Hi everyone.

So right now im on a hosted plex server (which works just fine) but since im getting to +10TB worth of content soon enough i might be looking to host something at home since its cheaper in the long run. my "stats" and needs:

Internet: 50/50 mbit

Needs to be able to transcode to 6-7 1080p concurrent streams (1 from inside the network and the rest from outside of the network) Theres a small chance it will ever be so many transcodes at once (perhaps 2-3 at the same time) but its nice to know it can.

I already have a Synology DS416J which i would very much like to use as the storage so what i really need is a "transcode pc"?

The 1080p movies arent bigger than 6-7GB (and i have subtitles on all my movies).

What would i need here? Plex has a "requirement" of 2000-2500 passmark pr transcode. is it the same deal with emby?

Can my internet even handle it?

Can my internet even handle it?

Nope, not without some visible quality reductions.  50 mbit max upstream isn't doing 8 hd videos at once at typical AV bitrates.

What can my internet handle then? pretty sure the avg bitrate of my movies is like 5000 kbps i think

It's hard to say but that 50 number is a MAX and includes all overhead etc.  The actual throughput you get on a sustained basis over the period of a movie could end up being much less.  Only testing it out will tell for sure.

If you force your users to a max transco of 1080p - 4 Mbps in their option, i think you could handle 8 connexions at the same time because you'll reach 32 Mbps in theory, so you've got a good buffer.

Can i force them from my "master" account? Theyre gonna have their seperate accounts.

Unfortunately this option was recently removed and you've got to go on each account to change it. After that to be safe you have to avoid the right for each user to personnalize their account, excepting if you trust them...

Their is a global limit option in admin settings to indicate what is your maximum upload, but I can't say if it dynamically reduce bandwidth... Don't think so...

Hum last time i held 3 connexions with an amd fx 8350. No transco problem but my CPU stayed at 100% a very long time... So i guess i was close to its limits.

That seems sick since it got a 8k passmark

That seems to jibe with the general rule of thumb of 2500 pm/transcode...
