Feature Request - Native Support for Streaming Subscriptions

Recommended Posts

I'm currently a WMC7 user with Emby Classic (and have been for years). I subscribe to Time Warner Spectrum and have cable card.  Pretty soon we will be physically moving to a new location and from what I understand the area we're headed to will not have access to a cablecard based TV server system (neither cable or FIOS).  I will be relegated to either satellite service for TV or DSL for internet.  For this reason I am considering evaluation of one of the new subscription streaming services such as Directv Now, PlayStation Vue or SlingTV.  I haven't decided which but I was wondering if there was any consideration in the Emby camp being given to natively supporting these type paid services inside of Emby Server and Client?

If no one has already asked then I ask that it be evaluated and possibly put on the development roadmap.

Additionally, of the three services listed, only PlayStation Vue currently has Cloud DVR.  The other two (Directv Now & SlingTV) do not have a native DVR capability.  Both can be recorded using a separate service within PlayOn called PlayLater, but as you can guess, the more people involved with getting something like that done leaves a lot to be desired with the functionality.  So if Emby would consider native support for paid streaming services I would also ask that you simultaneously consider native support for DVR from the services inside the server application.

Thanks for your consideration and let me know what I can do to help.

I believe the issue is, that most of these services wont allow a client other than theirs to stream the media...  To stop things like media servers from redistributing their service.  That's not to say it can not be done, but unless the services Terms grant that ability, I highly doubt emby would do it.   It would be sweet to see Directv Now or Vue on emby though...

EDIT:  After reading the Playstation Vue TOS it looks like you could make a web based requests legally, they don't limit or bind you to a specific browser or web request method.  A PC/WEB client is an Authorized Streaming Device, and a PC runs emby.  Maybe that is something the emby guys can look into...

By the way, Sling TV does have a DVR service but it costs an additional 5.00 per month. PS Vue does not charge extra. DirectTV Now has a DVR service in Beta at the moment.

The Kodi app does have a PS Vue App in their repository that works pretty well.

Do you know if the Directv Now DVR beta is a widespread public one or us one of those limited ... for special customers only type? I may be enticed to try that if it's open to everyone.

The last I read it is currently by invite only on a limited basis.

Thanks to all who chimed in. My goal in this would not be to circumvent the subscribees method of delivery but only to have it integrate into the Emby interface as a one-stop-shop integration GUI. And DVR is only requested because of the literature I could find so far only showed Playstation Vue as the only instantation of an integrated DVR. Hince the hint toward PlayOn. But if all of the services are going to have their own built in DVR that would be fine too as long as the total integration package is addressable inside of Emby.

What I'm trying to avoid is having to switch between multiple apps just to get to all of my media. If one is using Roku as an example and they had a Directv Now account, there would need to be a physical switch in application to go from say Live OTA TV inside of Emby to Directv Now. I would have to exit Emby and then go to Directv Now as opposed to how WMC7 now works where OTA TV is integrated with cable card tv inside the same app. I'm literally trying to get back to the same functionality that I currently have with WMC7 in an environment where I will no longer have access to cable card and cable tv.

I will already have my OTA TV covered by way of Emby but cable like tv is becoming difficult to obtain. Especially if you physically do not have access to cable TV. Streaming subscriptions and IPTV seem to be able to fill the gap but they too are proving difficult to implement in an integrated way.

We understand what you are asking for and would love to provide it.  However, the providers of the content are not likely to want us to do that.  As it becomes possible, we will definitely look into it though.
