Thinking about switching to Synology from Windows.

If I were to switch to a Synology setup would something like the DS718+ or DS918+ be a sufficient starting point? My library isn't very large with only about 20 terabytes of storage.

I have the DS918+ (4 bay) and the DS1019+ (5 bay).  Both are great boxes.  They have the same CPU as the DS718+ that that machine should be good.  All of these machines support Hardware Transcoding which you want.  You have 20tb so you will probably want a 4 or 5 bay.  You could get smaller drives and have some room to upgrade.

Yep, I did that switch earlier this year to a DS418play.  Very happy I did it.  Using the Emby backup and restore made things really easy.  I did have to mass rename the folder names in my playlists, but other than that everything was automatic.  The longest process was copying everything over to the NAS

All of my stuff direct plays to my Samsung TV, so I really don't have any issues with mine.  I did try transcoding PGS subtitles on the fly once which made things a little choppy, but with SRT subs it direct plays so I just use SRT now.  The DS918+ will of course be better at any transcoding if you need that and I probably would go with the DS918+ myself if I had to do all all over.

You would be surprised how fast you can fill up harddrives if you have the space.  Having the ability use their expansion module is nice, something my DS418play can't use.  Of course you're going to lose at least one drive (or two if you wish) for repair so figure that in when considering bays and how valuable your data is.

Thanks for the feedback. I was looking at the expansion module to add another 5 bays in the future. The DX517 is what would make the DS718+ viable. I was thinking of switching television first.  Television is currently only 6 terabytes of space currently and I delete the previous season content from most shows.
