Is there a reference platform?

I know you guys are often dealing with limitations of the various apps/hardware you support. Was curious if there is a reference platform where generally everything works. I had thought it was the Nvidia Shield. But I have been reading it has issues with HDR.

HDR is an issue with all platforms that I'm aware of.  In general, the video world hasn't standardized entirely on HDR.

The HDR issue is only an issue for cropped content.

If the resolution is full HDR (3840x2160), then there isn't an issue.

Shield.

This is true as it relates to an end client because it direct plays the most varied content..I think people are also quite happy with Roku's in general.  Apple TV's while easy to use are much more restrictive in what they can do, and the app is a little behind the others in terms of feature set.

The Shield would not be the reference platform for the Server.  I think in general, the default/most used/most tested against is a Windows 10 platform.

Sorry, thought you just meant client.

So for that, I'd suggest the Shield, but for the server, that's upto you.

You could run the server on a Shield as well, but I have no knowledge of how well that works.

As @@legallink says, a Windows 10 PC is probably the most common OS to run the server on.

Thanks, I have a Shield and Windows 10 running my server, I had thought it was the best client but wanted to be sure. I also have some Roku TV's and while Emby is good on them I would say it is definitely inferior, but that is probably just a Roku thing, I am not a fan of how you have to ffw and skip back on the Roku.

I don't have any Rokus I use, but I believe@@speechles and @@ebr are working on a much better Emby experience for the Roku platform.

There is a beta channel for Rokus if you're interested in trying that before going out and buying a new Shield?

I own a Shield already and use it in my main viewing area. I may check out the betas for Roku but should clarify I wasn't intending to complain about the Roku app, I am perfectly happy with it to put something on in the bedroom. Just an annoyance the skipping thing.

I do not understand what you are talking about on the Roku when you say: "I am not a fan of how you have to ffw and skip back on the Roku." I never, if I pay attention to the thumbnails at all, have to skip back. I simply FF, or more often use the right arrow, to get to where I want to be and press OK or play and the Roku plays from that point. It is just about the simplest platform there is to move forward or backward on.

I have a Shield and I use it from time to time and each time I try the Shield I run into something that drives me back to the Roku/ The latest, and it has been reported, is that if you play from some ways into "Next up" (ex the 10th position) once the playback completes and you are returned to "Next up" you are returned to the position one space to the left. (ex the 9th position)

For me the Roku is a superior product for playback and general use. The Shield has marginally a better picture on some media but that "better" is so small a difference that it is not worth dealing with the other problems.

I am used to any video playback device, whether it be a DVR, Windows media center, or the shield, jumping a predetermined amount, say 30 seconds with one button press.

On the Roku I have to press it, and then watch it and guess when I think it's went the length I want. Never works well for me.

I agree.  The Roku is the only one that still does this these days and it always throws me for a loop too :).

If you use the arrow keys instead on the Roku, I believe it works more like you'd expect.

Have you tried using the arrow keys to move through the video? They jump a set amount and are quite precise. (10 seconds in each direction) The FF or RW are also pretty precise and you can see exactly where you are if you use the thumbnails. The 10 seconds are exact enough that 10 presses exactly skips the commercial breaks that happen during commercial breaks in NHL periods.

I am not sure what you mean, but it may be because I have a Roku TV, figured it would be the same. If I use the purple arrows on the D pad I get the behavior I mentioned in the OP. You have to push ok, and then it begins to play. The timer doesn't seem to give an accurate representation of how much I am skipping. And every time I hit ok to play, a loading bar comes up. Just not a smooth experience.

Using the FF arrows, the two arrow buttons just fast forwards as is expected. On either of these methods I never see any thumbnail.

To get the thumbnails you would need to install the "Roku thumbnails" plugin and allow it to process your library. Then you will see the thumbnails during FF/RW and when using the arrows. I really have no idea how the arrows and FF/RW behave without the thumbnails.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trick_mode

This is the patent Roku is using for it.

The trick play in Roku is simulation of a VCR playing the video while using fast-forward or rewind. You get the same effect a visual context clue as to where you are without having to rely on the counter display to tell you. This is one feature that sets the Roku apart is that it adopted a method to replicate what a VCR could do.

Yeah that method should go away like VHS has ;) or at least both should be available. From Roku I mean not Emby, I understand this is a Roku thing.
