  1. Just install it. You can go from any release to a future release; but you shouldn't in general go the other way, as changes in the database will not be understood by older versions, and so things break. Paul

  2. I decided to re-configure my DDNS to something else and set up the reverse proxy to operate on a subdomain instead. It came through as not secure initially so I replaced the cert with one that allowed for a wildcard for subdomains in front of my DDNS domain. It all seems to be working, and generally makes sense to me. Hopefully I did it right. I learned a lot, thanks for the help all!

  3. I certainly agree that audio and video are more important than ebooks, given that audio and video are what Emby is all about. That said, audio and video work perfectly for me and for many users, so if I were the project manager my thought would be that this is a good time to give a little love to other functionality. (Honestly, I don't care about live TV. I don't use it and don't intend to. I don't know if I'm odd in that regard or not, but when I turn on the TV I am far more likely to watch Emby than CNN.) The 3 areas of functionality I see that aren't entirely up to snuff from my perspective are books, video games, and remote use of Emby. I'm not quite sure how video games would work and I'm not sure Emby can do much about remote use given that Emby doesn't control the Internet router or firewall, so that leaves books. (I suspect Photos could use a little love too, but it works and I haven't paid a lot of attention to how it could be improved.) I am presently trying to group many ebooks into a collection with the related videos. In Calibre it's very easy for me to search the books, they're grouped as a "Series" of the collection name I am filling, so I can search on the series name in Calibre and I get them all. Emby doesn't integrate with Calibre, so when I search for them in Emby I don't get most of the books, because Emby only looks at the title, so I have to search up each book separately in Emby and add it to the collection. Another problem I am having is that Emby is pointed at my Calibre collection, and in cases where Calibre has more than one format of the book (most of my ebooks, because Calibre does conversions and I've changed reader devices several times over the years) Emby doesn't recognize that the ebooks have a cover image (even though it's in the folder with the name "cover.jpg") so either I have to manually add the cover to the books or delete formats I'm not using at the moment. I see this as a bug. Also while Emby allows you to group videos (for example) together when you have more than one copy of the same video (for example, The Avengers in 720p, 1080p, and 3D could be listed as one item with one poster), when you have more than one version of an ebook, all versions are listed separately and you can't group them. As I have up to 5 different versions of some books (and most of my ebooks are in multiple formats), my ebook collection looks very cluttered (and mostly without covers, although mostly they're there) in Emby. Here's my perspective: When I am at the TV, I choose to use Emby. When I am sitting at my server (which, being a normal person, is my desktop), I find the video or audio in the file structure and watch it with VLC, find the photo and open it with Windows Photos, and use Calibre for my ebooks. I would like Emby to be good enough that when I'm at my server I don't find it easier to go into the file system, find the file, and use a specialized program on it.

  4. I'd like a way to set the primary thumbnail image to the current frame during playback in the web interface. I have a library set to content type "Home Videos & Photos". Emby does a pretty nice job choosing a frame from each video to use for its primary thumbnail image, but sometimes I'd like to choose a different frame. I can do this manually by playing the video, taking a screenshot, choosing "Edit images" from the "..." menu, clicking the "+" button, uploading the image, and selecting "Primary" as the type, which replaces the existing image. If I want the image to be a full frame then I need to wait a few seconds for the web interface to disappear before taking my screenshot, as there doesn't seem to be a way to dismiss it. And then the image I save is in a different resolution than the automatically generated ones. So although it's possible to generate my own thumbnails, it's a bit of a hassle. Since Emby Server obviously already has the capability to generate a primary thumbnail from a frame of video, it would be really nice to have a way to tell it to do this from a frame chosen manually during playback. I'm thinking a little snapshot button could be added to the playback interface. Or if that's too obtrusive, hide it behind a "..." menu. A related request: It would be great to be able to pick which of the items inside a folder would be used for the folder's thumbnail. These are small issues but would be really nice for organizing collections of home videos and other media that can't be easily looked up in databases.

  5. Similar to this old post, I'm suggesting a tab that would be titled Watchlist and could be placed in between Suggestions and Favorites. The functionality would pretty much be a copy of Favorites, just with a + symbol added next to the heart and other symbols that let you favorite a movie etc. The previous post had mentioned extra functionality such as automatically removing a movie from Watchlist after it has been watched. This would be nice, but is unnecessary because after watching a movie you can simply click the + symbol a second time to remove it from Watchlist. I would imagine this would be very easy to implement as a rebranded copy of Favorites. Adding other features could come later. Edit: added link to old post

  8. It would be great if i could set the server to delete certain shows after a user has watched it. I happen to watch "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" and "The Colbert Report", everyday, and with "News"ish type shows, there is no need to keep the episodes around. So i would like to set MB to auto delete those 2 shows, 3 days after one user has watched it.

  9. Hello! I'm recently wrote a Chrome Extension for me and my friends and thought I'd share it here. You can use it to synchronise your watching on Emby. Kinda like WatchParty. Here's the Github link: https://github.com/Quadrubo/emby-sync-watch Instructions on how to install / use: https://github.com/Quadrubo/emby-sync-watch#emby-sync-watch If you have any question let me know. It's a bit janky because it's my first Chrome Extension and I didn't have any experience before making this. Feel free to use it however you like and have fun I also need help designing a Logo for the Extension, my Design skills are awful and I don't think continuing to steal Embys Logo is the right way so if anyone has experience creating Logos please contact me, any help is appreciated Changes Version 1.5 Extension Bugfix: Fixed a bug where the Extension would not work at when the Emby Server language is set to anything other than english Version 1.4 Extension Improvement: After a connection failure, new connections can be made without reloading the Webpage Version 1.3 Extension New Feature: Profiles You can save Profiles and load them to connect to different servers! Improvement: Better output of the Server Version 1.2 Extension New Feature: Pressing in the middle of the screen to play / pause Server New Feature: Changing of the Port is possible via the "port.json" file Improvement: Better output of the Server Version 1.1 Both New Feature: Rewrite Improvement: Clean up of Code Server New Feature: Supports connections over the Internet by forwarding a TCP Port

  11. Feature Request. A present I have several user accounts setup for family members. When we sit down together to watch a movie we currently log into one account (Mostly mine), so obviously only this account gets the watched status. What happens then is everyone uses my account because there's isn't up-to date and it's "just easier". This results in my account telling me I've watched something when I haven't... I would like the ability to log into my account and select/deselect which other users are present so that when a movie/TV episode is watched together, their watched statuses are updated accordingly? The next time you log in again all other users would have been deselected. It could be implemented so each user account can do this, or only select user accounts can. Even a special "Family" user account, or multiple viewers button as long as everyone's watched status is correct. Even just ticking the users present on the login screen before login into an account.

  12. I suggested in a totally different thread a bit ago about possibly adding Discogs as a meta fetcher... https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/79280-duplicate-music-artists-entries-how-to-get-rid-of-them/ That thread has had a few +1 reply posts. As such i figured adding it to the feature requests was the proper way to gauge interest. If you have used MP3tag you should be familiar with Discogs. Its a GREAT alternative to Musicbrainz.

  13. Please read this post first. I was wondering if it would be possible to add something that would allow you to skip the intro to shows automatically while binge watching. When watching Netflix it does this for some shows, and im not sure if thats a feature of Netflix itself or a Chrome extension i use called "Flix Assist" but it would be a nice feature to have within Emby as well. and possibly even create a custom timed skip for specific shows

  14. As far as I know, emby "only" uses the tag-field "year". My suggestion is integrate the "Original release date" (maybe in brackets behind the date). lots of albums are remastered and I always get confused, though emby does not show the original date.

  18. The security warning means that the client (you) should not trust the connection to the endpoint (your server) because the certificate could not be validated for said endpoint. Basically the mismatch means the browser doesn't really know if your connection is to your server. But you do know it's your server, so not an issue. The warning message doesn't mean your server itself is not secure or open to hacks. Doesn't mean it's secure either. If you want to see the details from a browser like Chrome (or Chromium) go to your site via IP to trigger the warning then press f12. The browser developer tools will open with a security overview showing the reason for the warning and the negotiated secure connection settings.

  19. I can't see if you are using a sub domain or not. What I have done is i have domain say mynas.synology.me, for Emby in the reverse proxy setting I use sub domain emby. So the url is emby.mynas.synology.me. The nice this you can add any number of applications just by adding them to the reverse proxy with a different sub domain. app1.mynas.synology.me app2.mynas.synology.me app3.mynas.synology.me And no need to add any port forwards.

  21. The browser verifies if the host header matches the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) on the certificate. if it doesn’t (like when you use the IP address to access it on your LAN via https) it gives a warning. Internally, I use http and the IP address and port. If you want to use https internally –I don't see why since it's your LAN and you're streaming video/audio– and you don't want to receive a warning (that you can instruct your browser to trust BTW), then you'll need a way to resolve the domain name to the IP address internally (DNS server, a router with static DNS service or a loopback capable router). So when you type your domain it matches the presented certificate. I trust that you've already configured a certificate on your NAS (e.g. the free Let's Encrypt). When connecting remotely, do you receive a warning on your browser? If you don't then you should be fine. You can also use a free tool (this is for iOS) to check your domain and any others. TLS Inspector (https://www.tlsinspector.com/). As for whether it's organizational or for security. It's for both. It's easier to remember embymedia.mynas.synology.me, for example, instead of your domain and some port number (e.g. https://mynas.synology.me:31586). And for security, it adds an extra layer to your remote access by “reverse funneling” everything through the reverse proxy over a single standard secure port (443) and hiding what's behind the proxy. So (as mentioned by @BaukeZwart), port scans don't reveal much, and unless someone knows that you have a subdomain called embymedia for example, they won't be able to reach your Emby’s login screen. On the topic of security, I highly recommend enabling DSM's firewall (unless you have a dedicated firewall appliance). Just make sure you understand how it works, otherwise you might lock yourself out. However, the basic idea with any firewall is to block the whole world and allow only what you want (e.g. your local subnet and your country, certain protocols or ports). It’ll work but it’s not as secure and as elegant as using a Reverse Proxy. Your domain name (or public IP address) will take anyone to your Emby’s login screen. Once you start opening remote access, you should secure as much (layers) as you can on your device IMHO.

  22. In order for the system to work properly in many ways, a stream that is in a paused state, has to report that periodically to the server. There is really no way around this (without creating a multitude of other problems).

  25. That's very true... But other than transcoding, my server (Xeon E3-1270) was handling everything just fine. Technically... it was handling that fine too, but there were times when I was trying to do something on the server and the transcoding would eat up most of my CPU cycles. I considered upgrading the whole server... but the card was MUCH cheaper than replacing CPU, MB, and RAM. Especially considering that I'm running server class hardware. If I were just building new, I would definitely consider an Intel iGPU. But can you do that and still take advantage of server grade hardware? Specifically ECC?

  26. I never touched anything on Emby's side related to remote connections. All you need to do is to make sure that Emby is reachable and working fine on your LAN. Synology's (DSM) reverse proxy will make remote connections look local to Emby, so it's all transparent (and secure), and that's the best part. So no need for that "handled by reverse proxy" setting or any other remote settings on Emby (at least from my experience). What I've noticed is that you've configured emby.synology.me on your reverse proxy. You'll need to configure something for Emby as a subdomain (on the proxy server settings). emby.synology.me (or whatever you choose), points to your public address (the external WAN address assigned to you by your ISP as it appears on the Synology DDNS server when updated by your Synology NAS). So you'll need something to take it further "internally" when it's intercepted by DSM's reverse proxy and that would be the subdomain (you can use whatever you want), like mymedia.mynas.synology.me or emby.mynas.synology.me… It’s like dialing a company’s main board and then punching in an extension number. The main board number is your public IP address, the extension is your Emby server (or any other services you want to expose over the reverse proxy, like File Station or the DSM management interface for example). Use https/443. https://mymedia.mynas.synology.me I posted the below screenshot on another thread too. I hope the above helps, in addition to the excellent guidance you’ve already received.

  29. I am sorry for been updating this plugin, I just have not had the time nor motivation to work on it anymore, and I kinda forgot it even existed to be totally honest.. If anybody would like to fork the Github repo to try and fix it up & submit some pull requests, I (and it would appear the community members as well) would very much appreciate it. I still have the Github repo linked to a Discord webhook so I'll see whenever a pull request has been started and I'll be able to review them & publish releases to this thread & Github releases. This plugin desperately needs to be rewritten, I have very little knowledge in C# so the code isn't very readable to say the least, I believe this was my first project that I ever worked on with C#. tldr; I have been too busy & lacking in motivation to work on this plugin recently. if anyone is interested in maintaining this plugin, please let me know via PMs.

The zip file needs to be updated time to time and even if someone needs a particular image , they gotta download the whole zip file. I suggest you can simply just upload all your images in google drive and share the public url , then you can simply update anything there , it will be lot more convenient for everyone . Lastly thanks for the great work

  36. I wish it were that easy. You have to do it through their web form to request partner support. Then you can escalate your device and get the Beta firmware. The problem is Roku is adopting users into the Beta firmware that have never asked to be part of that program. They do not have enough Beta testers. So they go about silently adopting users and updating their devices. This caused the problem. We had to deduce okay it was a firmware update. Then figure out.. okay if you just use the Emby app they do not adopt you. They must have issues in some major app and if you use that app often enough you get adopted into the Beta firmware to help chase down issues as they watched your device crash. I am assume Netflix. People adopted in without being asked must use Netflix often. Roku wants to chase down crashes on Netflix using firmware version 10 they need users who use Netflix. That is my assumption and we get caught in the cross fire because Roku changed parts of their video capability reporting. The response of the CanDecodeVideo has changed. It no longer works like it did before. That caused the problem. We have firmware 10 now. The Beta application has been updated. What a wild bumpy ride it has been. A pot hole followed by a flat tire. It is our fault the tire went flat but it is Roku fault the road had the pot hole. If they had told us the pot hole was coming we would've fixed our tire. But this is all water under the bridge. History. We can now go back to comfort of watching on our Roku.

  37. He meant the Beta app for the Roku. If you get the Emby Beta for Roku it should work on both 9.4 and 10.0. Apologies for the problem. It was early code developed when there was no other way to detect codec support. Roku never gave us notice they were going to change that section we depended on. We were using it in some undocumented ways to produce faster results when reading device video capabilities. Apologies this was ever an issue.

  43. Hi all, Thanks @Lukefor your clarification. I was also looking for a cache system especially for music (for movie or TV, download is perfect). Like others, I'm migrating from Subsonic/Dsub to full Emby eco-system. cache is important for me as I do some trips (car, train, plane) and sometime, there is no network at all for some time. I'd like to listen next songs in my playlist (or current queue) even if there is no network. Hope my comment will add some weight into scale to prioritize or to consider this request ;-) Thanks.

  44. I'm also awaiting this feature. Today I upgraded my monthly subscription to a lifetime license so I hope that this feature comes in the near future. I really like Emby more than Plex but I must admit that for some features in Emby we are have to wait a very long time while Plex are supporting this already a long time.

  45. To gauge interest... What if you had the ability to "Forget" a series for the purposes of Next Up display. That is, it would no longer show in Next Up - unless you watched another episode. Sometimes you maybe watch a series for a while and, even though there is more of it or more is made later, maybe it isn't as good as the earlier seasons or maybe you just don't have time for it anymore. So you'd like it to quit showing up in your Next Up list so it is less cluttered and you can focus on the series you are actually watching now. If you start watching it again, the "forget" would be forgotten and it would start to show up in Next Up again.

  48. Also, encoding to hevc will require quite a bit more resources on the server end. Most people's setups wouldn't handle it well I imagine. We try to limit the number of options we put in that would only benefit very small audiences and have the potential to cause large audiences to make problems for themselves . Eventually, I'm sure this will be the norm but I'm not sure it is ready yet.
    1 point
  49. In this scenario why aren't you running the server on the more powerful machine? It couldn't really be powered down since the delay of booting and starting the transcoding process would confuse and annoy users. If it's running all the time and you need that level of muscle why not run the services there?
