FreeNAS-11.2-U6 step by step setup guide

Hello,

I'm new to emby and relatively new to freenas. Can anyone share a step by step setup guide to install and configure emby on FreeNAS-11.2-U6?

I have installed emby and via the plugin GUI and added the mount point into the jail. The permissions in the jail should be root from what I can see. I'm having a little trouble navigating to the jail mount point from the emby admin console which makes me think I am missing a step. The source is /mnt/RED2/Movies and the destination inside the jail is /mnt/ONETB/iocage/jails/emby/root/media. I'm not sure how to navigate here as part of the emby library setup wizard. I'm just getting an empty library.

If anyone could share a step by step setup guide that would be great.

Thanks.

Hello, the problem concerns me as well as the user purplemonkey.
Thank you for linking the guide. I followed the instructions and the folders are mounted.

In Jails -> MountPoints I see that from the source folder

/mnt/privatmedien

, in which my media are all subfolders actually in the destination

/mnt/gewerbedaten/iocage/jails/emby/root/media/embymediaprivat

appear.
Unfortunately, I do not know how to add the folder in the library correctly, because navigating to

/mnt/commercial/iocage/jails/emby/root/media/embymediaprivat

 is not possible.

I try it with

/media/embymediaprivat

On the emby-homescreen, however,

privatmedien

already appears without content despite scanning the library.
On TV, I see under media server emby synonymous and the folder

privatmedien

but no content.

Hopefully and best regards

hey!

So if you can find the folder embymediaprivat via the emby GUI (in the library section) and no media is found or no containing folders are found the likely issue here is that you have permissions issues.

Can you do the following: open the shell on freenas (shell menu item)

write

cd /mnt/gewerbedaten/iocage/jails/emby/root/media/embymediaprivat

you should now be in the proper folder

type:

ls -la

this should list all the files and folders and owners in the current folders.

report back with a screenshot or copy/paste

you can check the other pdf here as well

Many thanks for the answer. I have implemented the instruction and get the result as it can be seen in the screenshot.

"wildeule" is the user in FreeNAS

Thanks for the feedback, glad it made a difference :) I assume your wildeule user did not have the 989 userid and you just changed the standard emby user to what ever wildeule is :D

Cheers

i am not on the latest adrian emby version (22 for me), i noticed when changing away from 4.3.0.14 to higher you need to change your package tree from quarterly to latest. I have not checked the u7 version either, on u6 at the moment. maybe next month :D

I think I'll be trying to leave all my jails where they currently are until FreeNAS 12.0, hopefully around the middle of 2020.  Updating things when FreeBSD goes EOL is just fraught with problems, and whilst it may be possible to work around some of them, it's too much pain for not much gain.  4.2.1 is playing nicely for me, so I'll hand onto that as long as I can.

I've upgrade to 11.2-U7 and forced pkg to latest. I then had to enter 'Y' to override the version mixmatch. However, once I did this I was able to upgrade to 4.3.0.26 and now 4.3.0.30 using the -f download from github.

So far webapp, Roku, and Android are all working and transcoding fine.

It was fairly painless:

All looks to be working fine :)

What was your process for forcing pkg to the latest?  Is the process in post #7 here what you used?

Thought I would give this a go on my FreeNAS 11.3 box, but the big downside to me is the lack of Hardware transcoding. Also, setting permissions is not easy. This version of FreeNAS uses iocages in the pools for the jails so all the install guides I saw were not applicable. The Emby plugin installed just fine and I updated to 4.5.0.5, but I can't get the SMB shares to work right now. But really, the lack of hardware encoding/decoding is a show stopper for me. If anyone knows how to get Intel QuickSync and Nvidia to work, I will consider this a lot more since I can see the advantages in having the app and raid in the same box..

Actually permissions on 11.3 are the easiest they've ever been. I just realized I never posted the guide I made for it.

Here you go: https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/85123-setting-permissions-in-freenas-113/

Hardware transcoding, that's a whole other ballgame. As far as I know it requires a base of FreeBSD 12 which FreeNAS is not there yet.

Thanks, that will be helpful. I see FreeNAS 12 will be out later this year. Maybe it will have FreeBSD 12 and fully support hardware transcoding. Then my FreeNAS box can be my primary Emby server. But for now I will use it as my secondary server to get IPTV backup shows. Don't need transcoding for that task.
