High End CPU vs Low End CPU + GPU

Hello everyone, first time posting. I have searched about hardware a lot but I have a question regarding the differences between hardware.

I have a i3-2100 sitting around. I realize this would suck for transcoding. I was looking at a E3-1230V2 with a supermicro board. Would I be better running a i3-2100 with lets say a 750Ti or even some other gpu, or would just a better processor by itself such as the 1230V2 be better?

I really don't know what is good when it comes to hardware exceot based on the passmark score. I am trying to user older Xeon such as Sandy/Ivy/Haswell but I am also trying to save money wherever possible.

Well I know I will never transcode 4k. Why would we need it outside of the house at 4k is beyond me. Anything transcoded (so outside the house) would be 1080p so I am just trying to see if it is an option to save some money and possibly upgrade the cpu in the future but still be able to run some streams now. Anything inside the house is direct played. Seems like if I bought  a gpu it would be between a 1050ti or a 1060 if I could get either on a discount used.

I have some 4k content but I also have it converted to 1080p so whenever we are outside the house we use the 1080 and we only use 4k at home and that is only for the small amount of 4k we have so I don't have a lot of duplicates.

The thing about "what I need for transcoding" is that it's really not straight forward. You're going to have you system for a while. What you use it for today, may not be what you use it for in 6 months. And then there's the question of mobile devices. That number and how they are used is going to be dynamic. I ignore passmark scores because it doesn't really give you a good sense of transcode scalability. You say you won't use 4k, but there are codecs that are difficult to transcode, like VC1. If you use devices that you want to use seeking and requires audio transcoding, then sometimes the server will go to a full transcode. So the question is always the same. What is the most you will ever require?

I want the ability of at least two full transcodes. I dont think I would ever see more than that while we are outside the house. I guess If I wanted to be safe I would say 5 because maybe I add a few family members onto being able to stream from my house. I have an option of a 1050ti for $80 right now and the i3-2100 I have right now. Otherwise I could get the Xeon and if money cooperates with me soon then the xeon and 1050ti. I realize the what hardware do I need is a general question I was more directing the idea of what is the performance difference for transcoding between a single better cpu vs a low end cpu + a decent gpu or even a really good gpu. I would prefer to use the 2100 if it were to be good enough with a gpu but I will spend the money if it is better to not use it at all.

The 1050 with the patch will work well for that. But be aware that somethings always require the CPU. The 1050 will be massively better than the Xeon. There is really no comparison, between them.

10-4 Thanks for the info. I probably will still upgrade the processor to maybe a i5-2400s so then it has a few extra cores and some encryption capabilities. Still getting the 1050ti.

Unfortunately I just ordered a ASUS P8Z77 board. Got it for $93. I need 4 PCIE slots at least at x8. I have two SAS HBA's a 10G card and one for a 1050Ti.
