Roku look and feel

Hello

New to Emby, switch from Plex and really pleased I did. Main driver was the UK Freeview guide data is way better here with Emby.

I have a LG Smart TV and the interface is smart and looks great. However I have another TV with a Roku device and the look and feel of the Roku app is a bit dated and clunky, no where near as slick.

Do we know if there an update coming to Roku to bring it in line with the look and feel of the LG app?

Hi.  Can you please give us some examples of exactly what you are talking about?

Hello

For example the menus and player interface. My LG TV is quite slow (generally) but the Emby interface is fast and looks great on it.

Roku looks dated, and seems very slow compared to other Roku apps.

Thanks!

Hi.  That settings screen is just a standard layout in Roku apps so we use that.

As for the playback interface, that is Roku's interface during seeking.  Try pressing the down arrow during playback and you should get an OSD much like all the other apps.

This may be a misunderstanding of how the Roku works. If you press fast-fwd multiple times it changes from 1x to 2x to 3x and back to 1x. So while on that transport bar Roku provides you can move faster. You also appear to be missing BIF files generated for your media. If you had these a different presentation would appear to let you navigate which is much better than the static video image with a transport bar.

How slow the Roku is depends entirely on your choice of Roku. The Roku ultra is not slow by any means. I can wring quite a bit of animations out of it before I can see it suffering. I rarely have to tailor back being elaborate on the Roku because of its limitations in fact quite the opposite. We have to tame down what the Roku can do a little bit to keep it in line with other apps. It is other platforms having problems doing what Roku can do. Eventually perhaps some of the unique things Roku can do so elegantly we can work into the app. Time will tell.

Just recently we added the translations and full Roboto font into the Roku app. This changed some of the screens and make them now universal for any language. In doing this some may need a little work, a little love, a little bit of attention. We can increase the awesome on those screens but we cannot make it more complicated. On Roku it is simple for a reason. But in no way does this infer it is slow or incapable.

Please give us some feedback on where you feel exactly it is slow. The screen shots help a bit illustrate some points but not an overall feel for what you mean. Where is it slow? To start playing video? To start playing audio? When it navigates to detail screens? Is it slow all over? Knowing where new users feel pain points will help us sand down these rough corners. Do you have time to help us? We just need a few answers. Thanks. ^_^

So pleased with Emby! Works well and the community is great! So pleased I left Plex behind!

OK, Roku does seem to vary by device, in surprising ways. I have an old Roku 2 now and it is so much better than the current Roku Express (UK versions). I will spend a few more days using this Roku 2 and my LG TV and report back! Thank you!

Which Roku 2 do you have? There have been several.

If what  you have is the old Rouu 2 XS or XD then it is very surprising that you are finding it fast at all. However if it is the newest Roku 2, (Given that you are in the UK this is probable) released at the same time as the Roku 3, then what you have is a superior, vastly superior, Roku 2 to the Express which is the bottom of the line of the current Rokus. It is VERY slow. The newer Roku 2 vs the Express is like comparing a 1969 Volkswagen to a Roles Royce.

I would junk the Express and get a Roku that is up to the tasks that a streaming device should have.

Since you are in the UK you are probably limited to the Premier as I do not think the Ultra is sold there. I have Ultras and I am very happy. In most ways the Ultras are the best streamers I own and I have Rokus, (Ultras, and 3s and an express {the Express is sitting in a drawer} ) Shield TV, Fire TV and a generic Android box.
