Angelblue05 4130
Hi everyone, I have one simple question for you, if you could reply to this thread: If it's possible to switch the invocation name, what should it be? Remember it should be something simple, everyone can easily remember, one or two words and that won't clash with other skills of the same type. As you know, Emby is currently the invocation name, but since it's not a word, there's a learning curve before Alexa understands you 100%. I understand that can be frustrating for some, so I'm looking for some suggestions. I will clarify that at this time, there's no way to change the invocation name -- it's locked in, but I will reach out to customer support to see if something can be done. Thank you! arrbee99 1560
What does 'no way to change the invocation name' mean ? It has to be the same as the name of the program/skill ? You aren't allowed to change it from whatever it is to begin with ? Would it be possible to rename the whole ting to (excuse the originality) Ember ? (if 7illusions doesn't mind). Angelblue05 4130
What I mean by it is that it is locked in. That I can't modify the field... No, it doesn't have to be the same as the name of the program/skill. As I said these are the guideline for invocation name: Remember it should be something simple, everyone can easily remember, one or two words and that won't clash with other skills of the same type. arrbee99 1560
myemby (still get turned into m.b. or n.b. ?) mymed mybee membee. Am really not the artistic type obviously...oh please, just call it Colin
Angelblue05 4130
Maybe "my emby" or variations. I'll test how Alexa likes it. I'm afraid she'd hear "Miami" haha she does weird things with unknown words Colin is not easy to remember. arrbee99 1560
Was thinking membee might work better from the point of view it being mem-bee whereas my emby would turn into my-emm-bee (and hence my m.b. or my n.b. as mentioned). The Colin wasn't that serious, just underlining how I'm just not that imaginative...
Angelblue05 4130
I think membee is a little too far fetch to easily remember. If it were up to me, I'd use "my media" but then I feel everyone could do that and we'd have a clashing issue with other skills. I'll still try adding "my" in front to see if she react better. arrbee99 1560
Like this one... membee for embee. Nothing special about membee - like I say just trying to stop it getting turned into letters. Had a go at Emby Alexa skill this morning and it got Emby correct once, the other (20 ?) tries it was n.b.
Luke 37065
It's not possible to assign it mulitple names?
Angelblue05 4130
No. It's also not possible to define the phonetics either. It's not possible for users to "override" skill invocation words. I've seen a lot of FR regarding this, hopefully they will do something about this because it's a serious problem plaguing a lot of skills. That learning curve I mean. And they don't offer much information on it. Edited January 16, 2018 by Angelblue05
Guest asrequested
A long time ago, voice control was flirted with. And the name chosen, was Carter.
Swynol 375
now that my alexa has learnt and i think it helps that it now works with English UK, i like the current invocation name
ebr 14913
Isn't this going to "fix itself" over time? I'm very wary of making it anything other than our actual name and, it seems, adding another word in front of a word it has a hard time recognizing now is not going to make it any better at recognizing that word... Angelblue05 4130
Well that's what I believe, but it's been a while now. I don't see why it would be harder, at least it would have an anchor to a real word, making it easier to map to emby perhaps. Anyway, I've posted on the Alexa forums. We'll see what they say. They are pretty slow so it might be a week before I get a reply. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Edited January 16, 2018 by Angelblue05
Guest asrequested
I'm retraining her, again Am I correct in thinking that any time the skill is disabled (for whatever reason), I have to retrain her? I think this is about the 8th time.
Guest asrequested
Couldn't there be a workaround? Like we choose wahtever word we want, but the skill internally uses Emby? Emby being the default, of course, but have a field where we type in a word that we would say, but the skill always uses Emby. Or would that be completely redundant? Guest asrequested
Try saying "Alexa, ask emby to resume"
Guest asrequested
I mean, the whole point is to use natural speech. Not try different words and different combinations of words, to figure out which one works. I think I'm over it. I'm not going retrain her, again. I'm wasting too much time on it. SkyBehind 23
I've had the same trouble. I can name my own devices with my home automation software. I've found more syllables work better. Like for my downstairs heat, I called it downstairs heater, it seems to work better than downstairs heat. I think the invocation of "media browser" would probably be very easily detected, plus that's how the whole Emby name came about anyway, if I'm not mistaken... so it kinda pays homage.

I think the part you are missing here is the skill has no control over this. Angel tried to explain this above but, our skill (that is, our code) will only ever be invoked if the Alexa system itself can understand you well enough to know that it needs to call us. If Alexa doesn't properly interpret you saying "Emby" our skill is never called so there is absolutely nothing the skill can do about that .

Yes, which is why, if its possible, changing to membee (or whatever), would hopefully stop it being turned into m.b. or n.b. because mem would hopefully be understood as not m or n, if that makes sense. I was responding directly to Doofus who suggested we change our code to account for these problems. However, as for your suggestion - how do we explain to people that they need to mumble our name in order to get our skill to work . I just don't see that as a workable solution. It is unfortunate that our unique name causes this type of issue but, hopefully, over time it will get better.

It might improve things it might not.

Meaning that you can't add an intermediary.
