arrbee99 1561
So today my 4K movie collection grew infinity bigger than it was previously i.e. its moved from 0 to 1. I therefore have a question or two - Any idea roughly how big a 4K movie is once ripped to HDD ? Is it recommended to compress them ? If so, do I still get the benefits of HDR etc ? Any Handbrake settings recommended ? (storage is cheap but am guessing these things vacuum it up like there's no tomorrow).
PenkethBoy 2063
40 to 60GB its already compressed - but with a high bit rate you could use HB - but you are only going to reduce the quality and might also remove the HDR - so not sure why you would want to do that
arrbee99 1561
Thanks for the info. Its not that I want to compress, but if compressing saves space without too much of an effect then I might as well. OTOH if has a fairly major impact, then I won't. Just trying to find some sort of consensus.
Luke 37133
Why not use our convert media feature? This is exactly what it's made to do.
arrbee99 1561
I could, am just trying to get an idea of the general principle - compress or not ? can you compress to half the size and not notice the difference, will you wreck it with compression and its only 5% smaller anyway... Luke 37133
If you're only watching on a 1080p screen then yes you probably can and not notice.
arrbee99 1561
We've got a 4K Sony TV. Saw something about Handbrake not being the best if I wanted to compress 4K stuff, something about it using 8-bit video but 4K HDR whatever uses 10-bit. Guess that makes sense to someone. Luke 37133
If you have a 4k TV then i would just keep the files as they are.
