grenadecx 6
I think it would be quite useful to allow playback to continue in the background for videos. This could be a setting. Youtube is a good example on this when you're on a subscription.
Luke 37112
We do support picture in picture on android which will allow the video player to pop out and you can use other apps with the Emby video on top.
grenadecx 6
Right, and that's great! But I'm not refering to the picture in picture, however it's also great that emby supports it I'm talking about playback in the background when screen gets turned off.
Luke 37112
You're saying you just want to listen to videos?
grenadecx 6
Well Yes? And also no. When you're on the go a lot and you're watching something, just because you need to put the phone down temporarily for whatever reason really, having the playback interrupted is simply annoying. Having the playback be played in the background have multiple benefits. Playing a music video for one, listening to video podcasts is another. Maybe I'm the only one that consumes videos without looking at the screen all the time, in that case feel free to ignore the request. But I do think this is something that improves the application, very much the same way youtube improved theirs.I guess if you somehow allowed thirdparty video players, same result could be achieved allowing someone to use something like mx player. Luke 37112
Ok yes I think we should add this as an option. Does YouTube do it as an option?
grenadecx 6
Thanks for considering it. And yes they do, I've added some screenshots for references.

Luke 37112
Quick question - with the youtube option enabled, if you manually press the device power button to turn off the screen, does it still pause video like most video apps, or does it keep playing?
grenadecx 6
It keeps playing. So when background play is enabled, turning of screen will not stop playback, and pressing the home button continues playback but minimizes to popup display and after that if you turn of it continues playing ad well. troyhough 57
This will be on the app's beta channel soon. Is this possible for the Chrome web player?
Luke 37112
Is this possible for the Chrome web player? Only if the browser has an option for it, which i doubt. There's nothing the web app can do to force playback to continue when the screen is off.

troyhough 57
Hey @@Luke, apparently the browser does support it! Go to this link and hit the play button: http://player.listenlive.co/52371 Then shut off the screen. Can this method (background play - audio only with screen off) be implemented into the Mobile Web Player like you did recently with the Android App?
