Condor_Toronto 1
I am running the latest Emby Server (Version 3.0.5781.7) on my Samsung TV (Samsung PN64F8500) - the App version is 1.0 (I tried 3-4 different earlier versions as well 0.5-1.0v). If I configure the Subtitles app setting: Default First of all, what does default mean?Regardless, if I start playing a video (MKV 1080p - or any other resolution) and select a subtitle - it will not show any subtitles. If I configure the Subtitles app setting: Always play - the app will hung/freeze (I need to turn off my TV) when I press play on a video. Am I doing something wrong, or is the subtitle support still not fully developed? What setting should I use? Most of my movies have SRT embedded into MKV or have a separate external file. Thank you for any help.
CBers 6771
I believe DEFAULT will honour the subtitle setting you have set under your Emby account on the server. You can turn subtitles on/off via the Tools menu in the app.
Solution SamES 890 Posted December 18, 2015 Solution Share Posted December 18, 2015 I believe DEFAULT will honour the subtitle setting you have set under your Emby account on the server. I think actually it always honours the server setting. Default should mean it plays the track marked as default in the movie container. I think if there is no default sub marked, it will play the first sub. I normally have this set to forced subs only
Condor_Toronto 1
Well, the bigger issue is - when I select a subtitle during playback (srt file or srt in the MKV) it simply does not work - no subtitle shows - the App subtitle is configured to Default, When I select Always Play - the app freeze and I need to turn off the TV. FrostByte 5049
Ya, that shouldn't be happening when manually selecting a subtitle. I believe cmcg has hammered out all the subtitle issues he is aware of, but you never know. My setting is Always Play subtitles also. However, I mux out all but any non-English part subtitles and only keep external subtitles for non-English parts also so the most I will ever have is just the one. Is your server OS Windows or Unix based? We had an issue with NAS (Unix) servers which was recently fixed is why All srt subtitles should be UTF-8 of course. If you can, could you upload a copy of an external srt which isn't working to a file share site (OneDrive, etc). I would be willing to play the srt on my system to see if I have the same issue. All my media is in mkv/1080p format also
Condor_Toronto 1
Well, most of my subtitles are downloaded automatically by Emby, so whether they are UTF-8 or ANSI I guess it is controlled by opensubtitles.org and I am not sure - do you think this might be a cause? Can I configure EMBY for UTF-8? My servers are Server 2012 R2 and Server 2016 both running as service. Please take note that this only happens when they play as 'Direct Streaming', not when transcoding. If you still want to try, please get any srt subtitle from opensubtitles.org - I have tried dozens different ones and the app always freeze. If you still prefer I share my own srt, please let me know, but really all I would like from you is to tell me if you are able to play ANY srt (embed or external) in MKV, when 'Direct Streamed' and the App subtitle setting configured as Default - in this scenario my app always freeze. Thank you very much for your help.
FrostByte 5049
If Emby is downloading them then they should be UTF-8. All my files Direct Stream. I only download or encode files which can DS and play natively on my TV (meaning they fall into the supported parameters a stated in the back of the users manual). They are all mkv with DTS, PCM, AC3, etc with total bitrates ranging from 10 - 25 Mbps. My subtitles are almost all external srt and I use the naming convention "Movie title (year).eng.forced.srt" matching the "Movie title (year).mkv" title of the movie/show. As I'm typing I'm watching Das Boot after changing my settings to English and Default. The file is Direct Streaming
Condor_Toronto 1
Well, everything you just mentioned exactly matches my setup with one small difference, you mentioned you format your files as: "Movie title (year).eng.FORCED.srt" - I don't have the "forced" suffix - I will try that. Do you think this might make a difference? Why would it?
FrostByte 5049
It's just like marking an internal subtitle forced. You could try, but I wouldn't hold my breath that is it Ya, that is what's so weird is that your setup sounds exactly like mine. Maybe post the mediainfo if you have that program, or from the webclient. I'm just grasping at straws at what the difference is until someone smarter comes back I'm going out here in a few minutes, but will download a couple srt files from that source when I get back and see if I can duplicate this somehow. FrostByte 5049
I just downloaded a subtitle from that site and it worked without any issues.
cmcg 874
Default = Subtitles matching the language preference will be loaded when the audio is in a foreign language. Sorry if the client doesn't show that explanation. I'll add it in the next update.
Condor_Toronto 1
I just downloaded a subtitle from that site and it worked without any issues. Really? Well, I guess it must be either specific to my TV model or my setup. Did you try it without the "forced" suffix as well? BTW - do you have any suggestions what different setting (server or app?) should I try?
FrostByte 5049
I did not try it without forced, but can try a few more scenerios to see if I can duplicate.
FrostByte 5049
Subtitles are still working for me without the "forced" What TV do you have? and could you please post a screeshot of the mediainfo from the webclient? Did 1
Heya. I've been trying to nail down my issue with the app hanging whenever I started certain videos. I just now realised that I have used the "Always Play" setting for subtitles (thank you Condor_Toronto) and changing it to "None" made all of those videos play again. Earlier, I fixed it by lowering the maximum bitrate so that I forced transcoding.I now realise that all videos that did not work had subtitles in many (5+) languages. I grabbed MediaInfo from two movies that I had the issue with (I have more, though): The Croods Text #1ID : 3Format : UTF-8Codec ID : S_TEXT/UTF8Codec ID/Info : UTF-8 Plain TextLanguage : EnglishDefault : YesForced : NoText #2ID : 4Format : UTF-8Codec ID : S_TEXT/UTF8Codec ID/Info : UTF-8 Plain TextLanguage : SpanishDefault : NoForced : NoText #3ID : 5Format : UTF-8Codec ID : S_TEXT/UTF8Codec ID/Info : UTF-8 Plain TextLanguage : PortugueseDefault : NoForced : NoText #4ID : 6Format : UTF-8Codec ID : S_TEXT/UTF8Codec ID/Info : UTF-8 Plain TextLanguage : HungarianDefault : NoForced : NoText #5ID : 7Format : UTF-8Codec ID : S_TEXT/UTF8Codec ID/Info : UTF-8 Plain TextLanguage : SlovenianDefault : NoForced : NoText #6ID : 8Format : UTF-8Codec ID : S_TEXT/UTF8Codec ID/Info : UTF-8 Plain TextLanguage : IndonesianDefault : NoForced : NoText #7ID : 9Format : UTF-8Codec ID : S_TEXT/UTF8Codec ID/Info : UTF-8 Plain TextLanguage : CroatianDefault : NoForced : NoText #8ID : 10Format : UTF-8Codec ID : S_TEXT/UTF8Codec ID/Info : UTF-8 Plain TextLanguage : CzechDefault : NoForced : NoText #9ID : 11Format : UTF-8Codec ID : S_TEXT/UTF8Codec ID/Info : UTF-8 Plain TextLanguage : MalayDefault : NoForced : NoText #10ID : 12Format : UTF-8Codec ID : S_TEXT/UTF8Codec ID/Info : UTF-8 Plain TextLanguage : SlovakDefault : NoForced : NoText #11ID : 13Format : UTF-8Codec ID : S_TEXT/UTF8Codec ID/Info : UTF-8 Plain TextLanguage : VietnameseDefault : NoForced : No Ant-Man Text #1ID : 4Format : UTF-8Codec ID : S_TEXT/UTF8Codec ID/Info : UTF-8 Plain TextLanguage : CroatianDefault : NoForced : NoText #2ID : 5Format : UTF-8Codec ID : S_TEXT/UTF8Codec ID/Info : UTF-8 Plain TextLanguage : CzechDefault : NoForced : NoText #3ID : 6Format : UTF-8Codec ID : S_TEXT/UTF8Codec ID/Info : UTF-8 Plain TextLanguage : DanishDefault : NoForced : NoText #4ID : 7Format : UTF-8Codec ID : S_TEXT/UTF8Codec ID/Info : UTF-8 Plain TextLanguage : DutchDefault : NoForced : NoText #5ID : 8Format : UTF-8Codec ID : S_TEXT/UTF8Codec ID/Info : UTF-8 Plain TextLanguage : EnglishDefault : NoForced : NoText #6ID : 9Format : UTF-8Codec ID : S_TEXT/UTF8Codec ID/Info : UTF-8 Plain TextTitle : CommentaryLanguage : EnglishDefault : NoForced : NoText #7ID : 10Format : UTF-8Codec ID : S_TEXT/UTF8Codec ID/Info : UTF-8 Plain TextLanguage : FinnishDefault : NoForced : NoText #8ID : 11Format : UTF-8Codec ID : S_TEXT/UTF8Codec ID/Info : UTF-8 Plain TextLanguage : FrenchDefault : NoForced : NoText #9ID : 12Format : UTF-8Codec ID : S_TEXT/UTF8Codec ID/Info : UTF-8 Plain TextLanguage : GreekDefault : NoForced : NoText #10ID : 13Format : UTF-8Codec ID : S_TEXT/UTF8Codec ID/Info : UTF-8 Plain TextLanguage : NorwegianDefault : NoForced : NoText #11ID : 14Format : UTF-8Codec ID : S_TEXT/UTF8Codec ID/Info : UTF-8 Plain TextLanguage : PolishDefault : NoForced : NoText #12ID : 15Format : UTF-8Codec ID : S_TEXT/UTF8Codec ID/Info : UTF-8 Plain TextTitle : BrazilianLanguage : PortugueseDefault : NoForced : NoText #13ID : 16Format : UTF-8Codec ID : S_TEXT/UTF8Codec ID/Info : UTF-8 Plain TextTitle : IberianLanguage : PortugueseDefault : NoForced : NoText #14ID : 17Format : UTF-8Codec ID : S_TEXT/UTF8Codec ID/Info : UTF-8 Plain TextLanguage : RomanianDefault : NoForced : NoText #15ID : 18Format : UTF-8Codec ID : S_TEXT/UTF8Codec ID/Info : UTF-8 Plain TextLanguage : RussianDefault : NoForced : NoText #16ID : 19Format : UTF-8Codec ID : S_TEXT/UTF8Codec ID/Info : UTF-8 Plain TextLanguage : SerbianDefault : NoForced : NoText #17ID : 20Format : UTF-8Codec ID : S_TEXT/UTF8Codec ID/Info : UTF-8 Plain TextLanguage : SpanishDefault : NoForced : NoText #18ID : 21Format : UTF-8Codec ID : S_TEXT/UTF8Codec ID/Info : UTF-8 Plain TextLanguage : SwedishDefault : NoForced : NoText #19ID : 22Format : UTF-8Codec ID : S_TEXT/UTF8Codec ID/Info : UTF-8 Plain TextLanguage : TurkishDefault : NoForced : NoText #20ID : 23Format : UTF-8Codec ID : S_TEXT/UTF8Codec ID/Info : UTF-8 Plain TextLanguage : VietnameseDefault : NoForced : No The playback always hangs at the "Start Subtitle Processing" stage according to the log. FrostByte 5049
Have you seen this in the alpha releases of server? Not sure if that would also help in your case or not http://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/29022-305838-subtitles/ Edit: either way the app should probably handle the issue better and not lock up your tv Edited December 27, 2015 by FrostByte
CBers 6771
@@Did - both @@FrostByte and myself have F8000 TV's and I think we both have the subtitles setting set to Forced. I don't have an issue turning subs on and off. Are your subs internal or external? Do you have your subtitles language set to your language?
FrostByte 5049
My subtitle settings are English and set to Always Play (Default also works) and my subtitles automatically play with no input needed and with no issues. However, I only ever have just one subtitle and just for non-English parts. All my subtitles are also external and named "movie title (year).eng.forced.srt" if I have one. They shouldn't have to be external though. What you have shouldn't be an issue Like CBers mentioned try setting your language first. Then if it still doesn't work remux your video marking the appropriate internal subtitle as forced and/or default and move it to the first/top subtitle location (though it looks like it may be set that way already in your first video). Do you need all those subtitles? Maybe remux and take out all but the one subtitle in one of the files as a test and try again. If you get it working let us know, it will help figure out what is wrong with subtitles so a fix can be made Edited December 27, 2015 by FrostByte

jeflatt 6
I'm having a similar issue with subtitles. The forced subtitles seem to be very hit and miss. Some play, some don't. I recently put a movie in my library that has a German audio track. It has English subtitles. On the server, I have the subtitles set to "smart" so that it should, in theory, play the subtitles. That didn't work though, and the subtitles wouldn't play on Samsung or on the Emby server. I went into the .mkv file (the subtitles are internal) and I changed the header info so that the subtitles are designated as forced now. When I did that, the subtitles would play on the Emby server, but they still don't play on Samsung. I have the subtitles set to default on the "server settings" in Samsung. I have also tried setting it to "always play" and still no subtitles at all. I have my default language set to English, and the metadata on the file says it's German audio. So on the surface, this would seem to be the situation where it would play the subtitles even if they weren't forced, but they didn't. I've tried every combination of settings I can think of, but have yet to get any subtitles to play in Samsung. P.S. In reading the previous posts, I tried to use the "tools" to change the subtitles settings during playback, but I don't have any "tools" to use. The only controls available during playback are "chapters/position". If there is a way to enter the tools menu during playback, I can't find it. FrostByte 5049
What format are your internal subtitles? Are they srt? Just asking because the app doesn't support every format which the server does For some reason the app isn't seeing your subtitles if you're only seeing chapters and position (you should see "Subtitles" right in between those others). Maybe try extracting the subtitles making sure it's UTF-8 and srt and naming the file movie name.eng.forced.srt Refresh the movie and once the external subtitle is recognized by the webclient try again

FrostByte 5049
I believe that is the problem then. It has to do with the way the app sends a second stream at the bottom of your screen. Graphical subtitles don't work at this time. I know srt subtitles work, not sure which others. You could try adding a srt to one movie to see if it works. It should work internal or external
jeflatt 6
Well that explains why it wasn't working. I used an extractor program to pull the VobSub file out of the .mkv and make an external .sub file. Then I used a conversion program to turn that into an .srt file. Now the subtitles are working just fine. I tried to use the standard files that Emby downloads automatically (from opensubtitles.org) but they were all wrong. Missing things and/or out of sync. So I had to create my own in the end. A bit tedious with the number of OCR errors, but it did work in the end. Thanks for explaining why the .sub files weren't working.
