Ideal Emby player not found yet, your advice?

Hi all

For one year, I'm a emby premiere user. In that time, I was very happy with the server features, recognition of titles. So far, I have not found a player that meets my not so high requirements.

I have a setup that consists of a onkyo dts receiver with respective surround system and a flat screen TV connected by HDMI. Basically nothing spectacular. I had android desktop boxes, Notebooks and raspberry connected, no solution was really satisfying. Android boxes seemed to have a hardware hickup where display suddenly freezes, raspberry has no official release final software and issues with dark screen and windows notebook has some space noice and remote function issue. I'm just wondering how you guys connect your system.

Basically, I'm looking just for a simple out of pocket stable setup that I can turn on and off ideally with one remote. The android boxes (had 3 of them similar and a second different one) came pretty close but even being high powered processor, did fail. I don't want to test buy devices to find out that they do not work as expected. Was considering an Intel nuk but they are noisy and windows seems not to be the ideal platform for my needs. What do you have and use in a similar way? Thank you for your advice.

Cheers

Lati

I have 2 Shields and a MiBox.  All work flawlessly (aside from the documented DTS issue on the MiBox which is presumably fixed with Android 7), and I can confirm that CEC works prefectly on all of them.

I have 2 Mi Boxes and like them a lot. I was considering replacing one of them with a Shield. For those who have both, do you think i will see any differences ? During Emby Navigation, Media startup time...

Intel Nuc, pretty good and cheap for a small quiet and powerful pc / htpc.

I have a nuc as main PC, went noiseless with full passive body bought recentty. Which CPU do you use for emby playback, not Server? BTW, my nuc i7 I use as emby server.

I use it for emby playback, NUC6CAYH 8 gb ram, 4cores, noiseless completely, fast, added ssd,  works like a charm.

If you're using a NUC then the best player is Theater for windows desktop.

I have not noticed any difference regarding navigation or startup time.  The only real difference I see is the lack of updates on the MiBox (There have been like 4 Shield updates since the MiBox came out), and the built in ethernet port on the Shield.   And of course lack of HD audio on the MiBox, which is supposed to be fixed in the next update (whenever that will be).

Bottom line, if the price difference doesn't bother you, go Shield.  I'm not sure how much the MiBox is going to be supported in the near future once Android 7 gets pushed out (since there are rumors of a MiBox 4 coming out this year), and the Shield is not going anywhere and nVidia is fantastic supporting it.

I have one of the mi box 3's I like it so far. For some reason vudu was crashing a lot on me but after i removed that its been much more stable. Seems to direct play a lot of stuff which is great. I dont think i will transcode anything now.

No device is perfect but the Shield TV is the best overall for most people. I also use Roku's on my server as a more affordable option. They aren't quite as good as the Shield TV but work well for users with basic needs.

Thank you for this feedback, I will in that case consider a Shield but might also order a mi box as I have several TVs. Which emby client is running on the shield and the Mi box? Is it the TV client or the phone client or even both? Personally, I like the phone version the most.

So you can use the mobile app on the TV boxes? I guess you can side load them. I'd never thought about that. I wonder how well that would work with a remote? Probably the same....now I want to test that, lol. What about the switch to mpv? Are you guys still looking at dual players, so when using ATV it won't use mpv? My head just lit up with questions lol

I was referring to using the mobile app on a TV box. If the mobile app uses mpv and you side load it, there won't be any audio pass through. They were talking about having two players with a hard list of devices that specifies which devices use which player. I was trying to get some clarity on using the mobile app on a TV box.

The mobile app is not going to work well with a remote control.  You will want to use the TV app.  That's what it is designed for.

That's what I thought. But it's fun to mess with stuff :D
