Tv series - custom episode order

I apologise if this is an faq but I can’t work it out...

Often, I want Emby to play a tv series in a particular order, which is different from the transmission order used by the online databases.

 

So I want to say, in my system this is S02E01 but get the metadata from S02E04 online. Or even occasionally a different series block i.e. for me this is S01E25 but online it’s S02E01.

 

Am I making sense? I’ve tried hacking around with the metadata but only succeeded in confusing Emby I think.i.e. I can make it play in a different order but then I get wrong metadata.

Because I want to see the ‘correct’ (according to me!!!) episode order, and I name the episodes accordingly. I then want to assign a mapping to the external db so I still get correct metadata.

 

There are all sorts of reasons this happens, even that the tv company transmitted the episodes in the wrong order by mistake, and then this order gets immortalised. More often, the tv databases are simply wrong. I want internally to organise the episodes my way, not have errors forced on me to match some external DB.

I think that's unautomatable, or you need new platform: Emby Psychic.

Anyway, I reckon he doesn't mind doing manual labor, shouldn't his wishes be fulfilled by editing Metadata and locking the item afterwards?

Let me rephrase this:

Once you adjust, for example, episode number to your liking and your item is locked, what are you doing afterwards that gets you wrong metadata if the correct one is already there?

You need to separate the internal series data and the mapping to the external supposed-standard data. I think it would be quite easy to program. Without this separation the problem is insoluble.

But anyway I don’t think I’m getting anywhere so I’ll stop now!

I think you're doing it backwards, let me try and guess workflow:

1. Regardless where do you obtain your media from, I assume it is with its "original" filename, i.e. the one that conforms to some external db (for example tvdb.com)

2. As that seems the reason you don't agree with, you rename it and import it to Emby

3. You get Metadata for that "renamed" episode, which is obviously incorrect

4. You then try to obtain correct metadata

 

What you should do:

1. Obtain the file

2. Import THAT file into Emby and obtain correct Metadata

3. Adjust Season and Episode number to your liking

4. Lock item

For testing purposes, I just assigned an episode number HIGHER than last episode available and even that works like a charm, same Metadata different episode. Works for same numbered episodes as well, Emby shows them all as I want it.

No it doesnt conform to the external db’s; right from the start I have ‘different’ info on a lot of stuff. I dont rename it I import it to emby as it stands and then try to fix up the Emby metadata.

I know what you are saying, I was trying some stuff like that. There’s no general solution without having two id’s, one internal, one external. Without that, something will always go wrong. The Tatort problem is a bit similar, there’s no real agreed external id for a given episode. (In fact each City has its own run - It’s actually Tatort (crimescene) Frankfurt, Tatort Hamburg, etc) So you need to create your own internal id.

Then, unfortunately, I think you're out of luck, I can hardly imagine an option like that showing in any app, not only Emby. Too bad.
