Emby Server 4.5.3 is currently rolling out. Here are the highlights. New Search Experience New search for mobile and desktop layouts. Improvements over previous search: There's now a Top Results section which provides a truly global search, something we didn't have before You can see all the different types of items that matched the search, and filter by type The type categories are now ordered by search relevance, whereas previously they were just hard-coded Mobile version: Download Subtitles During Video Playback There's a new search for subtitles option in the subtitles menu of the video player: Click that and you'll get the subtitle search dialog that you're already accustomed to: Select one to download and the dialog will close, and your new subtitles will show up immediately and also embedded into the subtitle menu: Add to Playlists and Collections with Drag and Drop This should make adding to collections and playlists a little more fun. You'll notice that collections and playlists are now in the sidebar: If you pin the sidebar to make it always visible, now you can drag and drop content to add them to your collections and playlists: You can drag just about anything, from posters, to list items, to individual text links such as the artist name underneath a song: And this will add everything for that artist. This should help make building your holiday playlists and collections more fun than ever, and it all works with touch input as well. Add to Play Queue with Drag and Drop Just drag something onto the now playing bar such as a poster: As soon as you hover over, you'll see this: But you can drag logs of other things too, such as list items: Or even text links from posters or list items. For example, drag the whole item to queue that item, or drag one of the text links to queue the artist, album, etc.: And most important of all, it works with touch input. Other Improvements Support clicking individual text items in list items Support add to play queue with drag and drop Support add to playlists and collections with drag and drop Add profile checking for MP2Video hardware decoders Improve subtitle track selection when always show subtitles is selected Prevent ffmpeg hw processing of 10bit when device doesn't support it Add Nvidia NVDEC decoder variant for HEVC VAAPI: Use color formats from detection Improve detail screen backdrop display Reduce messaging from server to android and iOS apps causing the app background processes to run Show songs on artist detail screen Support downloading subtitles during video playback Update same time recording threshold to 15 minutes Improve ability of other devices to discover emby server New search interface for mobile and desktop Add top results section to search Improve searching for songs using album name Expand artist split whitelist Add http version to server log Bug Fixes Fix play all/shuffle on collections comprised of folders Various fixes for codec level detection Fix interlaced video being incorrectly stream copied with HLS Fix remote play of playlists being sorted by name Fix webp image support not being used in certain cases Fix repeated subtitle downloads of .sub format Fix undefined dlna display name Fix channel logos intermittently disappearing while scrolling the guide in Firefox Fix incorrect iOS scroll after cancelling context menu Fix artists added to collections not showing View the full article3 points

Hello, can we please remove all those "see all" in the new release? Not all of them are aligned and all of them look ugly in the UI and are redundant! Thank you!2 points

Just manually updated my Synology DS418play to Update 3 and everything with Emby appears to be good. It hasn't shown up in DSM yet in most places, so you will need to manually download the update or just wait a few days For information about the update and where to download the pat file from can be found in the link below https://www.synoforum.com/threads/dsm-version-6-2-3-25426-3-released.4761/2 points

I'll try to keep this feature request short and simple. When the Emby server needs to transcode audio to make it compatible for the Emby client, it will use a hardcoded value for the bitrate that cannot be changed. For example, if the audio gets transcoded to Dolby Digital AC-3, it will always use a bitrate of 384 kb/s. This value cannot be changed, even though Dolby Digital AC-3 allows a maximum bitrate of 640 kb/s. Although 384 kb/s is a decent compromise between quality and data, it is very compressed and the quality is far from being transparent. The same thing applies to every other audio codec the Emby server may transcode to, such as AAC. So the request is simple, allow users to specify the bitrate that should be used for transcoding audio. Thanks, Charlie1 point

Feature request for Auto Box Sets & the Emby server to show missing collection items / placeholder images for what we don't have that is part of a collection. http://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/22732-auto-box-sets-show-missing-collection-items/ Thanks, hoping to see it worked out.1 point

Hi all, I spent some time on a new project: locast2dvr. It's somewhat of a rewrite of locast2plex with added functionality. Obviously massive thanks to the folks that wrote locast2plex! I decided to rewrite since I wanted to add functionality: Automatically downloads FCC facilities for station matching Ability to not only act as a HDHomerun tuner, but also as an m3u tuner, Ability to provide EPG data from Locast as XMLTV Run multiple instances in order to stream from multiple Locast locations Multiplex multiple instances in order to have Emby connect to only one server and one EPG Any todo's are captured as Github issues, but any feedback is welcome!1 point

I noticed recently while using Kodi that one episode had a play count of 3, even though I was sure I had watched it only once. Then I remembered that it took me three sessions to finish the episode, so I did some digging and it looks like every time you play an item the play count goes up. It doesn't matter if you finish the thing or if you play just one second, it will just +1 the playCount field in the database. Is this by design or a bug? Shouldn't the play count go up only after reaching the threshold at which an item gets marked as watched? On the same note, can we have the play count and the last played date displayed somewhere? Maybe next to the date added or, if not, in the media details section.1 point

Thanks, I'll give this a try. It looks like it should be able to work with Plex also (which I'm going to keep for the time being until I'm sure about Emby). Appreciate your help.1 point

I sure do. SSD make all the difference in the world on a larger system and cut way down the IO that normal drives have. Besides SSD are cheap these days. Putting your cache and transcoding folders on SSD can really speed things up. If you use TV then recording to them and post processing after the fact really helps.1 point

Each person will have varying experiences. Networking hardware, networking config, hard drives, bus, CPU etc. All of these things will factor. The access/seek time of an NVMe M.2 is significantly different to a 5400 rpm desktop HDD.1 point

OK, super. I was going to add an audiobook library, but I only have 5 or 6 of them, so I can live without that, or add them into my main Music folder. Thanks for your help.1 point
-
yep this is to be expected with two Music Libraries its been reported a month or so ago by me in the beta section as not ideal to have duplicate albums assigned to an artist "just" because you have it in two libraries they should stay separate the reason is Artists etc are global and not tied to a library like movies or series are one work around is make the second library an Audiobook library - internally audiobooks and music are the same but you do get the separation - until you add a second audiobook library.....1 point

If you're using a VPN only to hide your emby server, I might suggest using SSL and run it through cloudflare. You can do it for free. It isn't quite the level of a VPN, but it does run through a proxy.1 point

There could be other benefits but that one is huge in the case of administering several systems that need to point to that location and an ever-expanding or changing set of actual drives. The pooling makes adding, removing, swapping drives a zero-admin task in all of those systems.1 point

That should be aggregated, at least that is like that for me in format SxxExx-Exy, i get both episode names divided by comma and both episode description summarized into one entry.1 point

UPDATE: Fixed. McAfee freaked out after the update and blocked emby. Sorted. Sorry about that. I lost all 'over the network' connectivity today after the 4.5.3.0 update. What changed in the network? I have all ports that I am aware of opened and directly to the proper IP. I have restarted my entire network and media server, no different. This setup has worked for many months. They only thing to change today was the update. Current open ports: 8096, 8097 (what i use), 80, 443, 8920, 8921 (what i use) embyserver.txt embyserver-63742550398.txt embyserver-63742602498.txt embyserver-63742602510.txt embyserver-63742625118.txt embyserver-63742626837.txt embyserver-63742627454.txt embyserver-63742628406.txt embyserver-63742629053.txt1 point

@Luke In my first post I listed Emby Android which refers to the version you just posted. That version would not even play the files and It would usually freeze or just sit at black. @ebr @FrostByte Mounting the file system on my shield has resolved the issue. I can now play the videos without problem. I did notice one problem. I had a share name Synced_TV and it would not play as a file no matter what I did. I changed the name of the share to SyncedTV and it now plays files properly. Thanks for the help. @rbjtech I'm thinking my NAS with an arm processor must have some kind of http limit stopping me from getting high enough bit rate. What hardware are you currently using to see the http work up to 160 mbps?1 point

As I remarked just now in another thread, this is appropriate for multiversions of differing qualities only. For people who have used multiversions for alternate cuts, having a separate watched flag would seem useful. Paul1 point

That seems an unnecessary complication. If your router does loopback, you simply use the external address, or maybe name if you have a DNS entry for it. No other manipulation required. If you can't do loopback, you can define two servers, one having the internal address or name and the other having the external address or name - the idea of having one server entry with a choice of addresses adds no benefit over this simpler approach that is already possible. Alternatively, if you're able to set up in internal DNS server, only visible within your network, you can make that return the Emby server's internal address. You can then have one entry in the client, defined by name, and the client will get the internal address from your DNS server when at home, and the external address from Internet DNS servers when away. In my experience with the Android and iOS clients they can even handle going in or out of the house and changing network while playing without even a glitch. Paul1 point

I think that playCount should reflect how many instances were actually started, regardless of Watched state, which should be another counter. Real life example: in my (albeit special) circumstances, single account is shared between 10-odd users. For an item with high Play count but low Watched count, it would be pretty safe to assume it ain't worth the time. I do like the idea, tho, of Counters and Last Played added as a stat somewhere. Edit: Or an option to, as Playback Reporting plugin does, aggregate multiple plays into single one.1 point

Sorry for this late response Luke, I had removed the 'COLLECTIONS' library because I wanted to create a 'spanned volume from 2 physical disks. Of the files that were on the original disk, I had to backup first and then format the original disk after which the 'COLECTION' library would no longer follow the correct path ((Think / Thought). The 'COLLECTION' library has now recovered by itself.1 point

I figured it out.... I had enabled it as a service but forgot to change the "log on as" to an account with access to the NAS shares. It's all set now that I updated the user/password on the service.1 point

Watched status works the same in Emby and other media servers, trakt or other places. It's not a matter of media being added or removed or the library it came from or from Live TV. It tracks if you've seen the episode/movie. It's if you EVER watched ANY version of it. It's DESIGNED to be a HISTORICAL representation of your viewing life not tied to the life of the media or the medium in which you saw it, just as in real life. There are even plugins for Emby to import/export this to other tracking services that people use. So again Watched status is NOT designed to be tied to the existence of the media. As stated before if you've ever seen Jaws, Star Wars or Die Hard you can never un-see it in real life short of getting amnesia. That is the purpose of the watched status with minor changes for the digital arena. Emby does #1 for the media but not for watched status for obvious reasons as it's historical and you can't change history. Emby does #2 as you actually watch it in Live TV but you can't change a flag in the guide, nor should you be able to. It happens automatically as you actually watch it. If however you ever have the movie or episode in your libraries then you would be able flip it's status at that point as there is now a reason to do so. Emby will allow you to do things like "unwatch" a series or season which is helpful if you want to re-watch it again and be able to track where you are. If for example I were going to rewatch Game of Thrones or The West Wing I will reset the watch status. #3 doesn't make sense. It doesn't matter if you watched Jaws from a library or from a TV channel. It's the fact you watched it that matters. Watched status isn't tied to the media and you could get things flagged watched as soon as you add it to your system. For example if you were to go watch the new Top Gun release in 2021 in Imax at the Theaters, then marked it watched at Trakt and have Emby setup to import/export to it then as soon as you add this movie to your Emby system it will already show up as watched (IT SHOULD). If you have The Terminator in 720, 1080 and 4K on your system and watch any of them for the first time they are ALL WATCHED. It's not the media itself that matter to watched but the fact any version, anywhere that you track status of that matters. What your first post shows is a glitch that CAN BE FIXED and Luke already commented on that. But we don't need to change the way watched status works, just need to fix that glitch in display.1 point

I was extremely surprised to find that there is a statically coded limit set on search results in the web client especially when I found it's set so low as 30. For anyone with large libraries this makes the search almost useless. I have over 100 albums with the phrase "Now that's what I call music" in them. Trying to search those to give a limited subset of my music collection in order to check through them returned 30 of them and an apparently random 30 at that. I've manually upped the limit on my server to 130 in the javascript for now, but that's not exactly an ideal scenario and will get reset every time I upgrade. Please guys, let's have full paginated search results for any search term entered as with just about any other search system in the world. Please Pretty please with bells on?1 point

I've love to have this as well since most of the newer GPUs can easily do this for many streams real-time. The advantage of using h.265 over h.264 is bandwidth. For the same quality transcode the h.265 would typically need less bits. For those people on ISPs such as Comcast/Xfinity where you only get 10 to 15 Mbit upload this would allow you to still be able to support a few remote clients. Likey 1 or 2 more remote sessions could be squeaked out of that pipe.1 point

Isnt it great when the community troubleshoots a simple issue before developers do? Expect this to continue as Emby grows. Plex all over again....1 point

@bonbonking that's really not true at all, and you can see for yourself by looking at the commit histories on the repositories. Let's take the server repository for example: https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Emby/graphs/contributors From some quick math, our paid staff was responsible for roughly 98% of the commits, and I am solely responsible for 95% of them alone. You'll see similar numbers in the other repositories. By the way, guess where the majority of our paid staff comes from: community members and volunteer contributors. Over the years we've rewarded and hired our community members who have shown interest, strong technical ability and initiative to get involved. So really, we are not bad people. We're just a team of software developer (and others) who are trying to earn a living.1 point

They have to be open source since that's the license they inherited with the source code. They have no choice over the matter. It of course will work ok at the server level as it's built on an older version of Emby. But Emby has improved many things from that version such is the transcoding engine, now customized version of Exo player, etc. Jellyfin has some nice things for sure but it's no V5 Emby. Around the corner is a new Live TV that will be game changing for many Live TV users. Of course those are server features. Emby has really nice apps and clients which are in a completely different level of functionality to those from Jellyfin which falls way short in this regard. Anyone using Live TV in the US, CA or UK is most likely paying for Guide Data which is included with Emby. The lifetime license of Emby for those users actually pays for itself. Some people also feel like purchasing an Emby Premiere License is a worthwhile investment and they feel it's worth compensating developers for the work they do. Emby in turn is adding people to the project to help it's customers as well. Heck we even do remote help with people. As far as the last line I quoted. My question to you is, why are you hear then? Go do your work on Jellyfin and enjoy the Emby Fruits you got for free. Maybe a thank you?1 point
-
I agree. Emby looks pretty good and it does not hide functionality behind fluff. I mostly use Emby on my Rokus but I have Fire TVs and a Shield TVs and works and looks fine on all of those. The one thing that I worry about is that Emby might try too hard to make itself "pretty" and lose speed and ease of functionality in the process of trying to beautifying what is already pretty enough. It's like the part of our culture where a pretty girl or handsome man has plastic surgery to look dubiously "better." Emby looks fine and, for me, I really do not need it to be prettier.1 point
