Exciting Additions Coming Soon in Emby Server 3.6

Hi Team,

As many of you know, we are currently working hard on getting Emby Server 3.6 released. We would like to take this opportunity to give you some advance information on some of the changes that are coming.

New Levels of Performance
Emby Server, as well as all Emby apps will perform faster than ever. The server can now easily scale to massive libraries, and the faster speed and reduced loading times will probably be the first thing you'll notice after upgrading to 3.6.

Live TV Guide Data Now Included with Premiere
Emby will be gradually switching from Schedules Direct to Gracenote for Live TV guide data. What does this mean? This means if you're in the USA, Canada or UK, you'll no longer need to setup an account with another website nor pay someone else for this data. You'll simply enter your zip code into Emby, select your channel lineup, and we'll handle retrieving your guide data.

We believe this will provide a better experience for Emby users with fewer setup steps. The data from Gracenote is also quite a bit richer, and we will be looking at how we can take advantage of that to bring new Live TV features to Emby. Going forward, Live TV will require Emby Premiere in the web app, where previously this was not the case.

How to Migrate From Schedules Direct

If you are setting up the server fresh, then you should use our new Emby guide provider, which will be the default. If you are already using Schedules Direct, then you can continue to use it through the remainder of your Schedules Direct subscription. Schedules Direct has pledged to continue to honor your subscriptions, and we thank them for that.

New and Improved Hardware Acceleration
We have revamped hardware acceleration on all supported platforms for Emby Server. This includes Windows, Linux, Android, NAS devices, and MacOS. We've added some sophisticated hardware detection that allows us to know exactly what your hardware supports, and with this information we can fine tune the transcoding processes to get the most out of your hardware.

This has truly been a massive effort and will continue to be a massive effort going forward into the future. For this reason, hardware acceleration will now require Emby Premiere on most platforms. On some platforms such as Nvidia Shield and certain NAS devices, it will be included freely out of the box.

A Long List of Improvements and Bug Fixes
Stay tuned for the announcement of Emby Server 3.6. It is packed with new features, bug fixes, improvements to existing features, and more.

So we are losing HW acceleration with this release for most platforms? Is Odroid XU4 Exynos still going to be supported in the community version? After all, the addition of this platform was a community effort.

so if I remain on Version 3.5.3.0 I will retain free live TV via the web app?

I haven't looked at functionality yet in the beta, but my Live TV setup has some complexity in that some channels are locally originated channels that I produce my own guide data for (xml), some are in my local ZIP/DMA, and some are in several other ZIP/DMAs around the country.  And possibly adding some from other countries.  Will there still be flexibility to cover all these bases?

I've been running 3.6 betas and the UI responsiveness is an outstanding improvement! Congrats to the Emby team!

So is this the first release that is going to be Non Open Source? There seems to be some confusion as what is going on here but features alone are not going to make me upgrade if I can not longer trust the software because I cannot view or  look at the source. Emby has been pretty great so far but part of the problem has always been resolving issues in a timely manner. So if you have been busy adding new locked down features rather than chasing existing bugs it explains a lot about what has been going on.

I am a lifetime member and so that money is gone as far as I am concerned but I will not upgrade unless I get clear statements about what the intended future is for this product and whether I am comfortable with using or promoting it like I have done.

Yeah I'm looking forward to this release. I *just* moved my Emby to a new server build (FX-8320e to Ryzen 7 1700x) and doing the schedule via XML on the FX server wouldn't give me pictures with the programs in the guide that I believe I had with Schedules Direct. So looking forward to that. Are we looking at this update arriving before Christmas?

Is there anyway us Premier users can get more access to disable unwanted metadata entries or features in future builds?

I'm constantly having to fight with the metadata scrapper to remove unwanted entries.

I just installed emby for the first time today, and thought the process of getting a guide setup was kinda painful, so I'm happy to see this - and also happy that I didn't sign up for an annual guide subscription! Has a release date been announced?

I have not seen an estimate on a release date. They normally have not given release dates that i have seen but i have only been using emby for i think 6 or 7 months. I look forward to it myself.

Yes folks, it's snappier than ever among other things. I can assure you.

Cheers for the great dev team, @Luke among all others. Special thanks to @solabc16 as well for always being on top of the hour regarding our Synology BETA testing group.

Hi everybody

I have just uninstalled Plex from my server following their recent disastrous update and have installed Emby.

So far, I am most impressed. For a start I can find my content easily again and Emby doesn't, like Plex now does, lump all my TV content into one category

It is such a joy to, once again, see my different categories laid out very clearly in front of me on my home page.

Just one thing, I don't know if this is the place to ask but........   Is there a way to have the shows always show the external srt subtitle (exactly the same name as video file) instead of starting show then down arrow on remote then select subtitle and restart?

I have, without success tried  renaming the srt files as

  xxxxxxxxx.default.srt
  xxxxxxxxx.forced.srt
  xxxxxxxxx.foreign.srt

Thanks in advance

You need to access your user settings (in the Web UI, click your avatar in the top right [between the magnifying glass (search) and the gear (server settings)].

There should be a Subtitles option in your user settings where you can specify: if subtitles load by default; if so which one does; and their size and font.

Any ideas when this is being released?

Really want it but don't want to jump until the update is available directly on the server.
