silver_2000 3
Looking for self help options for slowness on Roku and LG tv app We have wired connection to Synology running emby, with some libraries stored on a second Synology. When I look at the Synology resource monitor neither shows much cpu, network or disk usage to explain the slowness. I do widows support and am used to looking at logs and performance to find issues. I know I need to upload logs. I wish the logs were easier to interpret for humans. Anyone have any ideas ? We are considering moving emby back to an older HP server I have here to leverage faster processor ...
Carlo 4331
Hi logs shouldn't be too hard. Try this, make sure you don't have debug turned on (Log menu) as that writes a lot of info. Use debug logging only when trying to drill down into something specific or for short periods of time. So with that off, go to scheduled tasks and rotate the log file. That will give you a fresh log. Try playing back something on the LG or Roku then return to the Emby dashboard and bring up the logs menu. Do you see logs starting with ffmpeg? If so that means the file wasn't able to be direct played and Emby had to try and remux or transcode it. The rest of the filename after ffmpeg will give you a clue. Now you look at a short server log to see if any errors show up which should be easy to spot. If there are ffmpeg files these will normally tell the tail just scrolling to the bottom to see how it ended. Of course you can attach the file(s) here and we can help you interpret them as well. silver_2000 3
THANKS for the quick reply The SMB paths are used in connecting to the libraries on the second synology 192.168.10.224 was a dhcp address assigned to the 2nd synology in error. That wat corrected last week. The connection issues and buffering predate that change. I made the change to try to help resolve the buffering hanging issue. The bonded IP of the 2nd Synology is 192.168.10.32 - I cant figure out where the 1st synology is storing the .224 address. Its not in DNS, and Ive rebooted the Firewall ( dns ) and both synologys since the change. Because it bears repeating the buffering was happening when the synology was reachable via .224 Is there a recommended way to connect the libraries that doesnt use SMB ? the thumbnails seem to be an issue in the logs - Can we disable them ? Luke 37253
You can try it this way: Then add the local path to Emby Server instead of the SMB path. Please let us know if this helps. Thanks.
silver_2000 3
trying this now - down side is that changing the path to the folder causes the media to rescan all over again - takes a LONG time thanks again for the quick responses
Carlo 4331
Yes it does but if you have the graphics and NFO saved with your media you can go into each library and remove all meta-data providers except the NFO and it will reload them much faster! silver_2000 3
Many, mostly the TV shows which are what is on the second Synology. Not all - Let me collect some more specific data. I know that it occurs with MANY of the files but not all. I was wrong about the roku stick working - it buffered it just took longer the 2 roku ultras buffer at exactly the =same spot on the videos Edited December 21, 2021 by silver_2000

Carlo 4331
All the Rokus and server on the same LAN? (ie your home network) Do you have everything plugged into Ethernet? If not what devices are on wifi? If you see the same problem with multiple devices on the same files, that could be an indication there is something wrong with the media. Could just be the header info is off a bit. A good of this would be to run one problem file through mkvtoolnix (I think that's the one) to remux the file. Remux the file outside of your Emby media folder then put the new version back on top of the old one, after you verified it plays with VLC or some other program. But it is only 1M ("Bitrate":1219975), But guessing you would like to know if transcoding resolves the issue. That is why I asked if Playback correction makes any difference. If it is everything on the second nas then I would say there is a man in the middle effect (server to nas, nas back to server, server to client)
Carlo 4331
That's possible. One test would be to copy the files to a new test library on the first NAS and try playing them back that way.

silver_2000 3
We are finding some details on the videos that get stuck buffering. Apparently one difference is that the TV episodes that buffer at 33% are encoded w different audio and there was no thumbnail, on each of the episodes where there's no thumbnail, The audio is "CPE EAC3 2 channel default." The web browser plays fine the Roku is having issues. The LG app seems to like the audio changes better than the Roku ...
