mikeraburn 60
Is it just me or does it seem to take a mere extra time to load the file before playback begins? When I noticed it it acted like it was going to be transcoding but it isn't, so that's a good thing. I've noticed this since the new server update with Emby Beta. (Synology DS216play) Once it gets going it is flawless as usual, nothing ever transcodes for me anymore. None issue but I am just asking if it is me being impatient. speechles 1917
@@mikeraburn When did you start to notice this? very recently in the Roku beta? I think I know what it is and to confirm my suspicion you are not using theme music and have the "Play Theme Music" setting in the app set to OFF? If you say YES to the above question I already have a fix in the works waiting to speed that part up.

Theme music shouldn't have any effect on playback starting, correct?
mikeraburn 60
@speechless No theme music, ever, BUT I will check the settings and VERIFY it is STILL OFF. Yes, JUST very RECENT in the Roku Beta @@Luke I really do not have an example to show right now. It is just a "longer" time frame to get the file playing. More of an observation rather than a critical issue.

speechles 1917
If it is slow there it is something on the network/congestion or some other factor coming into play. I don't think it is the app doing anything differently. I did notice we always went to stop theme music before playback even if theme music wasnt turned on in settings. This can introduce a few milliseconds of lag when starting an item if you arent using theme music. I thought you were some alien or hyper evolved human being able to detect even minor inconsistencies in time. Those beings would be capable of understanding and using Emby. Maybe even been doing it for years and has a username on these forums. You never know. ^_~ But really you mean extra time on the "retrieving bar" when the app goes into showing purple? speechles 1917
Were you doing anything else on the network when the slowdown occured? Like sync running in the background on any device eating all the bandwidth? That is Roku itself buffering content. Once it gets 15% it can tell it has the header and know the filetype is supported or not. It will kill the player. The app knows when the user has requested the player be killed versus an error/playback recovery doing it. So it can immediately resume with remux/transcoding when/if that occurs. But you would notice this at 15% when it does this flicker stop/restart of the video player. Once its beyond that it is really up to your network conditions, the cpu usage of the server device, and how quickly your drives can read data that emby requests. But it is possible something/someone was hogging all the bandwidth at the same time you were trying to watch something it could have a similar effect. If you can give logs from the server when this happens we can see how long each request takes and see if there is anything amiss. That is where the problem would expose itself first. The Roku logs would show it too but they would simply mirror what the server logs would reveal.
mikeraburn 60
I will grab logs. I understand what you are saying. I did reboot my DS216play but NOT my router OR my Roku Ultra. I cannot imagine what would be syncing and I have no other devices on the network or wifi "usually". There is one other thing I can try to see what happens, just for kicks. mikeraburn 60
Forgot to grab stuff last night. Will do this weekend. BUT if I am the only one bringing this up, and it seems that I am, it's got to be isolated to MY setup. I will grab logs and post when I get them. Solution mikeraburn 60 Posted February 23, 2019 Author Solution Share Posted February 23, 2019 Upon further review and reboots / restarts of routers / Roku Ultra / DS216play it has been determined that I was, as usual, self inflicting myself. After reboots I tossed several types of encodes in various formats and all is well. When no one else chimed in stating they were "seeing" the same thing it should have been obvious to me.
