charredchar 4
I watch a lot of content with subtitles on and I have been noticing some inconsistency with the sizing. The worst offenders are when the subtitles end up so large that they take up half of the screen. Is there a way to override this in the web client? I could not find a setting anywhere within the browser or the web client. I attempted to play the same content through Kodi using the Emby addon but it is just not as easily to use on a mobile device as well as, while I could force sub styles, some subs giving me a timing error that does not go away. Luke 37064
Hi, do you know if the content was transcoding or not?
charredchar 4
Now that I think about it, it might only be transcoded content that has large subtitles. I will test a few different videos and report back.
charredchar 4
I does not appear to be solely transcoded content but it does seem to mostly be videos with stylized subtitles, ie Anime. I am guessing it has more to do with the person who subbed these (fans, mostly) choosing a font and size that might appear fine when directly played through MPC or Kodi but not if I use the Web Client (tested). As stated before, I tried to use Emby through Kodi but, at least this one video in particular, I would get a "retime at line" error on the screen that does not go away even as the rest of the subtitles work fine in that video. The reason I need to use Emby to begin with for videos such as these is because the (really stupid) anime community enjoy using 10bit encoding but not every device I own can play it back which means direct play through Kodi or MPC are not an option. And to be truthful I really love the Web Client for devices like my cell phone or tablet and would like to continue using them over using something like Kodi that are not really suited for those devices. I do not know if this would mean an option on the server would need to be added such as "force subtitle font/size" to fix this like Kodi has, though this could very well break a lot of the sub styling anime has. Luke 37064
Ok, i'll need a sample video then for testing. The web client is using an advanced technique with ass/ssa subtitles in order to avoid transcoding them in server-side, it's actually rendering the styles client-side. It doesn't have support for all of the styles but that is the trade-off to avoid taxing your server CPU by burning them in on the fly. You can read the announcement from it a few months ago: http://emby.media/community/index.php?/blog/1/entry-300-emby-server-305930-released/
Randomacts 5
I would like to confirm that some of my anime has basically broken subs in the web client. (I thought it was all until I checked more actually) I'll see if I can find something that is not a large file but you can see that it doesn't work. Edit: I have some stuff.. how do you want me to send it to you? Put it in the post? PM? Edited July 24, 2016 by Randomacts
jds828 24
I just tried the web app today and it had huge subs. I'm running the latest stable release on this server. Same file on Emby Win 10 app look ok. I do convert and mux subs to .srt but if I can I'll also mux vob etc (mainly .srt) I also leave an external .srt in most cases as I've found some other programs work better with them. I've not had chance to test other devices yet so I'll let you know on Shield, iPad and Android phone.
Luke 37064
We are increasing the size slightly from default. in a future release we will introduce subtitle sizing settings.
jds828 24
Thanks for getting back about it. The option to alter size will be a very welcome addition. I did try the iPad but couldn't get subs to work at all. I do beta test this version so I'll have a better look and read on that section to see if I've missed anything. supermau 37
OMG!!! Subtitle sizing options would make my mom, uncle, and grandma very, very, very happy!!! Subtitle size is their number one complaint on emby... That would be great not only on the web client but android, fire tv, chromecast, etc...
