Sammy 738
I really miss this capability in WMC and even Uverse.. Pause Live TV on one TV and pick up the stream on another TV. Currently, I hit record then pause and pick up the recording in the other room. Can this be made to work in Emby? 2
ebr 14930
Interesting idea. Of course, you've already discovered how to make this work. Isn't starting a recording almost easier than or at least exactly the same as what you are suggesting?

Isn't starting a recording almost easier than or at least exactly the same as what you are suggesting? There are some differences though. First, there's more button presses on the remote required to do this the way it is now. Second, in doing this way I now have a recording that needs to be manually deleted, causing even more button presses. Also, if I don't delete it soon enough it ends up in my MCEBuddy queue and then in my TV Series Library. WMC records the stream into to the pause buffer and allows that to be picked up on another device or screen. Since this is in the pause buffer it never needs to be manually deleted. That's how I think it works anyway. Sent from my SM-G960U1 using Tapatalk
Spaceboy 2496
Couldn’t you use remote play to play it on a second device? Obvs that only works from web client atm but hopefully ebr is working on incorporating remote play into the osd of the ATV app? [emoji3]
ebr 14930
Couldn’t you use remote play to play it on a second device? That would just start the channel in real time. We'd need a way for the server to know that these two devices need to share the same exact stream and stream position. The record button should be right on the OSD when watching though and, it seems to me that any other solution is going to be virtually the same as just hitting that record button... The only thing it wouldn't do is automatically delete after all devices were finished watching.

Obv 2nd option needs logic that would then delete the file once it’s been marked as watched elsewhere? I know it’s much more complicated than that but as an idea... For me remote play from the ATV device would 95% answer this requirement though
Carlo 4330
The trick to make this work seemingly is with virtual recording. For example if a person is watching anything Live it automatically starts recording that channel. If user switches to another channel it follows and starts another virtual stream and so on up to the limit of the amount of tuners at hand. When tuners are exhausted the oldest is discarded and re-used. Same with a scheduled recording being able to drop a virtual recording to make use of a tuner if needed. The virtual recordings follow the guide data so if a show ends at 2pm so does the virtual recording (but can still be accessible for say one hour after, deleted by a cleanup routine). This does lots of things and adds new features (as well as complexity). It would allow flipping back and forth between a couple of shows (really great for sports), allows you to pause and resume on a different device/tv. Would allow you to start watching something and half way through decide to record it (recording the whole show), etc. Certainly nothing I would expect "bolted on" to the current DVR, but when/if it's expanded would make for great feature set addendum. This is the way I had SageTV setup back when I was using it and developing for it. Right now the best/easiest method IMHO is to start recording what you are watching manually, then just resuming the play on the other device like already mentioned. And it’s on the money again here 2
Sammy 738
Just a little tidbit extraneous information.. Maybe not so well-known thing is that U-verse ran on Windows embedded and looking at their DVR interface it is obviously a WMC clone with some additional features added in. Sammy 738
It's been nearly 3 years and we've done a lot of testing with NextGen LiveTV whixh would bring this functionality only to see it fizzle into vaporware. Any hope @Luke @ebr? 1
Luke 37116
This is a good idea for future updates. Thanks for the feedback.
Sammy 738
Can this ever be incorporated? It's been years now and it was shown to be possible in the EmbyTV Beta program and could be incorporated into current updates to the LiveTV transcoding system. 1
Sammy 738
Following up.. When one hits "Pause" doesn't Emby start recording at that point? Why can't it be set up to resume at another location from that same recording / pause point?

The premise of what you're asking for in the first post is certainly possible for future updates.

True, but in order to start playback after any length of time being paused, Emby has to create a "recording" to play from when time shifted. I'm just saying it would be nice to allow this "recording" to be accessed from another device within a reasonable time limit.
