You could install linux ( the variant you like ) And setup a windows vm, and run that to do your coding in.3 points

I'm not advising you to do any particular thing, but I'm happy with Emby server on Ubuntu. I develop on Ubuntu too, and Visual Studio Code + the dotnet command line are solid and well supported/documented by Microsoft. There is a learning curve, but nothing crazy.3 points

I have toyed with Linux over time and I keep a small computer running Linux at all times and use it for experiments like an alternative server or other things that I want to know how they work with Linux. In all my testing I have yet to find any good reason to move my server from Windows 10 to Linux. (The computer that I use for a server cannot run Windows 11) I guess when Windows 10 gets to EOL I will have to do something but that is a few years away and I may be relieved of having to make a choice. But should there turn out to be a good reason I will move as needed. The main consideration for an OS choice is familiarity. Setting up an Emby server is NOT the time to learn Linux (Or I guess Windows) but I am about equally proficient in both and I cannot choose based on that. Also I do not have any remote users and I allow no remote connections and no one but me ever accesses my server so I am unsure if in the future the vulnerabilities that Win 10 will have matter much. I am currently 75 so I doubt I will live long enough for the choice to matter much in the end. I really do feel old I actually remember Windows 1.1 and UNIX's introduction. For me when I am forced to change I will probably choose Windows. It is just a matter of currently having a well working Emby server running Windows and I believe it will be faster to set up a new Windows server than to build a new Linux server from scratch. so, for me. Windows is the best choice, I think.2 points

Learning. Don't worry I've got my white hat on. But, I do need to move away from the version of windows on my server. Right now I would say that I am not secure... At least from what I have ben learning lately. Definitely, not secure.2 points

I can't help you on the decision making, if would stick with Windows if it was me, more versatility in program compatibility and as you say VS works. I don't think VSCode will stand up to what VS can do. Why don't you use a laptop to mess with on your Linux Journey of knowledge and power. Keep us updated on your journey, i would be very keen to follow it and see if you do or don't adopt and the reasons why.2 points

Agreed been waiting for a few years for this, and I was hoping for a timeline or some working beta to help speed things along. We'll have to see if it comes within this year, or if it ends up coming sometime next year.2 points

It Works!!!!!!!!! Yes!!, I am soooooooo Happy Emby was one of the main reasons I got my headset! Once it connected and I started playing the video I had been using as a test, the play progress bar was counting, but I had a black picture and no sound. I added another video and that one played fine. Attached is the log. Again, thanks Luke! When will this update be available? embyserver (1).txt2 points

whew - reading through this thread is making me feel better about sitting tight and not spending the time to tinker around with Jellyfin (I’m with @Gilgamesh_48on an endless quest to explore new things lol) I’ve been using Emby to repurpose an old skool mac mini server for the last few years and I have to admit it’s fit the bill quite well. I’m particularly super happy how easy and trivial it is to run two instances of Emby at the same time on the same server and have them both startup on boot with proper permissions without having to log in. Tech support has been more than excellent so props up to @Luke! ps. while I don’t consider myself an award winning designer - I do feel I have an appreciation for design and think Emby is great for what it is. I have experienced way worse software and products to nitpick on - Emby has been a fairly polished experience for the most part that I readily recommend it!2 points

Sorry, just saw this part. Will ensure the tvshow.nfo file is written correctly before switching the Nfo reader back on. Thanks again!2 points

Had a bit of time this morning to play... and done Quite a bit more work. I'm almost happy with the home page.. (i'm not a music guy really, more of a DJ, so my dance tracks are well documented, but my other albums are a shower of Sh*T) need to work more on the Music scroller, but this is kind of the look i'm going for. Landing Page for tablet/desktop Suggested Music is a list view that scrolls and returns the latest 30 albums or tracks2 points

I confess I left emby for jellyfin for a few months, but all that did was make me appreciate how well written emby is. Jellyfin is an absolute alpha(beta at best) piece of software - it's a mess. Scanning on jellyfin was a mess. First it scanned too fast and missed things, then it scanned too slow and inaccurately trying to fix that. Not only that, but whenever you did scan, the rest of the app was rendered slow and useless... You couldnt even watch a video. Not to mention the random video stoping out of nowhere. It was nice looking though. While it's in my opinion that emby is one of the ugliest looking pieces of software out there, functionally emby does what they couldn't do effortlessly. It just works. It might not look great, but at least it works.1 point

Without opening to much of a can of worms here. It is finally decision making time for me! I have been using a couple distros of Linux the last couple weeks. I've been learning Kali (which I can honestly say blows my mind), and Ubuntu as well. My laptop has win11 on it, and I have side loaded Kali Live on USB to learn. My server is still running a very old version of windows (I am scared to tell say which one... ). It is time to make a choice! I believe that I am going to install some version of Debian for my server, but I'm not sure which one. What do you think fellow Linux user? And, I'm pretty much sold on installing Kali over my windows 11 install on my laptop. Which might be a good idea. Or, I buy another M.2 and just load Kali purple on it, and keep the window 11 m.2 in a drawer somewhere. The Emby server though??? What distro should I use, if I am going to run Emby? It also means giving up visual studio , and switching to visual studio code for any development in the future. Which may or may not be a good thing.1 point

this used to work. But. I think I might have broken this in a recent change: https://github.com/faush01/plugin.video.embycon/commit/f0dc1fdb91aa4b14f0d1f4a6caafb75330a764b6 I am not sure way I made this change atm, I think it had something to do with adding the user ID the the playback URL to give different users playback save options in Kodi. It was such a weird edge case, that ONLY Kodi and the EmbyCon addon combination supported so I did not think it was worth keeping, I think that was my thought process at the time.1 point

That seemed to work. Sorry didn't see your post right away.1 point

Thanks Luke. How about considering just dropping them? Other lyrics displays that I'm familiar with don't show time values. And if you must know about what time something was in the song, simply look to the lower left of the screen at the time progress bar. Just a suggestion for keeping things clean ... Mark1 point

yep, and as i said it is all over the place when it comes to interpretations of the terms. in the support link above it is stated even if audio is trans-coded that is still directstream, remember when someone mentioned there has been lots of heated debate about this in the past, well i get the feeling there is about to be some more the playback reporting plugin reports what the server did to the data when the media item was played back, it does not try to interpret this in any way, it reports what happened. if the server trans-coded a stream audio or video that is what it reports.1 point

Absolutely correct... What I'm looking for essentially, and not trying to compare products, is this from Plex: In this instance, ALL streams can consume 8 mbps total. If one stream is running at 7.5 mpbs, the next stream gets .5 mbps. It seems to work out pretty well in my use case. It does adjust accordingly in practice. You can limit entire internet upload speed, and an each stream bitrate.1 point

A while back I posted some bash scripts that could be used to rotate a playlist. Those scripts are very crude compared to their current versions so I thought I would post an update. I'm posting this in General because it works with any server type, and could be run from any POSIX install (cygwin maybe?) that supports bash and jq. Anyways, from the README I wrote on it: list_rotate.rar1 point

Big Screen DLNA support with Emby Server is resolved in the Emby DLNA plugin version 1.1.4+. Thanks !1 point

I'm still experiencing the same problem. I'm trying to catch it early so that I can track back the log in xTeVe. However, I believe that the verbose log in xTeVe overwrites the log that I can only see in the web UI. I'll need to double-check to be sure. Thank you for following up. Your support is highly appreciated. This software is the best one I have ever paid for, and I'm delighted to have purchased a lifetime license!1 point

It should look like this: docker run -d -it \ --name=emby_exporter \ -e CONFIG_FILE=config.yml \ -v '/emby_exporter_go/config/config.yml:/config/config.yml' \ bagul/goemby_exporter:latest or: docker run -d -it \ --name=emby_exporter \ -e CONFIG_FILE=file.yml \ -v '/emby_exporter_go/config/config.yml:/config/file.yml' \ bagul/goemby_exporter:latest And you have to check at the location '/emby_exporter_go/config/' on the parent system that the item 'config.yml' or 'file.yml' is a file and not a folder and then fill in the information that looks like this: server: url: "http://<ip|domain name>" port: 8096 token: "your token" userID: "your userID" options: # optional geoip: true # optional : default false1 point

My $0.02 - if you like Kali then pick a stable release of Debian or derived distro for your server. Keep it simple.1 point

Hmm whats you config file name. Here you are looking for config.yml -e CONFIG_FILE=config.yml \ And here your at telling docker to look for file.yml -v '/emby_exporter_go/config/config.yml:/config/file.yml' \ But the file is named config.yml right ?1 point

I do prefer the Android TV one. I find the transport controls much tidier and less busy on the Android app. We watch subs on a lot of things and doing that is definitely more faff on the Android one to the Android TV one, plus it seems to navigate a little smoother.1 point

Update, BGW320-500, If you are using your own network equipment and want to fully manage your own network and you just want to use the ATT router as a media converter (Fiber to copper ethernet) [ATT still has control of the box and you can not get around this]. Simply Go to Firewall and turn off each service, then turn on IP Passthrough. Off - Packet Filter Off - NAT Default Server Off - Firewall Advanced ON - IP Passthrough EMBY, Plex, and all my network items are now happy once again.1 point

ok everything working for me now. problems were (i think) mostly not having the config of cinema intros correct and partly that as far as i can see the ATV app does not support intros for episodes. anyway all good and the hard work is much appreciated Edit - its not to do with the app version. It is to do with intros are not supported when continuing watching a series from the continue watching row. if you initiate playback from the series row or drill down to the episode and play that its fine. but Continue Watching seems to be interpreted the same as Resume and no intro is played1 point

I am trying and testing with different quality settings to see what works. So far, some media has issues while other media do not. I'll give it a go.1 point

Not yet, but it makes sense. At least for studios. The plugin itself doesn't know any genre. It just filters the available genres that are provided by quering the Emby library. There must be some other condition that prevents building your channel.1 point

Hi Everyone, a new release to the Chromecast today has finally fixed the jerky problems I was experiencing. Worth upgrading to see if it resolves yours. STTE.221215.004.A1 only lists two items in the changelog: Android security patch level has been updated to Jan 2023 Other bug fixes and performance improvements I took them some time to release it but at least it's no longer a paper weight.1 point

Hello everyone. My plugins are on hold until release version of 4.8 comes to life… so in tandem with Iridium full Client UI, I’ve started work on this standalone music app also. it makes sense as this will end up as the music element of the main Iridium app. All the infrastructure and base architecture is now completed. Its time to get the content, display it and add the extra features and smart functionality for it.. so keep your eyes peels for sporadic updates here. My intentions are to also include audio books and ebooks into this app, as these are the most likely “on the go” features a traveler would like in an app. look forward to your input, constructive criticisms, UI enhancements and feature requests. cheers1 point

I installed Jellyfin alongside Emby last night (Emby was there first, on Win 11, and exactly the same library of movies and tv shows), and I noticed 3 things that made me decide not to use it, straight away: 1. It took a very long time for JF to scan my library. Emby was much faster. 2. Folder size. Emby's data at "AppData/Roaming/Emby-Server" folder : 548 MB while JF's data at "Jellyfin/Server" - 2.16 GB. That's huge difference! So I looked a bit deeper and found the metadata folder took 2 GB with: Jellyfin/Server/metadata/library - 1.14 GB Jellyfin/Server/metadata/people - 881 MB While Emby's library folder is only 30 MB and people folder only 5.97 MB. I don't know, maybe I miss something here? 3. JF has a bug on its home regarding Latest TV Shows. My "Latest TV Shows" only show 1 item. It turns out that if you add a TV Show with more than 150 episodes (CMIIW), then only that show is displayed in the "Latest TV Shows". The problem exists since 2019 and still not resolved until this day. https://github.com/jellyfin/jellyfin/issues/1880 https://github.com/jellyfin/jellyfin/issues/2711#issuecomment-792580526 For me Emby is the clear winner.1 point

I've been reading through this thread for abit and wanted to add my input. I've used Plex for over a decade, started to have issues with it lately so looked at emby, after some people in the discord which I originally didn't realise was unofficial told me to "use jellyfin it's better" I decided to try both out after a few weeks of trying them both out on different devices I can say emby just works better, jellyfin is fine if you want free software and only use your browser, but it's slow and clunky, the android TV app is a mess and the Dev for that closes bug reports claiming they are intended features. So I have 0 hope of that improving and the mobile android app is also just a buggy mess. Multiple times on jellyfin I've had the apps crash or have playback errors because for some reason the jellyfin server couldn't even encode audio or subtitles, on a 3.6Ghz 32 core server it struggled to encode subs or audio. Or it would just stop playing mid movie or TV show. Not once has any of these issues happened to me on emby, yes it's closed source, yes it's not free, but why are people so against paying Devs for their time? I wonder if those same people are against paying any other employee for their time and think everyone should just work for free. @Cheesegeezermakes a really awesome plugin which I must admit I love as it gives my home theatre a more cinema esq vibe. And if jellyfin being a fork of emby is what emby was like years ago, then I think the Devs have came a really long way and made a lot of improvements over the years, and they deserve to be rewarded/paid for that, so well done to them for both the work they've done and having the guts to say enough is enough and making there code closed source and making some money from their hard work Oh and to the guy who originally made this thread, thanks you really pulled everyone together but your definitely not an award winning designer and from a purely marketing perspective (now I only work in marketing I'm not claiming to be some super awesome award winning marketer because I'm not) your "improvements" to the look of emby from what I can see in your screenshots are outdated and horrible. From a marketing point of view the reason why rounded edges and glossy highlights are used in most products today (idk if it's the same reason emby picked them) is because they give a subconscious feeling of class and elegance. Look at everything we have today, cars have curves, phones have curves, everything has curves, you don't look at a box and go wow that's elegant do you? The shape of objects and designs have a subconscious impact on how we view that product and can ultimately help us form a subconscious opinion of whether we will like said product or not before we've even used it, this is the same for colours, fonts and everything else. But as an "award winning designer" I'm sure you allready know that.1 point

Agreed and this has been stated that the plugin will be available until 4.8.1 becomes a stable release.1 point

Adding libraries to Emby server is a little different under DSM 7 in that setting permissions for the shared folders has changed some. If you've ever tried to add a library to Emby and it wouldn't accept, then the permissions might be wrong 1. Give emby read/write permissions to the shared folder Open Control Panel...Shared Folder in DSM on your NAS Select your shared folder...Edit... and then under the Permissions tab select the dropdown box and change it to "System internal user" Check Read/Write next to the user 'emby' and then click Save 2. Add libraries in Emby server Settings...Library...New Library Select the library type and enter library folder information Example:1 point

I mean.... I'm glad the emby team listens to our suggestions and approval/disapproval of the way emby looks rather than thinking they just know how it should look.. I mean a professional interior designer designed this room.... and I'm sure someone will like it..... I'm not just going to say oh you are the professional Ill learn to like it. lol Even in design there is not a one size fits all. But its good to hear from the other side..1 point
-
and i think this is why emby has failed at web app design, because designers here see mobile and tv apps as the same thing as web app design.1 point
-
Can you actually give examples of what it is that you do not like about the appearance of Emby? Otherwise there's no way to improve on it. Personally I think it looks great on my ShieldTV's in the AndroidTV app.1 point
