Emby Beta for Roku won't Direct Play

The same issue I documented here for iOS - https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/58431-quality-settings/

I noticed today when testing that playback in the Emby Beta Roku app is Direct Streaming a HTTP link when the Emby non-Beta Roku app works as expected with Direct Play.  The reason for the Direct Streaming in the ffmpeg log states that the ContainerBitrateExceedsLimit.

Should upload the logs?

Is it a bug or intended?  Luke says playback for STRM files should be Direct Play if supported.  Is Direct Play being blocked in android/ios/emby apps?

The store apps do not direct play to remote urls. We can't verify the legality of the content, therefore streaming from them could put us at risk of violating app store policies.

However, just because it is not direct playing, that doesn't necessarily mean it will be transcoding. In many cases it will still be able to direct stream through your emby server.

With above explanation Emby should ALSO disable direct play for iptv channels, because Emby also can't verify, if those IPTV channels in the user m3u tuners are from LEGAL sources......

So I don't understand why Emby is so strict on strm and not on IPTV channels, because they are all from the same ballpark with mostly the same sources....

If you decide to apply rules, make those rules apply to ALL to be fair.

It's the same for both. if that's not happening then it's an error on the part of the app in question. How to report a problem. Thanks !

I'm not gonna report which Emby apps direct play IPTV, because that would piss off a lot of Emby users who use IPTV channels with Live TV...

So lets see what brings the future in the Emby apps.

Luke is already aware of the hole in at least the roku emby app that lets Direct Play passthrough when using the IPTV plugin. @@ebr

The non-store apps are OK so if you're seeing direct play in the browser then that is fine.

The Roku app version currently in review fixes this.

Good to see then, that same rules are applied to all content, because before, it seemed to me, that only strm content got the strict Emby treatment which I found not be be fair. So all good now.

It was just an error in the app and only worked if using the old plug-in (normal Live TV via m3u or Live TV plug-ins have always properly enforced this restriction).
