Stuttering with DirectSteam and TrueHD 7.1 - But if switch to TrueHD while playing it works better

If I start a 4k film which has TrueHD 7.1 audio it will DirectStream due to LG TV capability. Fair enough. But it stutters ever few minutes. Stopping for 1-2 seconds then starting again.

Also when you first start the film when it goes into DirectStream sometimes it takes a while to start and also sometimes it glitches and you end up with a tiny video window in the top left corner like 100 pixels by 100 .

If I start the film but choose DTS as an audio track then it will play as DirectPlay . No stuttering and never any glitches when it first starts. If I then change the audio track while the film is playing to TrueHD 7.1, it then I presume changes to DirectStream but I don't get any stuttering …

I don't understand how it seems to play worse when you start the film with TrueHD audio but if you start with DTS then switch to TrueHD while playing, it works a lot better.

Any ideas?

If you are playing 4K streams with TrueHD, the audio will need to be converted to another format for playback.  As the file size is likely big, depending on the capabilities of the server and disk (and network and TV) it may struggle to keep up which will cause the stuttering and buffering you are seeing.

With regards to the difference between switching tracks before or during playback, there is an issue with the current release that causes incorrect track switching during playback, so selecting TrueHD possibly does nothing and keeps the current track, so you probably still only get DTS, not TrueHD when you change tracks during playback.  I think the Stats for Nerds is also incorrect at that point.  This issue is fixed in the next release (but it won't necessarily resolve the stuttering issue.

Personally, I would stick with the DTS track and have smooth playback.

The thing is, it is definitely switching. Because the DTS track is directors commentary. And the TrueHD track is the actual movie audio. So I can tell by listening what one is playing, and it is switching correctly during playback and definitely does play without stuttering compared to playing with TrueHD directly from the start.

So I'm not too sure why  :S

Also directplay and directstream. Does DirectStream use any cpu resource/hardware resource on the client compared to directplay, or is it the server that does the work?

And any idea when the new lg app version will be out?

Could you please send me an ffmpeg log from the server from one of these sessions?

All the work for DirectStreamng/Transcoding is done on the server so any impact on the client should be minimal.
