Guest asrequested
Anyone use one of these HP expander cards with an LSI 9211-8i? If yes, does the 3GB bandwidth cause problems? https://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-487738-001-468405-001-24-Bay-3Gb-PCI-e-SAS-Expander-Card/172959134706?epid=2196419301&hash=item28452af3f2:g:CHsAAOSwDMNa8bMk:sc:USPSPriority!94975!US!-1:rk:6:pf:0 I'm looking to convert a 5.25" bay, with one of these, for my drivepool SSDs. http://www.ipcdirect.net/ss-204-4-x-2-5-sas-6g-sata-iii-ssd-hdd-hot-swap-storage-enclosure-for-one-5-25-bay/ Edited November 12, 2018 by Doofus
Guest asrequested
It may actually be SATA not SAS. I'll find out when it arrives.
markyp 21
I wouldn’t have thought so but if I were you I’d spend a little more and get the 6gb version, just in case you want to expand some more...
Guest asrequested
Turns out, it has four SATA connections. The product title on IPC is wrong. https://www.amazon.com/SATA-Swap-Storage-Enclosure-SS-204/dp/B00IPXOMLM/ref=sr_1_91?m=ATAV5SZ5JVR3C&s=merchant-items&ie=UTF8&qid=1540880241&sr=1-91 Edited October 30, 2018 by Doofus
PenkethBoy 2063
The HP SAS expander works fine - i have 24 drives (HDD) hanging off mine with the correct break out cable it should work fine with that enclosure The HP card only needs power - does not need to be plugged into a m/b pcie slot if you are short of them I suspect the enclosure needs SAS drives internally even though it has sata connectors on the exterior
Guest asrequested
Yeah, I think you're right. Bizarre why they would be SAS internally but SATA externally.
PenkethBoy 2063
To use SAS drives in a "Normal" PC
Guest asrequested
I was looking at the description. It seems to suggest that it supports SAS and SATA.
PenkethBoy 2063
Actually reading the description again on the Amazon Link - my view is that it takes SAS or SATA drives internally and externally sata to say your motherboard / sata card / SAS card (with breakout cable)
Guest asrequested
Yeah, last night I was looking at some others. Thermaltake and Iceydock have some 6 drive versions. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MTK1GQ8/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_2?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1 Edited October 31, 2018 by Doofus
