sjkiss 21
Hi there: I'm trying to access my Emby server 4.5 via Emby connect over a strictly mobile connection. I've turned my phone's wifi off and select "Sign in with Emby Connect", enter my user name and password and get: Invallid username or password. Please Try again. I've reset and changed my password several times. Are there any settings I need to change in the server settings? Thank you.
pwhodges 1534
It is important not to mix up your Connect credentials with your server credentials - have you tried connecting directly with your server without using Connect to check that the access works OK? There are two articles to help you through what you need to check: https://support.emby.media/support/solutions/articles/44002137137-remote-setup https://support.emby.media/support/solutions/articles/44001849007-connectivity Paul
sjkiss 21
What is the difference between my connect credentials and server credentials? I have a user name "admin" for my Emby server (no other users) and then I have an Emby Connect user name, which gets me on to these forums as well. pwhodges 1534
Have you been using Connect successfully previously? If so, was it only at home? Have you tried connecting without Connect, by just specifying on your phone the external address and port for your server, and then logging in with your credentials on the server? sjkiss 21
I'm kind of lost. I only have one user on my server (me, as admin) do I need to make a new user for myself for Emby Connect to work?
Luke 37118
It sounds like you're not understanding the difference between Emby Connect and the local users on your server. @cayars can help you with this.

Ignore Connect - you don't need to use it (in fact, your Connect login is the same as your forum login). You can simply connect to your server and log in as your user on it - you must have that working before you can use Connect anyway. That's easy at home, any instructions you want are given in: https://support.emby.media/support/solutions/articles/44001849007-connectivity If you are wanting to access from outside home, Connect won't help you - that's not what it does. You need to know your external IP address (maybe getting a domain name to make things a little easier), and to open the necessary port (8096 by default) in your router, or maybe forward 80 to 8096 to save having to specify it. Instructions are here: https://support.emby.media/support/solutions/articles/44002137137-remote-setup The above is about using http for access. If you want to go the last step and make external access secure, using https, you must have a domain name, and you need to get a certificate. Come back to the forum when normal access is working and ask about that if you want it. Paul
Carlo 4330
Sometimes I wish EC didn't use usernames at all for common logins (rarely used) but instead was just a DDNS type service so the only place usernames/passwords existed was on the Emby server. sjkiss 21
I'm working through this, but I don't understand how I make use of the external IP address? Locate Your External Address Your external address is displayed on the front page of the server dashboard, labeled as Remote access. *****This is the address you should use when away from home.****
pwhodges 1534
It is what you provide as your server when away from your local network. Using a browser, you'd type: http://<external address>:8096 assuming you haven't changed the default port or forwarded a different port to it in your router. You have to link that external address to your Emby server's local address in the router for this to work. You can get a domain name to use as an alternative to remembering the address (a domain name is given the address, and the browser looks it up and then uses the address internally). You may also be able to use your external address when on your local network, but that depends on your router - if you can it means you can set up your devices to work wherever they are with no changes. sjkiss 21
I've got all this working well now. For anyone from the future. Automatic port mapping was not working running Emby 4.5 on a QNAP TS-128. Setting up port forwarding did the trick.
