly if I want to make sure no one is trying to access content I know won't work until I've done a full library scan again. Thanks for reading. -Kyle1 point

I am switching over from a Win7 box running MBC to Chromecast dongles. With the Win7 box I had a HDMI to Cat6 setup that allowed me to stream to up to 4 displays/TVs simultaneously. It was great while it lasted, but involved stapling cables to the ceiling to run it from room to room - plus it has borked Can there be an option to multi-cast to several receivers at once? i.e. simultaneously play to Chromecast dongles in my office and living room and kitchen simultaneously so i can walk from room to room without stopping and restarting the movie or show all the time? I realize that bandwidth could POTENTIALLY be an issue, but i have a fill gigabit network and a multi-port NAS so that really is the least of my worries... Thank you!1 point

CURRENT STATUS: SSO: Not yet planned LDAP: Development COMPLETED - BETA AVAILABLE >180 direct endorsements >30 MONTHS (>2.5 years) >12,000 views PLEASE BUMP - - - - - PLEASE LIKE - - - - - PLEASE BUMP - - - - - PLEASE LIKE - - - - - PLEASE BUMP This would greatly expand Emby's usage, and possibly more enterprise level adoption, user templating, user groups, SSO, etc. There are also users who have completely abandoned Emby and ended subscriptions due to the lack of this necessary basic functionality. Note: SAML2 is also part of this request. (header auth is also acceptable, at a minimum.) Context: I am trying to use something like openfire as a Instant Messaging solution which already supports LDAP and SAML2. So this would allow the current user of emby to seamlessly use web-based instant messenger with the same username and password as Emby without the need to enter them into a form. This would also allow universal login to be shared with my home PC's, Spiceworks, Ombii, Organizr, etc. The multitude of possible flexible functionality this could add is truly incredible. THIS NEEDS TO BE DONE, myself and others cannot manage a userbase with proprietary passwords for a single service (with no self-service password reset/recovery), when things that have only months of development implement it within days, easily. Status: LDAP - Development Completed - BETA AVAILABLE! Common LDAP solutions to test against:Open LDAP (Open Source) [use this] ApacheDS OpenDJ 389 Directory Server Microsoft Active Directory SSL is NOT actually needed, but Emby team insisted on it anyways: Simply offering a toggle option for auth to send plaintext or encrypted passwords would work just fine. It is ironic to claim the need to be overly security conscious of user passwords, while lagging behind on basic SSL. If SAML is implemented, a SAML request/response can just be signed by an x509 and it is just as secure as TLS using SSL. SSL does not need to be natively supported, as it is perfectly possible to run it through an SSL reverse proxy tunnel and have the same effect. SSL Feature Request: https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/33983-ssl-integrationsupport/&do=findComment&comment=322526As of now username and password is encrypted client-side as security as SSL is not natively implemented. Emby team has said this impedes the adoption of both SSO and LDAP. Please see our SSL request topic; like, comment, and endorse it to show how many people would enjoy/gain from this basic security. Ways to satisfy this FR: Direct LDAP connector SAML2 connector General SSO functionality (SSO Header, etc) Allowing user header auth NGINX auth support RADIUS Authentication Other features that are inherently possible if this is implemented: Self service passwords Ability for users to invite users/guests Expiring Accounts (after duration/trigger) Unified credentials for many services Corporate level authentication security User groups Mass User management Update 1: I encourage others to work on this but I am currently seeing what I can do to develop a solution to this myself. If you have experience in this LDAP/SSO/SAML2/SSL/.NET contact myself, @@Luke, @@ebr or the Emby team to let them know, any help is greatly appreciated! By everyone! Update 2: I know there is always the question of "well how many users actually want/will use this", so I compiled a list of some of the other threads/sites where people request this (to apparently no effectiveness in motivating the team). Update 3 (18 MONTH UPDATE): This request has now hit 18 months in age, NO progress made thus far whatsoever. ( ) Update 4: This FR is now the 4th most liked post ON THE ENTIRE FORUM and the 3rd most liked FR ON THE ENTIRE FORUM (ever), the 1st most liked active FR ON THE ENTIRE FORUM and over 4000 views. Counting endorsements besides those on this thread show over 115 direct requests/endorsements for this basic functionality. Lets get this moving guys, this is getting to be a bit much. Almost 2 years waiting on this now. Source Update 5 (9/20/2017): This feature request is now the MOST DESIRED REQUEST EVER MADE TO EMBY, sadly, that has not merited any progress at all. The staff has been working on things they believe Emby users want or may want, but it is clear what people want. We can only hope now our wishes are respected instead of being told what we want and having our requests dismissed. Source Update 6 [2 year update] (10/17/2017): Two years and not a single bit of progress has been made. TWO YEARS!!! To say this is disappointing is an understatement. The entire reason I went from Plex to Emby was because of local user management. THIS IS THE ONLY REASON, so naturally I wanted to have complete control over my users, but after TWO YEARS, still nothing. Update 7 (3/6/2018): DEVELOPMENT HAS STARTED!!! Check Luke's recent comments, if you want to test it out, download the latest beta and install/configure the LDAP plugin to test and give feedback!!! Update 8 (4/6/2018): Development on the LDAP connector has completed from what I gather, not sure if this is only a beta or a primary release; SSO is still a plan for the future but has not been touched. Progress made by other users (looks to be nearly, if not fully complete): https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Emby/pull/1885 https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Emby/pull/2139 Exploits shown by other users against Emby (emphasizing the need for a centralized authentication solution): https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/12335-unauthenticated-access-over-the-internet-to-logs-folder/ https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/20376-all-folders-visible-to-all-users-after-upgrade/ Related FR that could be helpful: https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/46635-support-for-logging-users-in-though-url-scheme/?hl=user Any of these could be interesting to have compatibility with: http://lemonldap-ng.org/welcome/ https://github.com/Jasig/cas http://passportjs.org/ https://www.nginx.com/resources/admin-guide/restricting-access-auth-request/ LDAP/SSO/SAML Requests (~180 endorsements) [>12,000 views] > 95 endorsements on this post ~ 30 endorsementshttps://github.com/MediaBrowser/Emby/issues/1146 > 35 endorsementshttps://www.bountysource.com/issues/24943821-authenticate-users-using-ldap > 14 endorsementshttps://feathub.com/tidusjar/Ombi/+122 > 4 endorsementshttps://www.reddit.com/r/emby/comments/5o44wd/creating_deleting_updating_users_with_the_api/ Interview, in article comments user said lack of LDAP STOPPED him from using Emby (Emby is actually losing customers due to the lack of this NECESSARY basic functionality):https://www.linux.com/news/software/multimedia/856128-exclusive-interview-emby-founder-luke-pulverenti Duplicate, user had no progress on first 2 posts (no one from Emby actually tracked this or even replied to him):http://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/861-mb3-and-active-directory/ http://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/867-mb3-and-active-directory/ Auth announcement, user 'Drashna' in comments requested LDAP/ADhttp://emby.media/community/index.php?/blog/1/entry-177-manage-your-home-with-emby-users/ Various similar requestshttps://github.com/MediaBrowser/Emby/issues/2494 https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Emby/issues/2493 https://forum.yunohost.org/t/integration-emby/912 http://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/13081-active-directory-integration/ http://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/11200-media-browser-3-server-ldap-active-directory/ External SQL auth request:http://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/27986-emby-and-shared-mysql-database/ http://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/23509-authenticate-users-via-external-mysql-database/ http://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/12001-external-login-to-mysql/ #ADFS #SSO #LDAP #ActiveDirectory #MSAD #SAML #SAML2.0 #SAML1.1 #PingFederate #OKTA #LemonLDAP #JASIG #authentication #auth #TLS #SSL #Usergroup #usertemplate #header #authheader #headerauth #security #hardening #authhardening #authenticationheader #externalauth #centralauth #centralizedauth #centralizeddb #exploit #authexploit #security #loginhardening #authenticationhardening #accesscontrol #.NET #SelfService #RADIUS1 point

When transcoding or direct streaming it currently throttles but it doesn't cleanup during playback so you can have a situation where your using lots of space. Can we have a custom setting to remove the transcoded parts minus 5 minutes of current playback? This would help it large libraries where there are multiple transcodes going on.1 point

this makes literally no sense with the topic at hand in the context of lifetime vs monthly options for additional devices as they are still selling the option. There are no additional controls here. People who are actually using the product as intended won't want to spend monthly to up their device limit while people selling access can easily afford it - its just 1 user out of many covering it and becomes part of the cost of selling access. just call it what it really is: a cash grab1 point

1. Go to this link https://github.com/TOomaAh/emby_exporter_go/releases/tag/v1.0.8 2. Download the version that corresponds to your operating system (in your case, Windows: emby_exporter_go_1.0.8_windows_amd64.tar.gz if it's a 64-bit Windows). 3. There's a system for geolocating ip addresses. Either you disable it (I'll come back to this later) or you must: a. Go to this site: https://www.maxmind.com/en/home b. Create an account (it's a well-known, trusted site that doesn't send out newsletters) c. Download the GeoLite2 City database d. Unzip it e. Move the file with the .mmdb extension next to the executable. f. Rename the .mmdb file to "geoip.mmdb" 4. Next to the executable, create a "config.yml" file 5. Use this template and write it to the config.yml file (Indentation must be respected): server: url: "http://<ip|domain name>" port: 8096 token: "your token" userID: "your userID" options: # optional geoip: true # optional : default false 6. Replace the requested information with your own. (for the token it's in the token section in the emby parameters) for the userId: https://github.com/TOomaAh/emby_exporter_go?tab=readme-ov-file#how-to-get-your-userid Then open a cmd/powershell and run the executable from it1 point

I decided that since I did not have a static ip on the server, but the rouuter had already set upnp rules for a previous test set up That I would set the server to that ip address. Things just worked. I did not even have to add the "remote server" as a separate server. Thank you so much for your help.1 point

Hey sorry that wasn't listed upfront. It was the Library Scan, Metadata Scan, and LiveTV refresh. After looking through some other threads after posting this, it seemed most users had issues due to random plugins, so I stripped my server of any plugins that seemed relatively janky and all seems fixed now. I'll reopen the thread if it picks back up! Thanks Luke!1 point

You dont have to remove the guides, just update the lineup. So if it was your direct TV guide that is now blank in the lineup just re-select DITV in your list and your channels will re-map to the new guide.1 point

No this is not supported and generally not recommended (due to major changes to the database) Starting with a clean stable install would be best bet if you don't have a backup to restore.1 point

Have you explored Stats For Nerds to find out what is the reason for transcoding? You can also post here ffmpeg log created for one of those sessions. Also, what is your in-app streaming bandwidth set to (Settings>Playback tab)? If it's Auto, try setting some fixed value high enough that it covers all item bitrates.1 point

That's very odd, because I have 2nd Gen Firesticks in my house, and only the 3rd Gen (for which I have one) is giving me the issue. Let me generate a log file from 2nd Gen and 3rd Gen Firestick from the same server and same video file, and share tomorrow.1 point

Hi, for some reason your top level 'movies' folder has different permissions to the subfolders. 'admin' vs 'nobody' In UnRAID, the default is 'nobody' ...and the PUID and PGID of this account are used as the defaults for docker containers (you do not need a local Emby account, docker handles this): What do you have set on your Emby docker settings for these? (Show more settings...) It's probably being blocked by the 'admin' account having a different PUID than 99 (nobody) You can check this with: root@unraid:# cat /etc/passwd .. nobody:x:99:100:nobody:/:/bin/false .. Admin will show as a different value You could try installing 'Fix Common Problems' from the UnRAID Community Apps store, it comes with a tool called 'New Docker Safe Perms' (not to be confused with the standard "New Permissions" tool which could mess up your dockers as it touches /appdata -- don't run that one) ^ not sure if this will fix the ownership, or just the permissions ...but worth a shot. Let us know how you go.1 point

I solved the problem. I had to disable remote connections on the Emby server and then remove and re-add the server in the Emby for Kodi Next Gen settings. Now the addon only tries to establish a connection locally. So the error was due to my incorrect Emby server settings. Sorry!1 point

Got this sussed out, it's caused by the "Fade in on playback start" option in TVTunes 2.0.8. When that option is enabled + 9.x + theme media linked, kodi freezes when theme playback tries to start. This might have nothing to do with emby/E4K, and I'm never planning on thinking about it again, so don't worry if it doesn't quite make your priority list lol. (The default Fade Out on stop option works normally) Also, 9.1.1 definitely corrects the issue with all libraries not syncing theme media that I saw in 8.2.15, thank you! Going to test 9.x as my daily driver going forward.1 point

This will be in Emby Server 4.8. How it Works: This requires that you enable remembering audio and subtitle track selections. this is enabled by default. The server will first check if you've previously played the video file, just like before, and if it has then it will use your previous track selections If not, then it will look at your last played episode of the same series and attempt to use the same audio and subtitle selections. Essentially it will take the languages of the tracks and put these languages at the front of the language priority list.1 point

Been trying to use the Emby app on macOS as well. Using 14.2 right now. Cannot scroll at all in the actual app. Whatever widget handles the sideways scrolling of the "Latest" sections and "Continue Watching" hijack any mouse scroll events and make the app kinda useless. You have to manually go to the right and drag the bar up and down, which I thought was a problem that we solved a couple of decades ago with, you know, scroll wheels. It's less precise, it's annoying, and the bar itself is so tiny that it can be hard to even find to move it. I don't want to use the browser app for the same reasons as others, and more to the point, I don't want to watch stuff in my browser. Especially considering I use FireFox and have 0 interest in transcoding all of my x265 content. It feels like none of the devs have even really used the macOS app.1 point

I think I might have posted about this in another thread but I'd also like to see some sort of option to have Emby read the subtitles of a movie/TV show and just mute the audio when a swear word is detected. I'm 10,000% OK if the entire sentence is muted even if there's only one swear word in it. As an adult, I'd love for my children to watch Stranger Things with me but after season one, the executives involved in this show caved to pressure from the actors and allowed their characters to start swearing like sailors. I lived through the 80's as a teen and have talked to people that grew up in major cities, and rural areas, during that time and we all say the same thing about that show ......... NONE of us swore like these kids do. It's beyond excessive. Same for HBO's Westworld. I'm so sick and tired of non-stop profanity in shows and movies, especially TV shows. What I've been doing is bringing the files into a video editor and just manually muting audio and deleting entire scenes of some content I consider objectionable. Which leads me to a question that is a bit off topic but, can anyone recommend a Windows/Linux video editor that can _EASILY_ handle MKVs?1 point
-
That's the wrong assumption you are making. When you want to do some math, you must not forget that video processing (same as decoding-to and encoding-from) is done on uncompressed frames: A 4k image has 3840×2160=8,294,400 pixels for simplicity, let's assume BGRA with 4 bytes per pixel, makes 32 MB per video frame. With 30fps, that already makes 960MB per each second of video that might need to be moved around. When it needs to be copied back and forth between GPU and CPU memory, that's already 2GBps. When we would have 5 simultaneous transcodings at 5x speed, this would make 50 GBps. And that is only for one transfer from GPU-to-system memory and back. It doesn't include all the other memory IO that is happening at the same time, so you could end up at an even higher value. All that is everything but "very minor". Granted - it's an extreme example, but I hope it helps to understand the dimensions of these things a bit better.1 point
-
Things are often different than expected with those high-throughput operations. One of my favorite examples that I've mentioned at a number of other occasions is this: "Please help - I have a new powerful GPU for hw acceleration, but now my CPU goes to 100% when transcoding" (the explanation being that the new GPU is transcoding video so fast, that the CPU can't even keep up with audio transcoding)1 point
-
It's a complex subject and I wanted to respond to some other things first and see whether I'd be still in the mood to explain In fact, the recent couples of posts are covering so many things that I'm not quite sure where to start. Let's go for the ramdisk part first: First of all: Sure! We have all learned that we can improve performance of certain processing tasks by things like using SSDs instead of conventional HDs and ultimately even using RAM disks. What are those "certain tasks" that can be accelerated by such measures? => IO-bound tasks, i.e. tasks where the limiting factor is IO throughput Is this actually a problem that we're having with transcoding that we'd need to solve? => No - not at all. Even with the fastest hw accelerations or even when assuming one that would be infinitely fast - the source data needs to come from somewhere. It doesn't come from RAM - it comes from some disk. The output bandwidth when transcoding is usually much smaller than the input, so what comes from some disk storage (network or local) can easily be saved to another disk storage. Are there any reasons at all, why we would want to accelerate disk IO? Now, let's assume an odd case, like 5 transcodings of videos from 5 different source disks, with the results all landing at our single disk with the transcoding-temp folder. Even in that case, we would need an extremely powerful hardware acceleration to saturate the transcoding-temp disk's, IO capacity. And there, we would have each of those 5 transcodings running at a multiple (e.g. 5x or even 50x) of the required transcoding speed (1x). By default, we are running transcodings "as fast as possible". That's not really a good thing, because this will always cause to max out one of the following resources: CPU processing, system memory IO, disk IO, hwa IO or hwa processing - to its limit, even though that wouldn't be required in any way to improve the user experience. It's often a waste of resources - e.g. when a user stops watching after 5 minutes and we have already transcoded the whole video.. To deal with those things and use resources more wisely, we have introduced throttling - just the opposite of "as fast as possible", for all those cases where transcoding is running much faster than needed. Looking at the other end: None of all those cases where transcoding is too slow, can be accelerated by using a RAM disk. Actually, this has just the opposite effect: it can slow down your transcodings instead of accelerating. And not just that: A ramdisk can even negatively affect Emby server operation in general. The problem with the throttling we have is that it is binary - like a refrigerator: there's just ON or OFF switching over time. While it's on, it still runs with maximum speed. Transcoding itself requires a lot of memory IO - all this IO bandwidth will be taken away and not available for regular Emby operation. And now you want to add a ramdisk on top of this, creating even additional memory IO for writing and reading? Very bad idea! The more shoulders on which we can put these things, the better - the right "shoulder" for transcoding temp is a disk. Even when the CPU does the transfer of memory in either case - it's still totally different: RAM is just not optimized for such access patterns. When you use the RAM in this way, you will permanently flush the memory caches (specifically L3) with other data, and this can in turn very badly affect sw filtering operations where the same memory needs to be accessed repeatedly. Edit: And as mentioned, also Emby Server and all other server operations. In Summary With a RAM disk, you would: Either not accelerate anything or at best, accelerate something that is already running much faster than needed Use memory IO bandwidth and CPU cycles (for memcopy) - which are badly needed for other operations Negatively impact overall server operation1 point
-
I'm afraid, but I have to disagree on that whole subject. With regards to using a RAM disk for transcoding-temp, I can only say: Don't ever do this! It's a very very bad idea! You don't even need an SSD for transcoding-temp, but (important!): It should be a local disk - no NAS, no SAN or anything like that. For a perfect setup, you'd have an average magnetic disk - but dedicated only for that single purpose. In a while, I'll come back and explain why.1 point

Discussed in dozens of topics. Emby currently maintains the entire transcode session vs Plex replacing old chunks with new ones, smaller transcode space requirements.1 point
